As there seems to be quite a bit of artistic talent around here, I thought I would start a pencil sketch section .....

Conor, you might want to invest a few €'s in some pure lanolin.

My grand daughter Jess called in last night and the first thing she noticed was the 4 year old Stanley drtawing, most impressed but didn't like the frame!

As for hand protection, gloves are the best answer, if you don't use them you'll get into trouble with the blocks because they wear off the skin faster than your body can react by increasing the thickness and hence automatic protection. Peeing on your hands is an old brickie's trick and works so they tell me but personally I never bothered. My hands coped most of the time apart from the cracks on the finger joints, I never found a permanent cure for them, I just had to put up with it.  Lanolin is the natural grease in sheep wool and is extracted at the sewage works from the waste water from wool-scouring, tell your mum that every time she uses any she should remember where it originated! (That includes lipstick!) The only segs I have on my hands these days are caused by the heat from me pipe!

Did you see that Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall cookery programme where he went into an old cider house full of old blokes drinking scrumpy. They all thought "This long-haired yobbo won't be able to take our cider so let's have a laugh" and they got him competing with them. And he won!

Can't think how. I seem to remember I was all right with the stuff as long as I was in the warm but as soon as I stepped outside things deteriorated rapidly. Seemed to be a very slow burn.

Conor, next outside job should be with the steeplejacks, have a word with the lads on SC. That would be another giant leap forward in your education! Good lads but rough as a bear's bum!

we have a steeplejack company in our village 'dawsons' so i know some that work there and mums good friends with them, but i dont fancy trying it. im ok with heights ive helped dad enough working at heights. a few months ago i was helping him fit some windows in the roof of a 4 storey building, some dormas. didnt get too close to the edge though!! LOL i can say this i doubt they drink cider before a job, those chimneys are massive that they work on, they need their heads up there hehe

Conty, lanolin is the fatty substance from sheeps wool used in ointments, fantastic for dry and cracked skin - some chemists sell it in its pure form.   I used to know a very weathered farmer/horseman guy who swore by it, for his hands.   Great stuff.

Moh - € is the closest thing i have on my keyboard to a pound sign (with my eyes, at a glance it looks like a pound sign... oh dear   :)   )

Cath, a lot of the fatty substances in lanolin are very similar to those in human skin which is why it's so good for our skin. If it hadn't been around for so long one of the cosmetics companies would now be selling it at £100 a small jar! Throw out the expensive stuff and get some lanolin.

Stanley, if the steeplejacks used lanolin they would have hands as soft as... well a sheep's bum at least!
