The cherry tree stump on the Green was today grubbed out, so hopefully that will stop any honey fungus type infection>
Wonder if there is a plan to replace?
Noticed that whilst sweeping he had issues with the still loose turfs where Cllr Whipp et all planted some spring bulbs.

A family has just moved into an old house in the village and they found what looked like a file box in a skip left by the previous occupants. When they found what was in the box they had the good sense to bring it to the village's local history society. It has all the original documents about the house to as far back as the mid-1800s, lovely copperplate script documents in large format. A treasure for the local history society, with so much information about the house and the people who lived there. How could anyone throw such documents into a skip? The box also has recent documents including bills from builders from 2006 for works on the house.
EDIT: Since writing this, Mrs Tiz has got hold of the box of documents (she's active in the local history society) and they look even more interesting than we thought and seem to be taking the story back to the late 1700s. There's an interesting part where someone in the early days borrowed £80 towards the £162 -10s-0d price of the house and failed to pay it back. The debt didn't get paid off until about 100 years later!

Also the sight of the squashed railings on the junction outside Gisburn road School this morning, which I now note have been removed and replaced with temporary plastic barriers

Should be in the wildlife section really; but what attracted my attention just now was the ruddy great big rat in my back garden. Slightly smaller than a hippo I reckon!
Measure with a micrometer.
Mark with a pencil.
Cut with an axe. |

They can grow big Jules! Eigg once killed one that was as big as her!
Love all the numerologists coming out of the woodwork with theories about the date, 11/11/11. The Egyptians have closed the Pyramids for the day just in case..... My mind is on a different 11/11.

Horace Batchelor, Radio Luxembourg...... That shows how old I am! I can still see the tuning dial on the big Ecko 8 valve superhet cabinet radio with a 16" speaker! During the war I used to wonder why we still got radio broadcasts out of occupied Europe from places like Hilversum. Droitwich, was that what became BBC long wave?
Martha sent me this LINK. I'd recommend it particularly to the ladies, it may be too painful for some of the blokes!

Last night I was outside the Union in Colne awaiting a bus when a brawl occured.
Rich entertainment value, although under the Queensbury rules I think that the referee would have stepped in after the first punch.
2 obviously very drunk and obnoxious people seemed to be throwing insults at this guy who was a bit smaller than them. They kept on, the inevitable happened. 3 punches for each of them, one was on the ground unconscious, the other was on his backside with blood streaming down his face. As far as I could tell the others never even got their fists up let alone punched him.
Police called: the small bloke is arrested and goes quietly, one goes off in an ambulance and the other is arrested and continues to hurl abuse at the police.

What attracted my attention in the gathering dusk this afternoon in Cambridge, was the sight of Professor Stephen Hawkins in his chariot going home for his tea, with his young blonde carer trying her best to keep up with him. He was well wrapped up and wearing a flat cap.
