Have just caught part of the TV's coverage of the helicopter crash in the North Sea. Another impressive pilot, putting down gently in the water and getting everyone out safe and sound. They also interviewed a BP manager about it - a man with the lovely name Mr Looney (a mate of Frank's perhaps?). But with his job he should be re-named Mr Not-So-Looney.

Bernard Looney has been a mate since 1982. He is now North Sea manager for BP. Electrical Engineer by trade. Not bad for an Irishman lol

Frank, Yes, that was the name, Bernard, standing in front of a map of the North Sea. The TV man reported from Aberdeen docks and was on the quayside. Behind him I could see the grey funnel and top superstructure of what I guessed to be a Royal Navy ship.

Am listening to the 'debate' over Jade Goodie. I have no axe to grind, when she got into trouble on BB I put it down to her being inexperienced and thoughtless plus a loose mouth. No celebrity as far as I am concerned. However, she has been dealt the worst hand of cards anyone can get and is using her celebrity to extract as much money as possible out of the system to provide for her kids. Well done her and I wish her the best of luck. If she can work a flawed system to do something good for her kids more power to her elbow, she is allowed to make her own rules.

Why does the BBC send News Presenters to Hollywood to talk us through the Oscars ??? It seem like they the (presenters) want to be the Stars of the Show. The Oscars are just awards for a bunch of people pretending to be someone else.

Big worry for her must be who is going to look after her kids. I may be wrong but I think husband to be is a waster who's after her money. From the very little I know her mother doesn't seem much cop either.

That did occur to me Comrade, I hope she is well-advised.
I have realised that I owe you all an apology. I was listening to the news and realised that inadvertently I had agreed with the Sunday Express. I sincerely apologise and will try to avoid doing it in future.
Have Idetected a slightly different ploitical atmosphere? The3 commons committe having spent six months doing a 'preliminary investigatio' intpo Lord Belize has decided to have an official investigation. Another year I suppose but are they finally waking up to the fact that he is a tax-dodger with a very suspect residence status. Call me an old cynic but could being party treasurer to the Tories and a big contributor be a good way of making sure that your tax position will get a degree of protection. Surely not. One last thing about that, Private Eye has been banging on about this for two years. Also, did you notice that when the government departments came clean about the wining and dining civil servants have receiced no mention was made of the fact that PE has been pursuing them for 18 months and it's down to PE that we have the figures, not 'openess and transparency'. The departments fought to the last ditch to keep them secret.
I agree Frank, who cares about the Oscars. Mind you, it does give the films free publicity.

Heard something on the radio this morning about a very clever young woman on University Challenge who seems to know all the answers and is good at other things too. Apparently she is now subject to nasty name-calling on the Internet etc simply because she is clever. Isn't it strange how people do this but want to support and emulate swearing TV celebrities instead.

I saw the lass doing her thing and she is quite brilliant, carried the Corpus Christi team by getting in with the starter answers almost every time. I think she'll have enough sense to let the nasties go over her head.

Watching and listening to the news is a bit like sitting on a river bank. Every now and then a body floats past and you make an assessment of whether it bothers you or not. When things are going well and the flow is normal the threads on the surface are calming and benign but when the flow becomes turbulent as it is at the moment some strange slicks dragged up from the bed come to the surface. Taking note of these eddies can be just as instructive as the actual events.
I'm sitting here smoking my pipe and watching the eddies and it's instructive. People are beginning to talk about public unrest because they see no signs of retribution or acceptance of blame amongst politicians and bankers, indeed, some of the bankers who got us into this mess are now advising the government on how to manage it.....!
All over Europe people are looking nervously over their shoulders for signs of Fascist activity. The BNP are expected to benefit from the turbulance especially in the elections for the European parliament. Remember that Mosley and the Blackshirts were spawned by the inter-war depression and it took WW2 to knock them on the head.
The trend in management of the crisis in the banks seems to be taking a rational turn. There is a move to split the banks up into boring Captain Mainwaring banks, mortgage providers and risk-taking investment banks, all separated by firewalls. I seem to remember this was what it was like until the 1950s when arrogant politicians allowed the de-regulations that led to our present woes. The biggest culprits were the Tories, Thatcher and the mad Monk, they swallowed Friedman hook line and sinker and used the windfall of North Sea oil to finance a concerted attack on the unions, the mines, steel, ship-building, the railways and smoke stack industry in geeneral. They actually believed that wealth could be generated by shifting paper round and providing services. They ignored the basic truth that wealth can only be generated by taking a piece of material or an asset and adding value to it. In other words extraction, farming and manufacturing. Ask yourselves what the experience of these industries has been over the last fifty years and assess whether there could be a connection between this and our present woes.
There is another eddie that is notable by its absence, effective government action. The reports are that none of the initiatives trumpeted by Godron et al have actually started yet. They are still 'working on the details'.
So what can I deduse from watching the river? 2009 is going to be bloody and troubled, we will see no improvement until well into 2010 at the earliest and I have my doubts about that. One crazy statistic I heard last night: doe every £4 in tax the government is taking in they are spending £45. I have no idea whether this is correct but it rings true to me. Now that is frightening.
