Anyone using the roundabout at our end of the M65 or the imediate area cannot fail to have noticed the scale of the development on the Bunkers Hill site adjacent to Vivary Way. This is of course the New Flagship Boundary Mill , I have been following the progress of the work with a great deal of interest as my Wife is an emloyee of one of the concessions within the store. So here by way of a matter of interest is a description of what will be as we understand it. This is based on sighting of the plans and information given out at staff meetings. The main entrance to the new store will be the one on the aforementioned roundabout, with a secondary pedestrian access close to Colne Raiway Station, below Primet Bridge on the right, possibly at the end of Leach Street. The group of buildings by the main entrance are the new restaurant complex, this is built on a curve, a two storey building in the centre with an arm at either side, one of which will be a conventional restaurant and the other a fish restaurant, the centre part probably the kitchens and admin. Further up the site is the main store building built on three floors. This building will house not only the store departments but also the warehouses and offices. The old warehouse on Regents Avenue will become the regional distribution centre. the the front of the main store there are two cabins, one at either side. These are 1, Thorntons Chocolates, and 2 Pendle Tourism. The main store will be accessed through revolving doors in the centre at the front giving entrance to the Ladies, Menswear and Shoe departments, glass and china etc to be on the first floor. The warehouses are on the Vivary Way side and staff car parking on the other. Main car park at the front possibly over a thousand spaces. To the rear of the store a further building houses the service units, sprinkler pumps etc and possibly judging by the size of the exhaust that can be seen at present, a standby generator set. When does it all happen? Hand over app January 21st 2008, and the changeover on the weekend of 15/16 March 2008, We know that not everyone is in favour of this type of new development, but I see it as a bold and exciting effort that is being quite tastefully executed.

The final countdown. Wifey was working at the new store again on Wednesday, and at lunchtime groups of workers were invited to have lunch at "Banny's" fish and chip restaurant. All were very impressed by the quality of the food and the standard of service. One of the features of the building is a very large cylindrical tropical fish tank in the entrance area. The eating areas have a nautical theme with pictures and models of ships etc, the waiters have digital order pads and the place is licensed. On thursday they did a trial run with the restaurant packed to capacity, again it was a success. Of the old buildings, it is not yet clear what happens next, teams will be working to clear them in the coming weeks, however it is possible that Asda may be moving "George" into what was the glass and china section.

Spare a thought for little old me. I work there, and not sure where I will be working on Monday exactly.
When you walk though the impressive revolving doors, you will see the new perfume shop on the left, and the skin care shop on the right.
Then go into the main store, and on the right are 10 menswear tills and to the left are ladies fashion tills.

I only had a quick whizz round last monday, so couldn't see everything, but it does look good, rather like a posh department store
Checkout out the loos, they are far nicer than any I've seen for a long time.

See you all there.
xx

Thats it, the tape has been cut, the doors are open, onwards and upwards and good luck to them. All the staff decked out in their smart new uniforms and a very fair turnout from the "want to be first in" brigade. More later when i've had a look round.

Hello,
Anybody been in the new Boundary Mill, if so, what do you think of it.
Even though I hadn't worked at the Old Mill a long time, I was just getting used to it, when we had to move.
Not sure what I think of the new one yet, very modern and very big comes to mind.

Let me know what you think.

Binnie, you will be fine. Prior to the move, Pavers outlet at Boundary Mill in Walsall was always the top shop, but they are the only shoe retailers in that store, there is no competition. You are joining the department that has kept them in second place since the new store opened at Colne. Other newbies are two from Clarkes Shoes and one from Shoe studio's/Sock Shop. Enjoy your new job, I know that Joan will make you welcome, good luck, Thomo.

Have they solved the problems with traffic backing up on the M65 yet? I think Boundary Mill has been a victim of its own success!Go to Top of Page

These little snippets were gleaned from the greeters on Bank Hol, Monday,
1.    A Lady sat outside the old store, and after an hour went into Asda to enquire as to why it was closed. This having been surouded by the posters proclaiming the move.
2    Another Lady on exiting the new store enqired as to where Asda had gone and on being told that it was where it always had been became irate and pointed out that it was always next door.
3    A  couple having seen the advert for the wedding service tried to book a wedding for July.
4    A member of staff walking to work through Barrowford was aked why she was wearing a Boundary Mill uniform when it had closed.

Funny old world init.

That just reminded me of something. When number 2 daughter got married at Scaitcliffe Hall in Todmorden, we were taken by car from our home in Rochdale. There were two possible routes, Bacup to Todmorden or Littleborough to Todmorden. There was nothing much in it time wise.

We were driven  the latter route. As we passed Riggs, Number 1 daughter said to the driver, to drive past quickly or Mum ( ie me) would leap out and want to buy some plants!

Sue, you've reminded me of the days when I was living in Addingham and then Barlick  and doing Ellenroad.  Quickest way to Addingham on average was Littleborough (Past Riggs at Walsden) then over to Hebden Bridge and over to Haworth and Keighley.  Best way to Barlick was over Old Betts and via Barrowford.  Once you start crossing the Pennines your options take a lot of working out.
