Mr Stephenson
Hey Stanley you don't seem to have come to terms even yet, with Mr Stephenson's magnificent win at the General Election. 17512 of your fellow citizens think otherwise. and Here you are repeating tittle tattle from the "Daily/Sunday Mail" heavens forbid

Frank ....Your use of the word "magnificent " seems to be juvenile and intended to provoke.....as is the whole style of your recent postings on this topic ..
What do you hope to achieve ?

Bradders please read your last post..that seems to be intended to provoke ...Frank's comments seem to me to be an ongoing exchange between him and Stanley, they both give and get, the rest of us can sit back and take it in the same way we would if we were reading the comics. I think they both probably feel much better after an exchange of posts (barbs) and go about their day feeling re charged. cheers

Moh, I think it was a misprint, I wouldn't be worth 65p!
Frank, read my post again, it was quite clear. Population growth is a threat to the world, any fule know that. But that wasn't what I was talking about. Stephenson story not 'tittle tattle', he confirmed it and I thought it was a perceptive comment by HRH. Pendle Tories are very active in the letter columns of the BET. Looks like a concert party to me. Now why would they be doing that? See my letter in next week's paper.
Sorry Herb, you're wrong. Correcting Frank gets boring but I feel it is my public duty to try to improve his reading skills and correct his misapprehensions. Brad is right, no local political victory can be described as 'magnificent' when it was backed by at least £250,000 of funding from a tax-dodger. Frank knows as well as I do that in the end the truth will out. By the way, It was Frank who raised that subject as an afterthought. I never mentioned Gordon Prentice or the dodgy funding. This is Frank's style, obfuscate a perfectly clear posting about my dislike of the use of the word 'breeding' for human procreation and question an authenticated report by denigrating it as 'tittle tattle'.No mention of any recognition that I might have a point about echoes of Galton which was not intended as a 'barb' but as a non-controversial observation.

In 1698 over-population was a hot topic. See this link for Malthus. In 1700 world population was estimated at 610million, in 2000 it was 6billion, best estimate at the moment is it will be 9billion in 2050. I wonder what Malthus would have to say about that? It's generally recognised that the way this number could play out is that food shortages will cause mass migrations and that this, rather than the number, will be the problem. It's a biggy and nobody has any answers.

I’ve been thinking. It’s quite obvious that my retailing the Stephenson/HRH story upset Frank. He regards such a snippet as Tittle Tattle and I see it as a “perceptive remark”. Let me justify my point of view. Rightly or wrongly (and it doesn’t really matter) my understanding of what Prince Philip said was that he was questioning how being an insurance salesman qualified someone for governance. I see politics as the pursuit of power, governance as the way that power is used. Increasingly, and Blair was a shining example in my opinion, it is the pursuit of power that is the goal not the desire to get into governance in order to improve society, what is often called conviction politics. If I look back to the giants of the past I see people who went into politics with broad experience, often specific skills and it was these attributes which floated them to the top of the political pool. I remember Blair having a TV opportunity on an archaeological dig in his constituency run by Julian Richards (Blood of the Vikings) during which it became painfully obvious that he had no knowledge of the Vikings in the NE, history was a closed book to him. Remember Cameron demonstrating that he was under the impression that we were junior partners to the Americans in 1940? Think of your own examples of individual ignorance. Jump forward to the COBRA bunker during the Iraq war when not a single politician sat round the table had any experience of war and military service. Think of the examples of knee-jerk responses by politicians deprived of the backing of their civil servant’s briefings. Remember Woollass being sandbagged by Joanna Lumley during the Gurkha pension controversy? All these examples (and many more) indicate to me that many of our politicians are inept and even incompetent. It seems to me that what is lacking is broad experience of real life business, finance and even the law. Certainly a lack of knowledge of history. This all flashed through my head when I saw the report of the Stephenson/HRH meeting. Rightly or wrongly I thought this was the point that Prince Philip was making. That’s why I described it as perceptive.

Bradder magnificent was the correct word to use. The election win was magnificent, would you expect me to say the narrow victory or the lucky so& so ???? I don't know what you are talking about and it looks like neither do you. My style of posting is my style of posting like it or lump it, that is what it is. I also take offence at your one sided view of I am provoking Stanley, do you not see Stanley is trying to provoke ME LOL Back in the Box Bradders, Stanley can defend himself and so can I. What passes between all of us on here is a kind of debate, it's the best we can do using the written word, rather than face to face like in the Pub. Best regards Frank

maybe HRH was simply making conversation, and was surprised that someone left a lucrative career for politics, hardly perseptive. Could I suggest that we have a topic "POLITICS-YOUR PERSPECTIVE" and leave this out of general topics? cheers

My attention was drawn to the matter of Mr Christopher Wheeler, the Chief Spokesman for the RAC, who retired yesterday after 45 years service. At a press conference, on the pavement outside the Midlands Area Headquarters, he said how disgusted he was by the way he had been treated, and also how the RAC were wasting and frttering away the member's membership fees.
He said that since the last motorcycle patrols finished, about 35 years ago, all he had done each day was to sit in his cosy office in the corner of his workshop, across the yard round the back, drinking tea and reading edifying books and the Daily Mail. He agreed that this had allowed him to have become Brain Of Britain on four occasions (with four different "special subjects"), but it was no way to treat a fully trained spokesman, not to mention the RAC membership and their subscriptions.
Every silver lining has a cloud.

"... reading edifying books and the Daily Mail. He agreed that this had allowed him to have become Brain Of Britain on four occasions..."
Perhaps I need to start reading the Daily Mail?
By the way, have you been following the crisis at De La Rue, the security and banknote printers? Some of the bosses have been forging paper specifications which are critical in any security printing. The Indian government seems to have uncovered it - they were one of the company's big customers for their rupee notes. Seems you can't even trust the security industry nowadays!

Frank, it's you who keeps harking back to the Pendle election. If you take the trouble to read what I wrote I never mentioned it, it was you that went back to it.
"I await with bated breath the investigation into how Lord Ashcroft was instrumental in persuading 17512 peole from Pendle to vote for Mr Stephenson. Dead Horse Stanley time to stop flogging it !!!!"
There you go again! I don't need to flog anything. Haven't brought it up in the topic, you did. Time will tell Frank and you know it as well as I do. Methinks you do protest too much.
Take no notice Bradders, you chime in whenever you feel like it. It's an open topic.

Good piece on Woman's Hour about the resurgence of ricketts. It's a disgrace in this day and age.

As long as you support my position said Stanley
Stanley who has ever brought up Lord Ashcroft more than your good self ?? Honestly now. Do you want me to count the post's you have made slagging off Ashcroft?? "With your Ashcroft bought the votes line"??. Which if he did means you think 17512 Pendle People are fools. They are only fools because they disagree with Your Viev. You have lost on this subject so for goodness sake stop pedalling the same old line, 17512 people believe you are wrong, can't you see that ??? I was going to stop replying to your clear political views, but decided we need an alternative arguement and that looks like this is me.
