Heres something that impressed even this jaded old cynic.  A sub notebook, far from a new idea, they've been around for over a decade.  Usually horrendously expensive (over a grand is typical) and have never sold in any real quantity since a 'real' notebook computer is far cheaper.  This one found its way over here late last year and has sold like hot cakes, basically because its cheap.  It has most of the toys you find on a modern notebook computer (Wireless and Webcam) but is cheaper than a 'real' Notebook.  Around £220 including VAT.

Its sold as standard with a version of Linux which seems to be aimed at children with big colourful graphics, but its fairly easy to install any PC operating system on it.  This one is running my OS of choice (Ubuntu Linux) but it will run Windows XP just as well (You have to buy it yourself though, its not included).  One or two small provisos, it has a solid state 'flash' hard drive and no CD/DVD drive.

If you want a small computer that isn't seriously compromised like a PDA or smart phone - Get one.

Its called the Asus EEE PC and is widely available in the UK but is frequently out of stock due to it selling so well.

As Pluggy said above, I'm planning to build my own PC to replace the 5-year-old one I use for home and work. It will have Ubuntu Linux as the operating system because I've used this successfully on the present PC for 4 years. But the PC I build could just as well have Windows installed on it so I hope to relate my experiences on the OGFB forums to let others see how I get on and perhaps copy the build.

I've changed a hard drive and added more memory to a PC before but never built one - it's now time to take the risk! I've looked at components on the Dabs web site and made my list then sent it to Pluggy for approval. As far as I could tell everything was compatible but I thought it better to check with someone with more experience than me (and Pluggy also uses the Ubuntu Linux operating system so he could warn me if any component would clash with that).

When the list is finalised and I start ordering from Dabs I'll start a new thread and let the world know the details. If it goes OK then someone else might be tempted to follow in my footsteps. If it blows up and burns my money then you can have a laugh!

EDIT: Mrs Tiz has just read the above and pointed out that *she* won't get a laugh because she'll have to put up with me in a bad mood if it goes wrong!

Part way through my email discussions with Pluggy I suddenly stopped getting responses and I'm wondering what has happened. Perhaps my messages are now accidentally going into his spam filter, or he has gone on holiday, or maybe he is fed up with me pestering him! (But I think he's more resilient than that!). I've sent him a PM now through this forum. I'll phone as a last resort but that's more of an intrusion.

I replied to your last email. I've replied to your PM too.  Either the ATX or MATX options shouldwork fine, ultimately its your decision since its your money. Cheapskate me would go with the MATX lolol

The email must have disappeared in cyberspace but I got your PM, thanks. I hope to be ordering parts tomorrow.

What's your view on wearing an anti-static wrist band while building a PC? A good idea or unnecessary? I've not worn one before, just earthed myself before touching anything - but I wasn't building a PC then.

Don't wear those fancy Nylon knickers J bought you for Valentine's Day. They generate static.

So that's what has been interfering with my PC - must change back to cotton!

I've messed around with the innards of literally hundreds of computers in my time, never worn a wrist strap, never blown anything up that could be attributed to static.

If its a concern leave the mains cord attached but with the socket switch in the off position (it doesn't disconnect the earth).  Then every time you touch the case (which happens regularly when you're working inside the case) any static will be dissipated to earth.

Back to the main topic. I didn't resist for long, and I have got my new ASUS Eee netbook now and all seems OK.  I have no hangups about windows etc, so using XP with Avast free anti virus. (Actually, I don't know enough to change things even if I wanted to!).

Thanks Pluggy, that confirms my feelings. I've ordered my PC parts from Dabs but one of them will be in stock in 5 days time so I probably won't get the delivery until a week on Monday. Once I get going I'll start a thread on it.

Good luck with the Asus machine Tripps, it sounds good for the money. By the way, the motherboard I ordered is Asus and I've had reliable PCs with  Asus boards before.

[EDIT, 2nd September 2010]  I built the computer, in fact built two of them. For the record and for easy access in the future here is the link to the OGFB thread where I describe the build...
