The railway would be cheaper, the track bed is mostly intact. I could never understand the concept of the M65 extension, traffic on the Colne-Skipton road has never been excessive. The big problem is the Colne-Keighley traffic in Colne which is serious and has been for years.

Transocean paying large bonuses for 'the best safety record for years'. Really?

I heard an interesting comparison yesterday between polls done on Vietnam war and current polls on Libya. More and more people are smelling a rat. I'm struck by the similarities between Gadafi and Hussein in Iraq. Both proceeded with the repression but used all the diplomatic ploys to keep throwing up smoke screens and diversions. In Iraq it got to the point where the 'coalition' lost patience and mission creep became incursion. How long before that happens with Gadafi?

I share your pessimism Belle. Some interesting questions are being asked about the round of job losses in the armed forces which are getting under way now. Joined up government? Sack the troops just as we start a new 'initiative' that nobody can foresee an ending to? How long before we start to get rumblings from the Chiefs of Staff?

The NHS reforms are in trouble. I don't know if you heard Baroness Shirley William yesterday but she was sounding very sensible when she voiced the reasons for her criticisms of the actions being taken. Andrew Lansley is even talking in terms of "last ditch attempts" to save the reforms. He seems to have been sidelined by Cameron and the hard-liners but of course everyone is denying that there is any dissent in the government.

There was an interesting piece on US budget cuts and how they will affect health reforms in America. One of the statements was that somehow the US system has managed to make itself twice as expensive, half as effective and totally driven by the lobbying power of the private health corporations. Guess who the comparison was with...  You've guessed it, the NHS! Much the same point that Shirley Williams was making. She also raised the point that once private health care companies are involved, EU directives on level playing fields in health care come into effect and legally, the UK government has to comply. She reckons we are getting very close to the tipping point where this factor comes into play and we lose control of how the NHS is run to Brussells. Just what we need!

The first oil tanker in 18 days lifts 1million barrels from Tobruk today. Ostensibly bound for Quatar and not subject to sanctions. $100million dollars worth. Who gets this money? Where is it actually going? The usual market for this high quality crude is Italy and the Mediterranean countries. Do they send tankers as well? What will Gadafi's reaction be? Is he going to be happy? So many imponderables!

I didn't get the job I applied for - blessing in disguise as I'm not sure how I would have coped with all the travelling and about a week away in hotels every month. Bright side to it the company want me to do some work for them as a consultant so no complaints from me.

In the meantime I've already  fixed two contracts for regular work and I'm waiting to hear today about a third. Busy stuff this retirement!! Nolic

Stanley, it does not surprise me that Baroness Shirley Williams was sounding like the voice of reason, she is one of the few politicians i have great respect for.

Nolic, enjoy this wonderfully active retirement!

What has attracted my attention on the news is the fact that Cameron has pledged 650 million pounds to Pakistan to train teachers and build schools (they will probably train terrorists!) - what about our military cuts, hospitals, roads etc.?

You can not expect an INTERNATIONAL STATESMAN to mess about with trivia.

You will expecting the Chancellor of the Exchequer to be numerate next.

Every silver lining has a cloud.

" Some interesting questions are being asked about the round of job losses in the armed forces which are getting under way now "

Yep like how do we have Stores Personell  for all Three Services when One will do, and probably be more efficient. ? Why do we have W O 1s & 2s blocking promotion for more able/educated ranks below ??  This evolution of the Services is being welcomed by a lot of Service Personnel, some of whom I am in contact with on a daily basis.
One of the problems we have is housing, and like I posted on another thread it is unfortunate that a lot of Service Personnel never moved to the Private Housing sector. Should we empty the Council Houses and allocate them for people who have Served our Country ?? Or should we leave the MQs to the current Service families who are Serving ?? and then anyone else coming along has to fend for themselves ?? Difficult questions all round.

Put ARRSE in Google and read what they think. MOD doesn't think MQs and admin buildings are a problem since they flogged them off cheap off-shore for a quick buck.

Comrade, the bright sunlit uplands beckon! Leave time for retirement?

Belle, she was pretty good, lucid and well informed. How I wish she'd never got mixed up with Roy Jenkins, she could have been a force.

Good World Service report on 'progress' in traing the Afghan police. They haven't cracked that one yet. I still say they should have armed the local tribes and left it to them to police themselves.

Clegg the millionaire goes on about social mobility. 'Patronising and fatuous', 'full-blown delusion' are some of the kindest comments in the papers this morning.

Housing is one of the largest issues surrounding Service Families. The issue is should they become a Priority on a Council waiting list ?? the selling off of  MQs would not have made any difference to the situation at all.
We have a very inefficient Service Structure the one issue of three different stores is really quite major. I don't understand are you advocating that the Military should be an employer to pick up the slack in unemployment ?. Because if you don't modernise that is what you get.
In the above posts I see mention to Iraq and now Libya, and I get the feeling that you don't seem to think we should be there ?? Aircraft Carriers and Armoured Brigades are attack units rather than defence, so I thought you would appreciate the modernisation.
Bradders I do know what I am talking about, I deal with the aftermath on a daily basis.  I served and my 2 sons served !! And you ??
Please add any facts that you have to the subject, it looks like you know a lot about it. ARRSE
Stanley is an outlet for people who are not happy bunnies !!!  I deal with current serving people daily. I don't really understand your gripe with the defence review ???

"In vino veritas" or, "There is truth in wine"; truth is told under the influence of intoxicants. From a book given to me by Captain Harcus RN, later Admiral of the Fleet, one of the few engineering officers to achieve that rank.
