I was born in 1945 and lived at 10 North Street, Barlick.   Park Road then seemed to be populated almost exclusively by members of my family....at 46 Park Road my grandmother Eleanor (Nellie) Harrison lived with her sister Edna Bowker, and at different times, other sisters including most recently (till 1989) Grace Simpson.   Grace previously lived further down Park Road with her husband Alf Simpson (at one time Chairman of Barlick UDC)....their son Jack and his wife Shirley also had a house in Park Road, and Alf's brother Billy Simpson (married to Bell another of my grandmother' sisters) had the Butcher's shop in Park Road.

I have fond memories of catching Sticklebacks and Bullheads in 'Cloggers Beck' and lackin' (playing) in an area between North Street and Forty Steps....I remember there used to be a big wooden shed next to the rough track going down to Forty Steps, and at one time it contained a huge fabricated shoe that I think was built for a stage production which included "The Old Woman who lived in a shoe".   On some occasions we go up Esp Lane to 'The Springs' which was then farmed by my great uncle Maurice Dewhurst (formerly married to another of my grandmother's sisters Annie).

I recall my friends from North Street included the Warrington lads, the Bracewell sisters, Wright, Broughton and Peckover boys.

I have a vague memory that, as a family, my brother John and I with our father and mother Frank and Joyce Harrison used to call in on folk living in Gisburn Road.   I feel that it could have been 203 Gisburn Road which is an address on funeral cards relating to Francis and Rose Harrison my great grandparents.....it seems that they perhaps ran a grocery shop or similar at that address.    In the vagueness of early memories I also associate the name 'Auntie Liza' with the same area.....this lady is Elizabeth (nee Harrison - I'm unsure of her married name).....I would  be most grateful for any information regarding this Gisburn Road reference.

In the early 1950s my family moved to the south coast and my grandmother used to post a copy of 'The Dalesman' each month.  There was a cartoon character called Young Fred who'd get up to some mischievious antics.....it was captioned in dialect and after a couple of years I began to have a little difficulty in figuring out what it said....but in my defence I think it did get rather extreme at that time.     It reminds me of an occasion when I returned 'up north' with my wife on holiday, staying with my uncle Jack in Cowling.    The holiday was in late July/early August and on a day which happened to be the 12th of August (the 'Glorious 12th') we had lunch in a moorland Pub.  Sitting in the inglenook was a chap with a girt stick and a Collie dog - Jack goes over to him......"Na then" says Jack "how't shooting going".   Now Jack had a wonderful strong accent......but when this chap started to answer - at length and with an even more pronounced accent  - Jack would from time to time nod and say 'Aye' or 'Na then'.    Eventually Jack returned to our table and, looking somewhat embarrassed, he said  "I couldn't understand a ruddy word he said".....

A bit early but.....Christmas Greetings.

You've got to hand it to the Catholics.....  I never knew the priest went round collecting off the absentees.

Pete

The Broughtons you remember on North Street - actually Ivy Terrace - were my dad Neville and his sister Barbara, my grandma Millie and her mum Annie Smith. Dad didn't move far - I grew up in James Street - and now he lives with my mum on King Street. [There was also on Ivy Terrace  Barry Broughton and his mum and dad]. Anyway, I'm down south now, and left Barlick at 18. My Aunty Barbara died 8 years ago.

The Bracewell sisters you mention were next door to my dad's place - their parents Florence and Sidney always came to our house on Christmas Day morning for a sherry and a look at what 'Santa' had brought me and my brother. This continued well into my 20s. I liked Florence and Sidney - Sidney had an allotment on Crow Foot Row, and I used to go and get brandlings for fishing off his compost heap. Florence went to a 'Good Old Days' show once and got herself on the tele laughing her head off. Their daughter Dorothy ran the newsagents there used to be at the top of Butts for a long time, with her husband Ken.

When I was small, Edwin lived next to grandma's on Ivy Terrace. He kept pigeons and our cat once got one. He was iliterate Edwin - not uncommon then. The Waddington's were still there.  Along with Mr Peckover on James Street - my dad and Derek Burgess has to break into his house as he died in his bed.  The sort of morbid excitement any 8 yr old relishes, I'm afraid.

I think the Grace Simpson that Pete mentioned might be my 'Aunty' Grace. She was the best friend of my mum's mum, Ada Thorpe nee MacDonald. There were 4 MacDonald sisters: Ada, Vera, Flora and Eva - Eva was the last to go 3 months back. Their dad Christopher - 'Kit' - buily James Street with his dad - and the top house on James Street is of a slightly different design to the rest being built as it was for them.

