Well folks, we are now running the database on Microsoft SQL server, which was one of the main reasons why we upgraded to our new hosting package. Microsoft SQL Server is a more robust and well suited relational database product than the old Microsoft Access. It will stand us in good stead for the future growth of OGFB.

The poor old Microsoft Access database which as served us well for the past 4 years was creaking at the seams, with a database size of over 200Mb and getting hit with well over 10,000 page views a day was a big ask.

Microsoft SQL server is new territory for me, I am having to learn as I go, it's a lot more complicated than the old MSAccess, but I'm getting there. After 4 attempts tonight or should I say early this morning, I finally managed to transfer the old database across without loosing any of the valuable information. (I Hope)

I am having to test the site in real-time, so if you come across any weird error messages, please cut & paste them into this topic so that I can keep track of them and deal with them as they occur.

Now that the information is finally across into the new database all that needs to be done now is to fine tune the Microsoft SQL server application to maximise its performance, in particularly the building of the indexes for what is called "Full Text Indexing", once this is completed then the site's search facility will be FAST, what typically took say 30 seconds to search for in the old days will now take under a second to accomplish. Not only will the site & forum search facilities speed up but the site's speed in general will increase.

I will keep you all informed of my progress has and when I accomplish these bits and pieces.

Right then, it's time to get back to the chapter on "Full Text Indexing" a light read at this time of day Confused

Well He helped me one time before when i was having a problem with the Arcade news not working on my front page, turns out it was some java scripting i had in my footer, any way he has his hands full having a life and keeping this site running smooth, i really like what i see here, i see lots of his coding work all over the site and i know it did not come the way i see it so i know he has done a lot of extra work here.
i would not rush him for nothing in the world, i still have some coding that has to be done and some that i will need help with, the only problem i see is finding the people out there that has the same things i have and hope they will help.

There is a long term plan to abandon Skyportal and migrate the site to something a little more mainstream (I think Drupal was mentioned) which is what the 'friction' is about.  Numerous long term problems with Macs and smartphones as well as the now defunct state of the portal software. We could get away with a smaller hosting package going to php as well.

Just so you know whats going on.

Yes i have tried Drupal and several others and i have used SP and MaxWeb
both started with MW and then went tp SP i have hade other sites running and just cant seem to find one that can or that i am will to use to replace my SP,
as most people that have SP they have invested time and money in to keeping there site going, i will do my best to keep my SP that i paid for and the Mod's that i paid for going as long as i can.

Just one small point, it isn't friction, just me performing my role as burr under the saddle. Doc understands that, we've talked about it many a time. I think he still likes me......

The last time I spoke to Doc the most likely solution is the one other Drupal users have opted for which is to abandon trying to integrate the database in the new platform but put in a link to the archive. All the bot generated searches will still work. My view is that Doc is tryng to achieve perfection and he doesn't like to be beaten. I think there comes a point when the return of the investment of time isn't good enough. I favour the link solution and have told Doc that. But, it's his site and in the end he'll do what he thinks is best. All I can do is nag.......

Well my self i still love the way the SP software works, i don't have no where the content on my site.
But i would like to keep it the way i have it.

Also Just to give Doc and any one else an update i have gone live with the site on MSSQL.
I have sorted most of the bugs that i found before going live,
This is what i have been doing for the last week and a half, i know i have i bug and its the Arcade news not working on my front page, I had this problem before and it was a java script causing a clash in his code i guess.
Any way the site is running and all seems well for now, i would still like to here and maybe see the way Doc got past the code changes to get the Arcade working to see if my way is now causing the Arcade news not working on my front page,
Thanks for letting me share in this great place and i hope to continue to share and learn from here,
P.S Doc if you want me to post my fixes for the Arcade let me know, The VAL was just deleted and that was i am sure not the proper way, After resolving the MID issue deleting the VAL was it the Arcade is working, im off now to see if i can beet any scores and make sure it updates the counts. so Thanks again and ill post more later.
