From..A History of the County of Lancashire, Vol. 6. The Commissioners for deforesting in 1507 found that Over Barrowford had been let to farm at 4 pounds, Nether Barrowford with a parcel adjoing called Riston Thorns at 4 pounds and they granted them to the old tenants for Copyhold rents amounty to 12 pounds in all. The rental in 1527 shows that there were 19 seperate tenaments farmed, occupied by John Hayke, Lawrence Gargreaves, Bernard Hartly and others. The principal tenants in 1609 were Lawrence Townley of Carr, John Hartley of Admergill, John Hargreaves and Lawrence Hartley of Carr Mills..

ok...dont have the copies yet but I do have the information that is included on each of the 20 pages...thought I'd post that to get you all in gear for what is to come! I'd say it's going to tie a ton of Hartleys together, add the names of wives, and heaven only knows what else! The person who is gathering the file had to submit a request to the library for copies of all the pages and as soon as he gets them he'll scan and send to me..and you can be assured I'll transcribe them page by page and line by line for all of you to see and digest.
1) This was a small-ish card that had the following on it
William Hartley of Roughlee & Admergill
1667 – 1730
|
Henry Robinson of Padiham
|
John Hartley of
Roughlee and Lower Craggs
m. 1690-1739
Ellen Robinson
|
Henry Hartley
m. 1731-1800
Suzannah Lavender
|
Henry Robinson Hartley
2) This was a family tree, very detailed, tiny writing. Titled Hartley’s of Admergill
At the top was Alexander who died in 1563
3) This was another page of tree in 2)
4) This was a card with a list of wills, there were no wills in the file so it may be that it’s no use, or that the wills are elsewhere. The dates I presume are for when the wills were signed or something, there was no definite indication of what they were.
“ Copies & Transcriptions of Wills
John Hartley of Admergill 1/1/1662
Margaret Hartley of Admergill 26/9/1627
Ann Hartley of Roughlee 19/5/1730
John Hartley of Whitelee 16/11/1738
George Hartley of Overhouses 14/11/1768
Nathaniel Hartley 20/1/1773
James Hartley of Lower Admiregale 9/6/1800”
5) This was more family tree, entitled Hartley of Admergill p4 of(what I think said) Pence Gate
It started with George born in 1695 2nd son of Hartley of Roughlee, formerly of Admergill and went through about 3-4 generations down to May 9/Aug/1907, Susan Moon 1889 and Christopher 22/8/1886
6) This was another page that looked similar to 2) Someone had been through in pencil underlining names, it looked like the male line:
7) Alexander 31/7/1670 -> John 20/5/1705 -> George 28/5/1727
-> James -> May 1.8.90 -> James
8) This had more tree;
James Hartley 1/8/1790
Mary
|
John 23/10/1889
Mary Parker
|
(there’s a weird number here which confused me: 28.9.59)
1860
Robert
|
Something Brown
|
Minnie Brown
9) More tree
10) More tree
11) More tree
12) This was yet more family tree, titled Admergill of Fulshaw, the latest date I could see was of Joseph Hartley 3/11/1876
13) More tree
14) This was a list of baptisms and burials dated 1738-1757 and 1712-1760 respectively.
15) Cont.
16) List of burials 1685-1695 and Baptisms 1698-1734, and then Burials 1655-1679 Baptisms 1679-1697
17) Burials cont. 1599-1654
18) This was more baptisms from the Lome or Corne P.C. Register (presumably parish council?) 1599-1654
19) More Baptisms and Burials for 1654-1679
20-24) This was a conveyance for £63 between Edward Walker of Morpforth to John Hartley of Clough 22/1/1690
I have long suspected that these could well be the research carried out many years ago by Rosie Stephen who worked with Mrs Crowther on the Hartley pedegree. I didn't realise that they could be copied and delivered by post - I had understood that one had to visit the archives where the records are lodged to view them - so well done. Yet, I could be mistaken and these records are something else.
I lost touch with Rosie many years ago shortly, after she went to live in Basingstoke, before she had completed her research. She sent me various copies of her manuscripts which I still have, but some are unclear due to photocopying and small, light handwriting. I have copies of wills and the aforementioned burial records.
Alexander who died 1563 is a direct ancestor of mine and is the first name on my sheet No1. from which there a numerous descending pedgrees.
In reference to No 7 above, I have:

If Jim Fay is reading this: I have found no connection to Ellen Hartley 1788. I have tried to email you on both addresses but they have all been returned. This is what I wrote:
From the sparse records in my possession I can find no reference to EH b 1788c.
Ellen is a name that seems to have been passed down in the generation in one particular family from the Admergill area, which is only about a mile up the road from Barrowford. I have an Ellen b 18.5.69 who married Wm Broughton of Admergill. She is the daughter of Sarah and James Hartley of Water Meetings. James was the son of John who had two sisters named Ellen - the first Ellen died in 1692 - her sister Ellen was born in 1696. John was the son of Alexander of Barrowfored and Mary Hartley. Alexander was the son of John and Ellen Hartley of Admergill and Clongh, Barrowford.
So, no Ellen b 1788, but you may find further information that links her to the above.
In 1793. Wm Broughton appears to have had a second wife named Elizabeth Giokray. I have a 'line' that gives three children and it seems that Ellen is the mother as the firstborn is Mary 1793 - then Sarah 1797 and Nancy 1799.
Now, if Wm m Ellen in 1793, they couldn't have had a daughter named Ellen in 1788. What a pity I suppose Ellen 1788c could have been a grandaugher of the above mentioned James and Sarah as they had numerous children other than Ellen - at least four of them being boys. We must be careful of trying to fit a squar peg in a round hole.
Best wishes,
Stuart Hartley

My ancestors were Hartleys. They were the Colne and Nelson Hartleys of the mid 1800s. Some of them being tenant farmers from the Southfield area of Nelson. They were at farms such as Pinfold, Slate Delves, Float Bridge and, I think, Stoney Rakes, near Catlow. I am apparently related to Wallace Hartley, the Titanic's bandleader, and possibly to Sir William Pickles Hartley, the jam manufacturer.

Someone mentioned on this site there were old wills for the Hartleys...I have posted 1 of them but wonder about others. When I was in England I never suspected these Hartleys would be found in York information so never researched any of that area as I only knew of Fulshaw farm in Barrowford from my grandfather, John Smith, who drilled that place name into my brain. Bad ME!
