Khaki in colour and sombre in content. "Cravens Part in the Great War", there will not have been many households in Barlick and what was then a much larger Craven Area, that did not have at least one copy of this book. In my immediate Family there would have been at least four and I still have two of them, albeit that one is with my son on Anglesey. Over the years I have seen them at jumble sales, in second hand shops and in piles of rubbish for disposal, even left behind when a house has been vacated. They will have turned up all over the place, I have come across them in Wales, the Isle of Wight and Hampshire, the two that I have belonged to my Father and Maternal Grandfather.
Many years ago I went through one of them from cover to cover noting those from Barlick who had given their lives in the service of King and Country, my notes are long gone so I am going to do it again, a few pages at a time, but this time I will include other local places within an approximate seven mile radius, Gisburn, Foulridge, Earby and so on. I will post my findings on here with the name, address and a precis of other details, as some are quite extensive, each name is to have the page number for my reference so that if anyone wants further information, I can soon find it. In a good number of cases there is a photograph, these I will copy and post in groups of ten at suitable intervals. In the book there are 391 pages so I will use a few abreviations hopefully all self explanatory, ie, KIA:- Killed in Action. MPD:- Missing presumed Dead. DOW:- Died as a result of Wounds, and one that is all too frequent, DFD:- Died from Disease or Illness.
One Man was responsible for the existance of these books and that was Mr, Walter Morrison Esq, JP of Malham Tarn who put forward the idea of the book and defrayed the entire cost.
There is quite a bit about the war itself up to page 50, including the Rohilla Tradgedy, then comes the dreadful list of those who did not come home, and so it is that on page 57 we find the first of Barlicks Sons, and is as follows:-

2nd Lieut Harry Thornton Pickles, 3rd Bn Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regiment (SR) second son of Mr Stephen Pickles JP, CC, Of Raysgill Barnoldswick KIA 26th April 1916 aged 26. P57.

In these first ten pages the extent of family loss is made very clear for it was in the Village of Carleton nr Skipton that this comes up:-

P53,  Lieut. Anthony E.K. Slingsby, 1/6th Duke of Wellington's (WR) Regiment, Son of Mr and Mrs J A Slingsby Carla Beck Carleton. KIA France 14th July 1915. Aged 26.
P57,  Captain Arthur Morris Slingsby, MC 56th Punjabi Rifles,  2nd son of Mr and Mrs J A Slingsby KIA 8th March 1916 in Mesopotamia. Aged 30.
P58.  Lieut. Stephen Slingsby of HMS Defence, 4th son of Mr and Mrs J A Slingsby. KIA in North Sea June 1916. Aged 24.
This out of a total of five sons all serving.

Lothersdale is the next local Village with on P62.  Lieut Alec Wilson, 1st Herefordshire Regiment, Son of Mr and Mrs F J Wilson JP of Lothersdale. KIA 26th March 1917 in Egypt.
P54, Lieut. The Hon, C. A. Lister Royal Marines, Hood Battalion, Only surviving son and heir of Lord Ribblesdale of Gisburne Park DOW 28th August 1915. Elder Brother killed in 1904 in Somaliland.
Greystones, Gisburn.  Lieut. George Proctor, Lancs Fusiliers, only son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Proctor. KIA 7th April 1918 aged 24. P70.
Marton is on P73, Which Marton is not clear,  2nd Lieut, Joseph Bryan Bushby South Staffs Regiment, son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Bushby, Schoolhouse Farm Marton, DOW, 4th October 1918 aged 26.

It is difficult to leaf through the pages of this book without becoming sidetracked by the amazing things that crop up, the  pages up to now are all Officers and on the very last one there is a Reverend Gentleman from Bentham, a Former Headmaster of Bentham Grammar School and Domestic Chaplain to the King he was Killed in the last month of the war having earned not only a DSO, and MC, but a VC as well. The next three entries are all for Earby with the fourth for Foulridge:-
P73. 2nd, Lieut. Richard Welbury Shuttleworth, RAF, Son of Mrs Shuttleworth, Beech Cliffe Earby, Accidentally Killed whilst flying in England 24th August 1918 aged 24.
P75.  Dr Phillip D, Pickles of HMS Russel DOW after sinking of  his ship aged 33.
P76,  2nd Lieut, John Granville Berry MC, West Yorks Regiment. Younger son of Mr and Mrs W N Berry of Hawthorne House Earby, MPD 16th August 1917 aged 20.
P78,  2nd Lieut, S,A.F. Pilgrim, Tank Corps, only son of Mr and Mrs W A Pilgrim of Noyna Mede Foulridge. KIA 24th September 1918 aged 20. He shares this page with Lord Lucas who had residences at Sawley and Wigglesworth.

