I've been thinking of starting this topic for a while. Let's see how it goes....
Asked if he was in charge of the nation, in the absence of the Prime Minister - Mr Clegg told Metro: ‘Yeah, I suppose I am. I forgot about that.’

"It was a pleasure to watch Mr Maudslay use a hand tool of any description but he was particularly fine with an 18" flat file"
Said of Henry Maudslay by one of his workers.

"But at my back I always hear Time's winged chariot hurrying near"
"The Grave's a fine and private place but none I think do there embrace"
Andy Marvell. 'To his Coy Mistress.' (The metaphysical poets often put people off because of the name given to the gentre but if you've never seen them, have a look, wonderful accessible stuff. What a pity John Donne's wife burned what she thought were his 'erotic poems' after he died.)

A lady on the Radio 4 `BH' programme this morning, one of three people invited to review the Sunday papers (I think she was an artist).
Talking about Steve Jobs and Apple: "It seems to me that everyone has an iPhone".
...and about wind turbines: "It's the only way we'll save the planet".
How unworldly can you get?

I heard it as well Tiz. I think you are right and she was a sculptor? Mind you, she did include power from water resources. I showed Janet the turbines at Masson Mill on Tuesday, spinning away day and night making an average of over 200kw over the year. Think how many similar installations could be put on a river like the Derwent. Then think of the number of suitable rivers.

But if you put lots of these turbines on the rivers won't you disrupt the flow, and won't the `drop' at each one become too small to be useful?

No disruption because you're only borrowing the water and returning it. Using the fall at one site has no effect on the fall at the next suitable site, this is why you find valleys with a string of water mills in them. As long as nobody diverts water away from the watercourse, say for irrigation or other water supply the flow can be used over and over again. As Newton said about water charges by the canal companies for condenser cooling, "We were only borrowing it!"

Stanley, thanks for the explanation about the rivers, I knew I could rely on an engineer! In fact, interrupting and slowing down the flow of water in our rivers is a recognised way of preventing excessive erosion of river banks, and the creation of big `ponds' (reservoirs) attached to the rivers is now encouraged for this reason.

The interesting thing at Masson Mill is that the water resource deteriorated after the building of Ladybower reservoir. Water diverted upstream for town's water supplies.
Uncle Mort...... I was walking up to Letcliffe in the drizzle yesterday and said to jack, "Bugger the sun. You know where you are with a good steady drizzle!" Peter Tiniswood was one of our great modern philosophers.
