Barlick History Society has been running for over 28 years.Founder members Dorothy Carthy and Margaret Lancaster are still members.
The Society meets in the winter months - usually the last Thursday in the month. Various lectures take place based in the local library(upstairs) at 7.30pm. Admission is £1.30 and all are welcome. It is not only the opportunity to hear some eloquent speakers but also to chat to likeminded people.
During the summer months there are usually a couple of trips arranged to places of historical interest. - Eden Camp is being considered for this summer.
Details of talks are placed in the local newspaper, or committee members can be contacted for further information.
Chairman - Dennis Cairns - Tel : 812956
Secretary - Lynda Simmons - Tel : 816100
Speaker Sec - Chris Goodwill - Tel : 812783

Linda, why not post the latest events on here as well as in the newspapers. Use the Events calender on the home page for example.

Just a thought.

Lynda, I don't want to sound as though I am knocking the new site and I know it's early days but take note of what has happened on One Guy.  There are two reasons why it has succeeded, one is content and the other is participation.  They are inextricably linked because nobody has enough time to enter all the information needed to produce an archive rich site.  You should think seriously about a format that allows people to put up their own material on the site and a forum for discussion.  If you dissect one guy you will see there are two strands, the historical input from people like John Turner in Ramsbottom and John Clayton in Barrowford and the other sources of info that crop up in the topics, all of which are archived and are accessible through the home page search engine.  The sad fact is that websites which are, in effect, advertisements, and don't allow interaction, don't attract repeat visitors.  Forget Oneguy, look at Wykepedia, the fastest growing resource on the web.

I'm planning to go on the History Society walk this evening, led by Dennis Cairns. It will be interesting to discover what shopping was like in Barlick in the past. I imagine we'll look at premises not only in the town centre, where most shops are found today, but also at those which were once lively outlets on street corners throughout the town.

Meet at 6.30pm, Town Square. Go to Top of Page
