Over the years I've not done so bad when it comes to working with computers, and most times I can eventually fix things up when it all goes pear-shaped.

Yesterday my Mac went not just pear-shaped but a complete fruit pudding with meringue and custard. Over the past few weeks it had been getting slower and slower until it said: "You know what? I can't be bothered anymore. I quit." And it did.

Fortunately there's a thing called Time Machine which regularly backs up the OS and all files to an external drive, so I wasn't too nonplussed.

Unfortunately my Mac refused even to start up. Missing its core thingies or something.

No probs - just re-install the OS from the original discs. Almost there - the discs were a bit out of date but I could easily update the version from the internet.

Went to restore all my settings, files, programmes, etc from Time Machine. Unfortunately my finely tuned and slimmed down original system had bloated by about 20GB when reinstalled - and my drive didn't have enough space on it to complete the job.

Grrr.

My backup drive (1TB  capacity) is also getting full so it looks like I'm going to have to buy another to dump my data into, then give it all a good clean out.

On top of that, once you start messing with reinstallations, I find much of my work software needs reactivating from the software companies - it's going to take me absolutely ages to get back to where I was a few, happy and organised days ago.

I hate computers.

How cheap are their calls to Australia? That's where I call most and is the reason I still have my calls with Talk Talk. I like their bills as well, every call itemised with all the details.

Do you not use Skype for Oz? Or use Live Messenger from a Windows machine, you can video conference...

The Orange package I have has free calls to 30 countries on a VOIP second line.  They've since abandoned the VOIP second line and free anytime calls to 30 countries is £4 a month on top of the package.  OZ is one of the 30.

Without an Orange mobile, its £24 for Evening and weekend calls with line rental and broadband, £26.50 with anytime national calls.  Its a fiver less is you have an orange mobile (might be worth getting an old mobile and a PAYG sim card just so you pay less for the package - I don't think you actually have to use it).   You get free calls to 0845 & 0870 numbers now which I don't.  The anytime international calls are on top of these prices.   I've been with them for going on 3 years, no real issues.  Their customer service isn't wonderful but they are all weak on that front in my experience.

Intersting Plugs, I have an Orange PAYG phone thanks to Doc giving me Amie's old one. Perhaps I should do some sums and initiate a contact with them.

I've had a reply from Orange offering me broadband at £3 more than I pay now! They say it would be less if I had an Orange phone so I've written back saying I am confused and as I have an Orange PAYG phone and a cheaper service already, how much can I have my present service for? Hee Hee!

I'm still mulling over whether to save £2 a month. Call me old fashioned but I think I'll leave it how it is. In my experience changing plans can lead to unforeseen consequences. By the way, Orange/BT BB service went down this morning from 05:55 to 06:30. Can't remember when I had a drop out under pure Orange service.....

The service has been appalling since the LLU kit was removed. I've run a few speed tests at different times of the day and have seen between 7MB and 800KB. Orange have sent a new router, just in case, but can find nothing else wrong. If it doesn't get any worse I can probably suffer it until October when the exchange is being upgraded to 21cn

I used to get a steady 7Mb/s, it varies a lot now between 2-7 Mb/s.  I'm staying put, I'm still on the deal they cut back when the recession started, its £6.00 a month less than their present deal and a lot cheaper than I can get anywhere else.  I don't notice the poorer speed most of the time.

Immediately after using OGFB this morning I got an alert from windows security that  I had five trojans.I was invited to download an anti malware program.  I don't do business with people who call uninvited, so I ran my own virus software - Avast.  This program, after a full scan lasting a couple of hours, said there was nothing wrong. I'm puzzled.

"Windows Security" doesn't tell you you have trojans.  Almost certainly an inadvertant download/driveby trying to convince you you need to download their software (and then you will be in trouble). There far more fake anti-malware than real stuff these days.  (One reason I dumped Windows, I got sick of it all)

Stanley, if its a toolbar in Firefox in Ubuntu, go to Tools,Addons,Plugins find the offending article in the list, right click it and select 'Disable'.    Unless you've gone back to Windows, the Windows uninstall isn't going to do much good.

Getting rid of InBox is notoriously difficult. If Pluggy's remedy doesn't work (though I'm sure it will as he knows what he's talking about) here are a few other pointers:

========================================

http://askubuntu.com/questions/39899/how-do-i-remove-inbox-as-my-search-engine

It sounds like your default search engine got changed to the Inbox.com search engine, which is known for being really hard to remove. It's possible that you've already uninstalled the actual extension, but some of the preferences that it changed are still set.

To fix things:

  1. Type about:config into the Location Bar, and press Enter.

  2. If you haven't done this before, Firefox will warn you about voiding your warranty. Click "I'll be careful, I promise!"

  3. In the box labeled "Filter" do a search for "browser.search".

  4. Anything that was changed by the Inbox.com extension should be in bold. Right click on anything that looks related to Inbox.com and choose "Reset". You'll probably want to make sure thatbrowser.search.defaultenginename and browser.search.order.1 are both set to Google or Yahoo.

========================================

Alternatively:

Click Edit > Preferences, click General (in the horizontal bar near the top of the Firefox Preferences window), and put whatever URL you want (in this case http://www.yahoo.com) in the text box labeled "Home Page".

========================================

Alternatively:Open System->Administration->Synaptic packet management.
In search window, enter "inbox", localize packet and uninstall it.

Plugs and Heather, you were both right and after I got over my initial panic I went furtling and found the right buttons to press. I think I've got rid of it. In addition I stumbled across an option to remove cookies etc and zapped the lot. As soon as I'd read the above I remembered something else and clicked on search engines , found Inbox was still on that list, went to manage serach engines and removed Inbox.com.

If any of you go searching for a map and get taken to a site called In box.com, don't click on search for a map, that's where I went wrong. At one point it had taken over my home page and wouldn't let me open anything else except via their search engine.  Nasty and intrusive.

I've just done a check by logging out and restarting Ubuntu, back into firefox via my homepage which is oneguy and checked the search engine list. Inbox.com is no longer there!  I think I've zapped the little bugger but thanks for the help anyway, it might be of use to someone else. That's enough computer glitches for one day.

By the way Kev, I've come to the same conclusion about the new Orange portal via BT. I shall put up with the bad service and wait and see what happens in October (or whenever!). One thing is sure and certain, it's not as fast or as stable as the dedicated Orange link was.