Richard, great to hear from you....yes I referred to North Street as that's where my house was.....with Ivy Terrace backing on to it. When I mentioned the names I recalled (from about 55 years ago) I intentionally used only surnames as I could only remember some of the christian names, and didn't want to upset anyone I'd left out....so, being encouraged by your message to have a go....I remember your dad Neville, and Barbara....the back of their house was almost opposite the front of ours (there's a photo somewhere here or with my brother John, of Barbara wearing a woolly hat standing by our house....I'm sorry to hear of her death)....I remember Barry Broughton too....I think there were three Bracewell girls, Sylvia and Dorothy, Margaret comes to mind but maybe not.....there was a Margaret Aldersley who lived a little beyond the top end of James Street. Michael Peckover lived in the house at the bottom end of Ivy Terrace.....next to my Sunday School. Peter Wright lived in the same row of houses as me in North Street. Our family were particularly friendly with the Warrington family (rather than Waddington....who were not in Ivy Terrace in my time - but there's a bit of a story attached to that...)

Sam and Reenie Warrington with their children Mervyn and Graham lived in Ivy Terrace and we were all good friends.....my mother and Reenie used to work alternate days at one of the Mills, and us kids would be looked after by whichever one of them wasn't working. Back around 1974 my wife, son and I were in Barlick for a week or so staying with my cousin Lesley and her family. One night my wife and myself decided to call in on the Warringtons....for the first time (for me) in 20 years! It was dark and raining heavily as I pulled up at the back of Ivy Terrace...I said "I think this is the house" went up and knocked on the door. A young man answered and, realising that he was not Sam, Mervyn or Graham I told him that I was looking for the Warrington household. He said "my name's Waddington the Warringtons are next door". I later found out that he was John Waddington and that he and I are related....his grandmother Elsie Pickering was my great-aunt, and my grandmother Hilda Green was his great-aunt....we share a great-grandmother Mary Harker who used to have a shop in Barlick...I think it was somewhere between Manchester Road and Park Road. I have a photo of John when he was about two years old, being held by 'grandma' Harker.... his mother Mary and her mother Elsie are also in the photo. If anyone reading this knows John Waddington, ask him if he remembers that rainy night when this chap called at his house looking for the Warringtons...and let him know that it was me, his second cousin Pete Harrison....

Pete

Dorothy Bracewell (Wilkins) used to have the Greyhound Pub before the newsagents, her and Ken have one son named Stewart, her sister Sylvia is married to Raymond Rance and was one of my teachers at Church School, she has 3 daughters and now lives in the Clitheroe area (she used to live up Folly Lane).

Ringo.....if you meant that you might take a trip up North Street for some photos to put on the site.....thanks a lot, that would be very much appreciated.  I'm compiling what I refer to as a family data base - rather than a family tree - using software which permits photographs to be associated with the folk recorded.

If it's not too much of a cheek to ask, it would be great if you could kindly take one from the corner of number 10 North Street and include the fronts of those houses.....I have a feeling that the entrance to the back of that row is no longer generally accessible.  Hey, whatever you come up with will be great.....and I've noticed that some of your pics on the site are helpfully pretty big....thanks again.

By the way, I'm sure it's 'a piece of cake' uploading photographs to the site....but I guess I must be one of them there technophobes.  I think I might need 'taking be the hand and walking through'......any chance - please!

Pete

Pete, I sometimes have a bit of a glitch uploading but have found that if you go to the photo directory and use the 'submit pic' command from the sidebox it works every time if size is right.  I usually aim for >300 kb, 5" maximum dimension on one side at 72dpi.  It gives a nice size and a good quality pic if anyone cuts and pastes.

Stan...the area of the site I had trouble uploading a photo to is 'My Profile' where there doesn't appear to be an option to send a mug-shot directly from my hard drive, as there is under 'Photos'....'Submit Picture'.  It's the reference to a URL that throws me....

First of all submit the picture to the site then copy and paste the pictures URL into your profile.Only thing is make sure the picture name doesn't have a space in it as it causes problems( so Doc informs me)

I think quite a lot of people get foxed by this.  Once you have cracked it, putting pics on the site or in profiles and responses is a gas but perhaps not as clear to new users.  The crucial thing to recognise is that there is only one way to get pics on to the site and that is through a submit pic command.  The URL asked for in that process is the identification of the file on the uploader's hard drive.  Once on the site, the pic is assigned an OGFB URL and this is the one to use for pasting the pic in responses or a profile.  Easiest way to get this site URL is to open the pic up and copy and paste the URL that is shown under the pic when it is displayed.  Hope that helps.

If anybody can't be bothered doing all this if they just email the picture to Doc Stanley or me, we will get the pictures on the site for you.

You're very patient gentlemen......however, though I have successfully (with your assistance) submitted one or two photos which appear together with their URLs, when I attempt to use one of them in 'Edit Profile' by pasting it's URL in the appropriate box, the photo doesn't appear in my profile....probably not a bad thing!   I have  noticed that the box doesn't show the last few characters of the URL I have pasted.....could it be that it's too long for this function?
