Does anyone remember the Maid Marian shops in the 1960s/70s. What did they sell ? Were there many of these corner shops ? Why were they called "Maid Marian" ? Anyone out there have any fond memories of them.

Was there such a shop on Skipton road at Coates, I seem to remember a little sign on the side of the shop saying "Maid Marian". I had to call in there when I was working on the canal beside the Rolls Royce factory.

Was it not something to do with the " Maypole" brand of shops ??

Frank, you could well be right. As far as I remember they were a kind of grocery shop, the sign outside had a picture of maid Marian on it. Don't think they exist now.
Big Kev, I seem to remember sweets with a similar name. Thanks both of you for the comments. I wonder if Stanley remembers that shop on Skipton Road, Coates.

On the corner of Wellhouse Road and West Avenue, now converted into a house. Owned by Mr & Mrs Jolly.

There are some stores going under the name 'Maid Marian' in the Doncaster area. Don't know whether there's any connection with the one in Barlick in days gone by ?

Think I have an empty box of Maid Marian Matches. I belive they were a buying group similar to Wavy Line and similar shops. I think with mergers at the wholesale level they are effectively ancestors of the 'Happy Shopper' of todays independent retail trade. They were around the South East , my home area , but not in any great quantities

I remember Maid Marian as a brand of tinned foods. I have an idea we sold some when I was open all hours in Sough. That reminds me, there were references in the TV programme.

I was Slightly Wrong , 'Happy Shopper' is a Booker group (Wholesalers) brand. The shop on Coates Avenue does a nice line in Fresh Samosas/ Pressed Kebabs ( cold unfortunately so you have to take them home and microwave for 20 seconds ) , and is also stocking the current limited edition triple choc Mars bars.
Buying Groups include Nisa-Todays ( 2011 Retail Industry award Winners Symbol/Fascia group of the year ) , Costcutter (2011 Retail Industry award Winners Independent Retailer of the year ) and of course Spar.
