The activities of FID, the small finds scheme and responsible users have transformed the official perception of metal detectorists over the last ten years. They are making a very valuable contribution to our knowledge and every archaeological dig now uses the fraternity especially for searching spoil heaps for missed objects. High tec. dowsers?

Wow Ian. I didn't realise metal detecting was so serious. It does make sense though!
Get them started Vee. Give Ringo, Stanley or Doc a nudge and ask them to set it up on the forum...then start posting. Going off previous threads, I'm sure there will be a response. A good place to discuss suppliers, latest techniques etc.

Didn't we just cover card making under the Art topic?
What happens if you just find something, without the aid of a metal detector, and pick it up? I have a very odd little "stone" which i picked off a drovers path (lawning, pronounced lonning) in Cumbria. It is like a bit of iron ore, but appears to have a face carved in it...if it were an archeological find, would I be in some sort of trouble?

Belle, dont worry about your casual find, plenty of people interested in history use the technique of "fieldwalking" to make "eyes only" finds turned up by the plough such as pottery shards or fragments of old buildings buried for centuries. If these finds are mapped and recorded they can be a very valuable contribution to our understanding of the past.
With regard to your "odd stone" you could ask a representative from the PAS (Portable Antiquities Scheme) to try to identify your find, it may well have some significance to the area in which it was found.
Here is a link to the Portable Antiquities Scheme. It explains how the voluntary scheme works and gives information on the Treasure Act.

.This is the Wikipedia entry for the Treasure Act

Take a look, they are very informative.

Would it throw anything up if we took metal detacting to BJ's site near Walton Spire or was that before metal?

From reading the articles about this site it would seem that it has links to many periods of history. Metal detecting is by definition only useful for artifacts from what we perceive as the Iron Age onwards.
You would need the permission of the landowner to search. If a particular area is a scheduled monument or has scheduled status, it is illegal to excavate on such sites without the permission of The Secretary of State which is rarely given except to National Archeological Bodies.

Walks around Barlick?
...so the one my dog enjoyed...
over Monkroyd...up Calf Hall road...up past the newly refurbished mill...onto Manchester Road...across the top of Letcliffe park and down onto Kelbrook road. Turn right and down to the canal.
Then follow the canal all the way through to the locks, and back via greenberfield lane (spelling?) |

Hi all,
I have seen from the previous forum that some of you like guessing games. (ie, whats for sale at the local tesco). So I have a new one for you, whats my new hobby? Again, no point to it - just a bit of fun.
Mel - you can't join in - you know the answer.
