Here's a press release from the council: Release date: August 21, 2007 Supplied by: Barnoldswick Town Council Beating the Bounds working group Subject: BEATING THE BOUNDS Barnoldswick Town Council invites everyone again to Beat the Bounds! On Sunday 2nd September the annual community Beating the Bounds walk around the ancient boundaries of Barnoldswick takes place again. The Town Council invites all West Craven residents, tourists and visitors, to join in walking the whole or just part of the route. The 9-mile circular walk, starts from the Pavilion at Victory Park, Barnoldswick at 10.30am. Beating the Bounds is part of Pendle’s Walking Festival and is again expecting to welcome walkers from many parts of the Country. The ancient tradition of Beating the Bounds comes from the time before maps were drawn and was to ensure that our ancestors showed their children where the Town boundaries were. In 2006, Barnoldswick Town Council completed a £15,000 grant scheme funded by Pendle Council to provide boundary stones at significant points on the route, interpretive boards at Victory Park and Ghyll Church, a free descriptive walk leaflet and a community marquee. To symbolically enforce our boundaries again, walkers are invited to beat them with willow wands, which are provided free. Walkers of all ages are welcome but an adult should accompany children under 16. Dogs on leads are also welcome. The walk provides fantastic views of our Town and the Dales and uses the canal towpath for a part of the route. Part way around the walk, at Letcliffe Park, food and drink will be provided in the Beating the Bounds marquee. And walkers will be invited to join in our tradition of singing the Beating the Bounds Song. At the end of the walk the Town Council Chairman will present a commemorative medal and ribbon to all walkers. This interesting and scenic annual community walk is organised by Barnoldswick Town Council and led by Town Councillors Allan Buck, Margaret Bell and Martin Bell.

One or two on but no one is saying anything. I thought I would bring this back up ready for the beaters to post into. I was fully intending to do the walk this year (even sprayed my boots up with waterproofer) but was reminded yesterday that it was the AGM of ILP Clarion House so I thought I'd better attend that seeing as I'm on the committee. Warm bath and a cup of cocoa or similar in order for the beaters this year.

The weather didn't stop about 50 people turning up, and as the afternoon wore on it seemed to brighten up further. Our band played a few local songs while the walkers had lunch in the marquee, but we kaffled out of joining them on the second half of the walk. BK videoed a couple of the songs and I hope to be able to put them on YouTube shortly. I was forced to consume a bottle of Copper Dragon because when you sing outside with no microphone, your throat goes a bit dry. Word is that they're going to try and get the brewery to sponsor next year's walk. quote: Nasty weather over Rochdale way......
Oi! Well off topic, matey! I'm sure people will be delighted and enthralled to read about the Ellenroad trip in another post, but can't we just give Beating the Bounds a bit of its own space? It's only fair. I say this most pleasantly and I'm not having a pop, at you SCG, being one for straying off topic myself on numerous occasions.

I couldn't make this walk, but I spread the word around my weekly walking friends. They went and thoroughly enjoyed themselves, is that despite the weather. It was raining where we were with my Dad

It was nice to see all those people braving the wet weather and enjoying lunch at Letcliffe Park, they deserve recognition for supporting the event and well done to those who did the full 9 miles....

Hang on, not a word about Ellenroad.... Just making the point that the wet weather was general. Calm down Dearie.....

Looking forward to it, BK - though with some trepidation as I always have to shout my songs when we're playing al fresco with no PA. No room for gentle nuances and delicate tones.I'm sure I posted the next bit in the "What Grabbed Your Attention" post, but it isn't showing up. One or two of my other posts have gone AWOL too. Should I be getting paranoid that someone's sabotaging me, or shall I put it down to the quirks of the website? I'll plump for the latter. Anyroad, I thought it worth mentioning that according to the Sunday Times, Britons have spent at least £300,000 on ukuleles this year, twice what they spent 4 years ago. Maybe, as we downsize to live on the boat, I should sell my 3 guitars and take up the uke instead? |

H, I get the feeling I've lost a post occasionally but am not sure whether it's true and the site has eaten it or me in that I am mistaken..... On the whole, I think the site chews the occasional post up. Very rare....

FOR SALE: One rather fast and splendid Mac Intel Pro with loads of memory and gubbinsy things inside. Ideal for photography and rendering videos. Reluctant sale, owner gone bonkers and about to move onto canal boat so needs a MacBook instead. Only joking - I know I'd never tear you away from your PC comfort zone - hee hee But looking forward to seeing the vid. Eventually. Noticed that the BET got my name spelled wrong in the paper's report on the walk, whereas Vera from the CH phoned me up and double-checked. Bless her ... er, I mean him. It was from a press release from the council who should know better! Hah! I shall get my own back and mis-spell Allan Buck's name when I do the next council newsletter. That would be "Duck" of course, seeing as he put me down as a Sheldrake. |

Roger got my name wrong when he mentioned the Briercliffe website in the paper a couple of weeks ago. Well I suppose he didn't actually get it wrong but he made me a Mr.
