Questions about this subject keep cropping up amid closely related topics, so I thought it may be a good idea to expand on the subject. I will not go on about my qualifications to discuss Canal Boats so lets just give it a go and see what transpires.

Thanks both

I will get that book I think Callunna, sounds like a good one. (BTW - carnage!! lol - love it) Sounds like haulage is something to work into the overall costs, as I can work better down south, though I've heard moorings are even harder to come by. I will be going down in a couple of weeks though, and so will talk to marinas and walk the tow path and get chatting to people to get the inside scoop and perhaps get my name on some waiting lists - so how does that work BTW - you're allowed to put your name down before you have a boat??

What's your budget for a hull? I will keep an eye out for you. I think I'm going to have to go for a fitted out 2nd hand one that is liveable (is that a word?), but a bit of a shed (to keep within budget)

We've got our name down at three places (each with a long waiting list) even though we haven't a boat. In the event that one comes up, we're resigned to the fact that we'd just have to pay the fee until we did get a boat.

Like you, we're also considering a secondhand shed if it's the right size/shape/quality, as empty shells seem to be few and far between.

Do you get all the canal mags? Loads of info in there about available moorings etc.

Our budget is small! Overall, we've got about £50k - £60k to spend on the final project, including any fitting out that the boat needs. So we're probably looking at no more than £20k for a shell. Thanks for the offer to keep an eye open for us.Go to Top of Page

No - no mags unfortunately. I'm trying to minimise costs already!

Woah - my budget is even smaller Prob between 25-30k. I think I will definitely be in a shed! Luckily I am not looking for anything too big, and even luckier I have friends with very useful skills I can call upon if needed. Plus I'm not too concerned about the inside being nice - my main concern is the body is alright and the engine's good. I have very low interior design standards!!

I am a bit scared of saving up money and then buying a right-off because of the tight budget. But we'll just have to see how it goes I guess..... (eek)

I have just been reading around the tinterweb, and have seen "residential moorings" refered to as if they were different from "liveaboard" type moorings. I assumed these to be the same? Does anyone know why they might be considered different?

Keep an eye on BWB and their masters at DEFRA.  The whisper is that Defra want to privatise the canals.  There have been a couple of mentions in the press and on political comment programmes.  The time to start kicking and screaming is now!

The mags have been raising this issue recently. But what can you do? If the bean counters and pen pushers decide to do it then it will be done. Sad but true.

Who'd have thought a Labour government would privatise anything?

I would have to look into the matter more deeply before I form an opinion - in theory privatisation could actually enhance the waterways, but let's face it - that was the idea behind selling off the railways. You'd think folks would learn from history but alas it's never so.Go to Top of Page

H, write to Gordon Prentice and raise the matter with him.  If enough of us do it the message will get through.  The root of the matter is the deep doo-doo Defra is in because Big Gordon refused to give them funding to clear up the Single Farm Payments mess and so Defra are desperate for savings to finance themselves.  Blame Margaret Beckett, it happened on her watch!  (and then we put her in charge of the Foreign Office.....)

Privatisation is basically an accounting exercise of the "smoke and mirrors" type. The Government flogs off some valuable assets in return for a quick up front payment . Most of this soon disappears in payments to redundant staff and "unforseen extras"  due to the sloppy way the contracts are drawn up. The rest of the "value for money" comes from alleged "jam tomorrow" long-term savings. Tomorrow in this case means several elections away and after the perpetrators have taken their knightoods and run.

If you are really unlucky like my current Lords and Masters, you will find out too late that your buildings - dedicated to extracting Revenue for the public purse, have been flogged off cheap to an offshore company. Readers of Private Eye will remember that one.

I bet the private company interest in the waterways will be particularly intense in the area of their property holdings in view of the proposed relaxations in planning procedures. Let's hope the Government get deflected by the public outcry.

I sincerely hope he isn't looking this way, otherwise my early-retirement might come even earlier than I had bargained for!

In Staff Training circles the euphemism for telling the truth is called "attitude leakage". As my dear Granny would have said: "don't get me started on that, I've only come 'ere for a rest!"

Hiya Softie - welcome to OGFB. We do have another 'soft' southerner on here, but he redeemed himself by coming to live in Barlick permanently. I wouldn't say he was well 'ard but I wouldn't like to meet him in the boxing ring, what with him being more than a foot and a half taller than me.

Are you particularly interested in canal boats or were you just browsing this topic? I would love to hear your experiences/opinions etc.

We were remarking only t'other day that our decision to live on a barge is possibly a wise move. No worries about flooding!Go to Top of Page
