I have had help with my Broughton ancestors both from Nigel Broughton and Stanley’s transcript of William Parkinson Atkinson’s “Old Barlick”, WPA turns out to have been my ancestor Rachel Atkinson’s brother. Their mother was Ann Broughton. I thought the following details might help others looking for ancestors in Barlick. My direct ancestors are in bold, an asterisk denotes those mentioned in the “Old Barlick” text.

Nice to know that the transcription of Old Barlick has borne fruit. I am beginning to wonder about publishing it on Lulu. As a descendant, what do you think of that Jill?

Am intiged by the surname 'Vost'. Where did that come from?

Go for it Stanley! WPA deserves a wider public, (he's the new man in my life) I looked up the probate for his will In London earlier in the week, he left £555 17s. There must be many of his direct descendants still about.

Helen Vost came from Altrincham, don't know anything more about her, but my aunt remembers Sameul Vost Abbott.

That's interesting. It has a Germanic ring to it and there is a German connection with Altrincham because Budenberg and Schaeffer set up a factory making pressure gauges in Altrincham in 1936 but had a factory in Manchester from 1858 onwards.

I don't know whether this picture interests you. It's a pic of the loomers at Bancroft Shed in 1937. The lady on the left on the front row is Miss Jane Atkinson. It's in me new book, did I mention it? bancroft obtainable on lulu.com...

I have WPA down on my list for publishing...

That interesting, I haven't been able to bring the Atkinsons that far forward yet, roll on the 1911 census. The household entries get signed by the householder so i'll be able to see WPA's autograph. If I send off for his will I'll put it on here so you can add it to the book  should  you decide to go ahead.

I've got to buy your Barnoldswick book first!

Nice work, Jill.  And clearly presented.
Interesting to see how common it was in the 19th century to call your children after previous surnames in the family.  Makes it easier to confirm parents and grandparents on family trees.
I'll try to produce similar paragraphs about Stephen Broughton's ancestors

Nigel the same thing struck me and I meant to comment on it.

Jill, have you a pic of WPA? it would be nice to have one on the cover. Buy both books on Lulu and make me happy.... Here are the names for the other people on the picture. I looked through the list of employees in 1945 but she isn't mentioned there. She looks at least 50 years old so I would have expected her to be in 1891 census?

Bancroft Loomers in 1937. Back row, left to right: Dan Brennand, Bill Eccleston, Bob Walker, Fred Walker, Walter F Plumley, Harry Calvert. Front row, Miss Jane Atkinson, Lawrence Keirnon, Mrs. Grev. Davy, Billy Whiteoak, Hilda Lomax, Hettie Clark.

My other half is going to give me the Barnoldswick book for my birthday! Instructons are that I order it now (he refuses to learn to use a computer) and he'll hide it away til March.

Had a look for Jane Atkinson on 1891 & 1901 census but the only one I could find would be far too old. Perhaps Jane was one of her middle names.

No photo of WPA I'm afraid Stanley, all memory of his very existence had been lost, nobody even knew there were Atkinson ancestors before I started the family tree though the name Broughton was known as it had been used as a Christian name.

I found that Jane as well, I think she was 55 in 1891?  I'll have a word about a pic of WPA and see what I can tease out of the woodwork.
