Questions about this subject keep cropping up amid closely related topics, so I thought it may be a good idea to expand on the subject. I will not go on about my qualifications to discuss Canal Boats so lets just give it a go and see what transpires.

Wasn't that from Under Milk Wood, by Dylan Thomas? Rings a bell. There was a boat on Water World (Sky) t'other night going by that name. I like it!No hang on, maybe the Under Milk Wood one was Llareggub? Confirmation, anyone? |

Yup, Llaregub as I remember it..... Funniest name I ever saw was in Drummore on the Galloway peninsula. There were three houses in the shadow of an incline that had been put in at some time to improve what had evidently been a steep hill into the village. The one nearest the bottom was Beach View, the next one back was Sea View and the last one, right under the embankment was Nae View.

That was the name of Dr Coopers boat in the early 80's, he used to take it to Abersoch in Wales and to some people it just looked like a Welsh name.

Ta Moh - rang 'em but no answer. However, I think from the price (£47k) and the fact that it was new in May 07, this will be a narrowbeam (6' 10") whereas we need a widebeam (min. 10'). As I said in my PM reply - it's great that all my mates on OGFB are looking out for me. Thank you! |

Right, iv'e seen the picies, blown them up etc, & next, I am going to have a look. Comments, that boat appears to be nice and straight, no frills and I have seen much worse. The engine room which is under the back deck seems to be clean and free of the crap that one would normally find in a poor or "unloved" boat, in short, from the photos I think it may well be a viable proposition and in fact my only unfavourable comment at this time is the line on the sides of the cabin which is definetely PWP, (painted whilst pissed). Why this boat needs to be craned out for an inspection is frankly beyond me at this time. 1, if you want to check the thickness of the bottom plate, take off the weed hatch lid and measure the thickness of the swim plate which is almost always made from the offcut of the base plate. 2, the thickness of the hull side plates can usually be measured by looking at the front or well deck drains, which are cut into this.Any thing else can be achieved by waiting for a suitable day, donning your cossie, getting into the water and having a look. I will be getting back to you on this shortly, when I have seen it for myself. And to you Callunna, it was an absolute pleasure talking to you.

Oh, Call, seems like you have experts on the job for you now, so I'm sure you will get summat that will suit.
Names of houses are often odd, but we have noticed that the oddest names are Chinese restaurants. There's one in Carlisle called "Harbour view." which is beyond me as the nearest harbour is certainly not within viewing distance...

The lad said himself that the painting was a bit unsightly but he's not had chance to finish the job owing to the weather. He'll apply masking tape to the coachline so that it will be dead straight when he paints the main coat over the whole lot. quote: Any thing else can be achieved by waiting for a suitable day, donning your cossie, getting into the water and having a look.
Oh my word! If I don a cossie I'll spark off a 'beached whale on canal' alert like the poor beast last year on the Thames! Not to mention going down with Weil's Disease. Thank you Thomo - it's all much appreciated. On the sub-plot of this topic (names) I think the most outrageous claim is that of a street in Barlick called Far East View. By 'eck, you'd have to have a very good telescope to see China from there |

Another funny thing about Far East View is that it is nearer to the East than East View which I live on. I suppose it's further from the town centre (by about 20 yards)!!!!

Latest update:House now on the market. One viewing so far. The place has never been kept so clean & tidy - it's agony! Golden Rivet: Have recently discovered this fascinating phenomenon which seems to have two connotations. The first is that every boat has a hidden golden rivet which must be discovered by the owner. The second is a little less savoury. Any of you nautical folk out there like to comment? Have been looking into T-Mobile's Web 'n' Walk (yukky name) which promises to do the trick as regards mobile Internet access. Oh dear, I'm going to have to buy myself a top o' the range MacBookPro laptop - what a shame (Cally rubs hands together with glee). |
