The British couple held by Somali gangster seamen were released .......

What struck me about that was....... it has been A YEAR since they were taken ...I bet it felt more  like TEN for them  . It only seems like  a month or two for me !

Understandably  they are being very tight lipped about the whole thing , and hopefully journalists will respect their wish......Don't hold your breath ,though..eh

I wonder what Monday's  Red Top headlines will be ......Unless something more JUICY happens before tomorrow, of course... !

I believe long standing members often do have slow connections.

Not all that thoughtful Peter. I've been thinking we needed tidying up for a while and Moh gave me a list so what choice did I have? She Who Must Be Obeyed! I've never had any problem with big topics but that's only because I am lucky with my connection. Doc, up at Prospect, is lucky if he gets 1mb/s and Heather has had her share of problems in the past. We tend to forget.

I'm watching Burma, I can't help wondering what the generals are up to. Cat and mouse? She is an incredibly brave lady and I wish her well. Ireland is a worry as well.  Remember the 'Celtic Tiger'? My god, those money men have some crimes on their sheet but who's doing anything about it? PE this week has a lot to say about the Financially Supine Agency. Much connected with Madov and the London connection. Well worth reading, it's a different planet working on different rules and they hold us all in contempt.

I bet Max Clifford was on the plane which took the money out. It wouldn't surprise me if that's how they are paying the ransom, Sold the Story to a Newspaper !!!!

I doubt it ....and truelly hope not ,Frank

"cat and mouse" in Burma sounds about right  , for now. Did anyone else get annoyed at John Simpsons questions to her ?   Almost daring her to say something that would get her arrested again .....

Yes Bradders and I'd forgotten. I thought she sounded as though she was getting fed up with his obviously dangerous questions. She has enough to worry about without providing provocative sound bites for the media.

So, if we weren't involved with torture how come the government is paying millions of pounds to their accusers to stop documentary evidence coming out in court? Bit of a nasy smell around that one.

I listened to the Irish Finance Minister on the news last night doing his best to deflect bad news about the Irish economy. Worrying, Other countries in the EU are heading the same way and if I heard aright the UK has committed £6billion to any bail-out fund. I thought we weren't in the Monetary Union? I must have missed something.

Afraid it was correct Bradders he has been appointed for publicity for a Book/Film etc and I believe newspaer serialisation etc. He was talking in terms of around £5,000,000 !!!!!!

Some shocking statistics in this BBC report this morning. All carers need support, these brave kids should be at the top of the list!

New thread up before I could reply to questions posed on the earlier thread.

Tizer - I must draft better, sorry!  What I meant was that 'pay and reward' are too low and 'societal costs' too high.  On housing benefit true, the money generally flows straight into the hands of the landlord, never seeing the 'benefit recipient'.

Frank - yes, the headline figures on spending are rising.  You do understand the time value of money though, don't you?  But anyway well done.  You've done just what the government hopes you'll do: look at the totals, see it's rising, and so conclude nothing's being cut.  A person couldn't be more wrong.  It's rather like taking a grand out of your bank account and sticking it under your bed.  Five years later, you take it out and think great I've got a grand.  Yes, you have.  But that grand won't do what it did 5 years ago.

Yes Richard I do understand the time value of money.
Like this you mean.My grandfather inherited £46 12s 9p on his 21st Birthday  (b 1865 )if you look here http://www.measuringworth.com/ukcompare/result.php you can see what it was worth in today's money.

Richard I would just ask one question, what would you do if you had over spent and the debt collector was knocking at the door demanding payment. Would you promise to pay ? and start to reduce your over spend ? I know I would.

What attracted my attention today,is that when i went to send a PM to a member to say that they hadn't upset me over a topic, they no longer existed on the site. Sad.

I think you need to rethink you idea of inflation and its cause.

Just ponder on the mechanism that causes this:-

You could (up to very recently)  go out and buy say a new car for £25,000 and it five years you will be lucky to get £5000 for it. You could go out and buy a house for £200,000 and in five years time it would have been worth £250,000. Both become dated as  newer developments come along and  both depreciate physically and need constant maintenance,

You will say this has nothing to do with inflation, but  the bottom line is why has the expression "Safe as houses" come about? It is nothing to do with structural rigidity.

Every silver lining has a cloud.