Very interesting material, Peter, thank you.

I hope you continue to post various items. I already recognise one name from Earby - I used to go out with a lad who had exactly the same fairly unusual  name - it must have been his grandfather's brother in the list.

I understand there's a website dedicated to this too:

Thank you Cally, I was unaware of the website, it naturally covers everything I am attempting to do in digital book form, but I will continue as I hope that by restricting the search area, It may be of some help to anyone researching local family history.  Since my last post I have gone through pages 80 to 277, just logging page numbers and surnames. This is the first time I have gone through this copy which was my Grandfathers, earlier reading was from my Fathers, now on Anglesey. And, I keep finding bookmarks, not obvious as they are between the pages and not protruding, a map, a medal ribbon and a Government Form are just three. Earby has a few Street Names that reflect some of the Surnames of those in the book, Shuttleworth, Waddington and Cowgill, I have come across tonight. Tomorrow I will begin to add some more names and known details before going through the remainder of the book. There are 114 more pages and towards the end it becomes condensed so there is much to do yet.

There will be a delay in addng photographs to this topic as I have sought permission from the above website to copy and use theirs, this would save much time, added to which getting a copy of this book into the scanner is not easy, if no reply is forthcoming, then I will do it the hard way. All of the foregoing were Officers, what comes next are the other ranks in manageable numbers:-

P80.  The first entry;
Pte, Walter M Johnstone, Black Watch Regt, Son of Mr and Mrs Johnstone formerly of Park Rd Barnoldswick, KIA 8th September 1914 aged 35 years.
P80.  Pte, J, Crossley, Duke of Wellington's Regt, Formerly of Bolton by Bowland, DOW November 1914.
P84.  Pte Jno Fawcett, Lancs Fusiliers of Barnoldswick KIA 13 February 1915 aged 32 years.
P86.  Pte, Sam Campbell, Canadian Corps, Son of Mr and Mrs Campbell 58 Gordon St, Burnley formerly of Barnoldswick MPD 22nd April 1915 aged 23 years.
P88.  Sgnt, Thomas Foster, Duke of Wellington's Regt, formerly of Skipton lately of Foulridge, KIA May 1915 aged 29 years.
P89.  Pte, R. Fletcher, East Lancs Regt, Son of Mr and Mrs G Fletcher, Ings Avenue, Barnoldswick, KIA 9th May 1915 aged 21 Years.
P90.  Pte, Arthur Wilson, Duke of Wellington's Regt, Son of Mr and Mrs J W Wilson of 21 Albion St Earby. KIA 16th May 1915 aged 23 years.
P91.  Pte W T Maunders, Duke of Wellington's Regt, of Barnoldswick, Gassed at hill 60 5th May 1915.
P92.  Pte, V. Ecclestone, East Lancs Regt, Son of Mr William Ecclestone Barnoldswick KIA 22nd June 1915.
P92.  Sgnt, William H Moore, East Lancs Regt, Son of Mrs Arthur Ingham 1. West View Kelbrook, KIA 9th June 1915 aged 22 years.
P93.  L,Cpl, Benjamin Ormerod, RAMC, formerly of Barnoldswick, DOW June 1915 aged 30 years.

As I go forward with this I am noting the entries by Place, Street, Family, Date and Age etc. the observations from this to appear later, two hitherto unknown family members have already come to light whilst proceeding through this undertaking. My fervent hope is that others may find similar benefits.

Hi Thomo,

Glad to be of help. You may want to cross reference between the book and our site, as there are a few anomalies within its pages i.e. wrong dates regiments etc, no surprise given they started to collate information in 1916 . Because of the mistakes we’ve used the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and Soldiers Died during the Great War Data as our benchmarks.

You may also want to use the Newspaper Articles from the Craven Herald & the West Yorkshire Pioneer, which you will find (in blue) on each web page of any individual soldier by clicking on the their named links.

Please don’t think I’m to show granny how to suck eggs, you would be surprised just how many people over look them which is a shame as there are large number of interesting articles amongst them .

I’m familiar with the oneguyfrombarlick site I used to be a member until I lost my password, maybe its time to contact them and get reinstated.

Good luck with your project and many thanks for contacting me.

Very Best Wishes

Chris

There certainly will Heather, and thanks to you with the link there will be updates. My respects and thanks also go to Chris Foster for his co-operation, he says he is "Not trying to teach Granny how to suck eggs" at 71+ I don't mind a bit. that is what life as I see it, is all about. Just a big learning curve, even history moves on.

The first of my ancestors to show up: Hartley Dent.

It really is sad to see all these photos of such fresh faced, smiling young lads and to know that they never returned home.Go to Top of Page
