I got mail this morning.....

Hi

I have just been looking at your website regarding the Sagar family from Yorkshire and Barnoldswick. My gt grandfather was Hugh Sagar who to and fro'ed between Burnley and Barnoldswick. I know that 2 of his sons also moved between the 2 towns, i.e. John and Alice Hannah Sagar, and William and his wife. I would be interested ti know if you have any information regarding the Sagar family in Barnoldswick and if any of the Sagar clan still remain there.

Any help would be great

Edna Wilkins (nee Sagar)

Edna,
Best way is through the site as I'm not a genealogist. I'll put your query up there, register and join in, you will than be tapped into the experts.

Best, S.

Hi

On John & Alices' marriage certificate it just states father deceased, no name.   All the people I have been in contact with have assumed that Elizabeth Heap was married to Joshua Heap born 1835, Stockport.  He was a confectioner at Brown Street, Burnley.  The query is, if Elizabeth Ramsbottom married Joshua Heap, (no record of a marriage) why does the census 1871 and 1881 show them as Joshua Heap, Elizabeth Heap and Alice Ann Heap, when I know that Alice Hannah was married as Ramsbottom, and I have a memoriam card for Elizabeth's death showing her as Elizabeth Ramsbottom.  I am sure that Joshua was married to a Sarah Jagger (she had 2 sons) at one time as I found them on 1861 census as living on Rosehill, Burnley. I also have a memoriam card for Joshua Heap.  My thoughts at this time is that Elizabeth Ramsbottom had Alice Hannah (possibly out of wedlock) and moved in with Joshua and used his name for census purposes but her own name for Alice's marriage and her death.  I seem to go round and round in circles with this one.      Thanks for your reply

Stop using your age as an excuse, I'm 71 and know nothing about computers but you don't hear me complaining.  Get a grip and start posting yourself, you'll give us a bad name!  Handlamp is over 80, nobody knows his right age......  think Grey Power!

I got mail.....  I've suggested he registers and joins in.

hello and greetings from one old fart to another,
I googled my family name Sagers and lo and behold there you are.
My lot are from Haughhead in Simonstone , he was a cutler and I have been able to trace them back to the 1500,s.All the original research was done by a John Sagar in Surrey.for whom I am very grateful for his assistance. He tells me that the farm at Haughhead had been in continual ownership for 350yrs.In fact it made the national press!he wa my 16 times grandfather {thats something to be proud of.} My Sagers lived in West Derby and my grandfather had a Dairy in Holland Rd.

I came up to Padiham last year but was unable to find Haughhead. I have since been in touch withJeff Lonsdale who promises to be on hand for the second coming.
Hope you don,t mind me droping in but I was so excited to find the Sagars.

All the best Regards Bernard

Hi             I have received a couple of photos from Jeff of the farm as it is now.  Which line of Sagars do you come down.  Do you have any information on John and Alice Hannah Sagar.  John was born 1849 in Burnley and Alice Hannah Ramsbottom was born 1868.  I have also received the line back to the 1500s which I am still trying to get my head around, it is amazing!.  I have also a contact in Australia, Mia, who is from the same line as myself, her ancestors having lived in Barnoldswick for quite a while.  On looking at the Sagar line from 1800 through to 1900, they seem to move to and fro from Burnley and Barnoldswick..  Any ideas as to why?  Edna

Edna, towards the end of the 19th century there was a lot of short term migration between say Burnley, Nelson and Colne and Barlick and Earby.  Houses were cheap and easy to rent and families tended to move to chase the work using the railway as transport.  1890 to 1914 Barlick was a hot bed of building and development, plenty of work and many families moved in here at that time.

Hi Bernard, welcome to the funny farm.

I used to live in Altham near Simonstone but have never heard of Haughhead, did John Sagar say where abouts it was?
