Hi, can anyone help with a query in my family tree please?  I'm researching the Cann family. Jessie Agnes Cann was born on 14/8/1892 at Jewell Mill, Reedley Hallows. Her mother, Louisa Cann (nee Bovett) was apparently living there at the time of the birth. I'm confused, as I thought that this was a water mill. The father was George Cann.

Can anyone shed any light on this please? Would I be able to get a list of the workers at the mill, and details of any tenants paying rent to live there in 1892?

Grateful for any help

Regards

Pauline

I can find her birth on ancestry, but cannot find any of them in 1901, or the parents in 1891.

You could try e-mailing Burnley Library to see if they have any info there.

Has there been a corruption here?  McCaan would be worth searching for.  My solicitor is called McCaan....  A Mark Caan and Son tendered to replace windows in Wellhouse Mill in 1899.  Another Mark Caan worked for Wild Brothers as a driver in WW2 and after.  See LTP 79/AO/03 page 22 where Jack Platt talks about him.  Jim Bailey of Colne told me in 2003 that Mark Caan was sacked from Wilds for driving a coach under a low bridge whilst on an unauthorised trip to Trawden, he damaged the roof.

Stanley, I tried McCaan, Can, Cam and I cannot find them. They must be there somewhere but I cannot see the wood for trees.

Pauline, have you any other info---birth places, years etc.

Thanks Moh, Stanley and Gloria for your swift replies. I will try Burnley library. Stanley, the surname is definitely Cann. Louisa Bovett was born in Morchard Bishop, Devon, in 1855. She married Charles Cann in 1874. All trace of Louisa vanishes after 1892, which is when her daughter Jessie was born. There must have been a family scandal, as on the birth certificate, the father is shown as  George Cann, who presumably was Charles' brother (but I can't find any proof of this). Jessie was brought up believing that Charles was her father, so  Louisa either died around about that time, or went to live with George.

Charles Cann and his family were living in Turton at the time of the 1901 census. Louisa isn't there, but Charles is shown as being married rather than widowed.

This is why I'm keen to understand what Louisa was doing living at the mill, because all of my other trails have gone cold.

In 1871 census there is this family in Morchard Bishop, Devon

Name Age
George Cann 15
John Cann 17
Mary Cann 44
Mary J Cann 12
Stephen Cann 53

In 1861 there is this family Charles was born in Morchard Bishop but they are living in Upton Payne

Charles Cann 6
Jane Cann 12
John Cann 49
Mary Cann 17
Peter Cann 9
Sarah Cann 46
Sarah Cann 3

Would have thought there was a connection between these two. there is a Charles in the 1871 who is a servant, he was born in Morchard Bishop but living in Newton St. Cyres.

Back again, I have looked at all the deaths from 1892 until the census in 1901 and I can't see her. There are only four Louisa Canns and they were ages 15,78,0,3, so none of them fit.

Found the same George as in 1871 with his parents in 1891, and with his sister in 1901 in Morchard Bishop, wonder if this is him and he never came up to Lancashire with Louisa. Just speculation

Hi Gloria,

thanks for all of your help on this, but unfortunately there are too many Canns (especially George and Charles) to unravel this. I'm sure that there are connections between the two Cann families that you found in Morchard in 1861 and 1871, but the likelihood is that they were cousins - Morchard seems to have been made up entirely at that time of Canns! The ones in the 1861 census are definitely my lot, and the 1871 Charles (Newton St Cyres) is also mine. Charles' brother George was born in 1847 and had left home by 1861. He was a 15 year old stable boy in Exeter. Assuming that I have the right George here, the last trace that I can find of him was with his wife Maria in the 1881 census, living at Upton Pyne. He then vanishes, which is a bit inconsiderate of him. I plan to go to the library sometime to see if there are any rent books etc going back to the mill in 1892; maybe that will shed some further light about who Louisa was living with. Otherwise, I'm clutching at straws!

I appreciate your efforts.
