There are two topics on here at present concerning the impact of war on Barnoldswick, specifically World War One. Like many of us I appreciate that anything related to War is unpleasant and possibly best avoided. The fact remains however that Wars have taken place and indeed still do, and for many of us, although any thing to do with the subject can be painful, there have been terrible losses due to conflict right here. During research on this subject there are a number of things that require some measure of further work if those who paid the final price for our today are not to be forgotten. It was muted a few weeks ago by a member that an updated version of an historic publication might be a good idea. The original book was produced during the First World War to commemorate the Men and Women of Craven who gave their lives to us and this country, and a copy was given to all of those who served and survived, and the the families of those who did not. The information contained in the original book was gathered at a difficult time and is in some cases inaccurate. Thanks to the tireless work of a group headed by Mr Chris Foster of CPGW, much of the information has been, and still is, being updated. It has been my privilege to be able to use this work to build a picture of the impact that the War had on Barnoldswick and its inhabitants, this effort being still ongoing. The original objective was to have a publication ready for the centenary of WW1, this we still hope to achieve. During research, something else became clear and I believe it has to be addressed. The Towns War Memorial has 285 Names relating to the Great War, and yet more Names are coming to light that some of us believe should be appended to the Memorial. What we need is a small number of those who care, to commit themselves in whatever way they can, to this end. A small Commitee of people who have the knowledge or skills that may ease the passage of what is hoped for. So if you wish to help, please put yourselves forward. There will in the future be information posted on here concerning other local areas, so wherever you live, if you think you can help, it will be highly appreciated.

Thank You.

Thomo.

Yes, this is gathering momentum, fortunately one more days searching and sifting and the worst is over. Then its refinement time. Heather informs me that we have about two years! time mayhap to get me finger out. Thanks Chris.
I have saved that link Chris and had a quick look, there could be something there for us. Colin (Nolic) has offered his services which includes letter writing. this could soon be very useful.

Thank you all again, I am moved.

Regards:    Thomo.

I think it may be a good idea to get our little group together at some point to discuss who is going to take on various tasks and discuss the various hoops we will have to jump to reach our goal. We need to be quite clear in what we are trying to achieve and this will probably be best done with a face to face session.

There is a mine of information and lots of help sheets available to us via the War Memorials Trust site. I have made a start on downloading and reading through various that I can see will be relevant to us.

If everyone is basically in favour of a meet.

I think it would be best organised after we have established who has the "ownership" and responsibility for the memorial. I have asked for clarification of this from the council and also asked for information on any potential funding that may be availabe. Once we have this information we should have plenty to discuss.

Good / bad idea? discuss --- please post all relevant comments in this thread.

Quite right Ian, when you think it is time we will get together. Travis, the fact that you are interested and have already given access to your findings will do.

As anyone seen this article from Craven Herald ? dated 2009
Is David Whipp still a Councillor  ? It might be worth having him on board.

Hi Chris, so that's why H E Whipp is not on the Memorial. David is still a councillor and I have his e/mail address in my contacts, thanks for the heads up on that one.
Right, I have just spoken to David and he is going to call here tomorrow, hopefully bringing Ken Hartley AKA Klondyke49 with him. Davids Family have expressed the wish that H E Whipp is not added to the Memorial in respect of an earlier decision. With this in mind it will probably be as well to publish the names of possible additions in the press. We do not want to upset anyone.

Thanks Peter,  Its good that David is still a councillor. Judging by the article he'd be a good man to have on our side.

Ultimately though I suspect any decision the council will make will be very much based on finance. Though we are of way off  that yet it needs to be factored into the game plan.

I think Ian's idea of you meeting up is a good one. You can establish who's doing what, when and how and become more of a cohesive unit.

Chris

Having just walked past the Salterforth memorial, I wondered whether you've already mentioned and included it in the project, or whether it's considered to be a separate entity?Go to Top of Page

All of the available info for Salterforth and Kelbrook, Earby and Thornton, Foulridge and Rural, Gisburn and Martons, is already on the computer, and just requires editing. It will be on the back burner for a while, but will be sorted and made available for inclusion in the publication, it will also be posted on here.

David sits on West Craven Area Committee who it looks like are responsible for the memorial according to the CH newspaper report.

I have not had official word back from the council yet as I have not been able to check my email as I'm at work at the moment. Pendle council offices will be closed tomorrow due to idustrial action. I'm sure David will be able to confirm who has responsibility for the memorial anyway. He will almost certainly be a useful contact for the project, particularly as something on the same lines has already been mooted. It would be useful to find out exactly what the proposal comprised of in 2009 and what has actually happened as a result of the appeal.

One thing is for sure, it will not be a five minute job, there are a lot of things to consider and sort, nothing insurmountable I would think, but we need a good cohesive plan to put forward.

And on that score I will try and make the evidence for, as clear and factual as is possible. That has been a hectic seven days, trying to manage all the new info coming in whilst at the same completely re-decorating the lounge pending the arrival of two new settees, due next week, a call a few minutes ago to tell me that they will be delivered this Thursday, Phew, I have just finished the lounge. And it stinks! two large radiators in heat resistant paint, the heating will have to go back on shortly, so it could get worse. The Memsahib will be pleased though. The next job is to look at what other sites are available to back up what we know, and if needs be purchase some time with them. And then completely restructure the kitchen, new wall and floor tiles and removal of all the other obscene efforts of some past cowboys.

Sounds like fun Peter!

I'm home from work now and found an email waiting from Glenys Barnes who is Estates and Asset Management Leader at Liberata. She suggested that I rang her for a chat which I have done.

When we have formulated our proposal, our avenue will be via West Craven Area Committee. We can ask for the proposal to be put on the agenda and then attend when the item comes up for discussion to back up our request and speak in support if required. If we already have the support of our representatives on the committee all the better.

The cleanup and re-lettering on the Barlick memorial came about as the result of the 2009 proposal that the CH article referred to. That was done out of the maintenance budget which does not cover additions to the memorial, there is no funding available for additions or extra works that she is aware of.

She was not involved with the Earby Cenotaph project but was with the addition of a single name to the Colne memorial. That was proposed via Colne Royal British Legion and she seems to remember that the small plaque that was added cost in the region of £200. I know from the War Memorials Trust that this cannot have come from Legion coffers as they are not allowed to use their funds for that purpose so I assume that the cost may have been defrayed by sponsor(s).

Lancashire Telegraph Article

We can also seek the support of the Town Council which could also be a source of funding, we will need to make a case there as well.

So, plenty to think about.

Yes it was fun, and it got funnier, when I restarted the CH one of the radiators in the hall blew its bleed valve!!!!!!!!!! Today I sat and awaited the visit, it did not happen, no sorry or anything, if thats down to the strike, I will go ballistic. Trying to access some sites has been hard work but I am getting there, and although frustrated, I have gained more info.
