Grand Alliance. In Evansville, Ind., after a fist fight, Steeplejack John Bice, 29, refused to press an assault charge against Partner John Mervin, 36, explained soberly: "We work together on tall buildings and have to depend on each other."

WITH CARROT CRAMPTHORN’S SQUAD AT DOG PIT DYEWORKS. Deep, axle-breaking ruts brim-full of oozing semi-liquid mud, the cindery lane at best being little more than a weed-choked cart track caused our heavily laden Morris L.D. van to iolently pitch and roll from side to side like an obese drunk. The loud noises escaping from the cargo space behind the cab partition created a weird cacophony of rattling, bumping ,scraping and grinding, resulting from the heavy load of steel tool boxes clanking together; oxygen and propane gas cylinders rolling, jostling and striking each other, and the variety of of groaning and grating sounds of vibrating steel body panels as the protesting Morris crawled through the mire in bottom cog; the diesel engine throatily growling as our squad of Phoenix Boilermakers steadily advanced through the murky gloom of an early morning in the November of 1963.

Hi all-just a quick post to say hello and let you know Im still around. Great reading as usual..Tom-that pic of the Bircham lads a few pages back,,Graham Fisher 3rd from right on back-I wonder if hes the same guy I used to work with at TVR in Nottingham? He was a right laugh,,we called him fish cus he used to drink like one. I worked on Aylesbury prison with him when Lester Piggott was looking for his soap and he got me locked in the officers mess room for half a day for the crack. He denied any knowledge of it but I knew better. Havnt heard from any of the TVR lads since Ieft so would be great to hear from you if you read SJC.....

Cheers Tipp. When I was there Colin Campbell was MD and Barry Shakespeare and Gordon Bently directors. Think they have a base in Isle of Mann or Wight now?

Dick, you'd think HQ would be in the middle of the most work wouldn't you. An island seems like a funny place for a jack's business.

Skytec Steeplejacks is based on the Isle of Wight, but that's just the office, all the equipment, vans etc. are based in Kent.
The second edition of my book "Steeplejack Origins" is almost ready for publishing, I've made a few changes, corrected a few mistakes and written a new chapter about the development of chimney felling, just waiting for a final check through the text by one of the family. I've also got my next book planned out, i will start writing when i've got time, probably some time next year.
