I've just been down to the doctors in Earby to have my annual flu jab, they are doing mass vaccinations today and next saturday for the over 60's and the medically impaired such as I.

This Flu Jab does not vaccinate you against the swine flu virus just the bog standard flu virus.

If your over 60's then get registered at your doctors and get your jab.

Went last Saturday, don't qualify on age but do as my wife Sally has a compromised immune system and is in the "at risk" category. We both had proper flu in new year 2000 and don't want it again, I lost 2.5 stone in 3 weeks, took months to get back on proper form.

Panny, proper flu is a bugger as anyone who has had it can testify. I had my annual jab at the diabetic clinic. I would say that this year it is slightly more aggressive than usual. I had a slight reaction to it which doesn't usually happen. Certainly worth having.

My daughters boss was kind enough to organise flu jabs for all his staff a few weeks ago, to be administered in the office, saving them having to make doctors appointments and taking time off work etc.  Last week my daughter and 2 others came down with the flu, on her third day my daughter attended a doctors appointment , and was told that if it was the swine flu they couldn't give her a jab because it was too late to do any good ...  ??   She's feeling much better now thankfully.

My local surgery reads the NHS rules strictly and doesn't consider you eligible until 65 unless you have an illness that makes you eligible. It's like trying to get blood out of a stone if you ask for it at 60.

I can't see why your surgery is so pedantic. Sally had no problem at all booking me for the 30 second slot after her. I heard something on the news a couple of months ago about what the practices get paid for each vaccination administered, I remember thinking "nice work if you can get it". I dont know whether the cost of the vaccine is deducted from what they are paid though. I noted that there was a difference between the renumeration for the standard flu jab and the H1N1 when it arrives. Around £7.00 comes to mind for the bog standard flu jab. Either way it's a lot of money being moved about when you think that they are doing about 100 an hour. It was certainly busy when we went. Mass vaccination makes sense anyway in my book if the vaccine is available. Prevention is far better than cure.

It is better to start the annual jab when you are younger because it has a cumulative effect - you are better protected the more times you have been vaccinated. Perhaps I'll have a go at our surgery and see if they've changed their tune. Perhaps they were getting less money last time I tried!

They were offering seasonal flu jabs at the pharmacy at our local Tesco here for £8 a go.

Peter, cite chronic Bubblegut Syndrome as a reason. They change the flu jab slightly each year and so it must be a bit like ingesting infections as a child, it tends to make the immune system more versatile. One of the reasons why old farts like me have such good resistance as long as we have good general health. Our bodies are such wonderfully efficient machines.

PS. I listened to a very good programme yesterday on US helth care costs. The costs are astronomical, much more expensive than financing the NHS. Of course we knew that but listening to the figures and rec ognising the number of people not covered was a wonderful affirmation of our system.
