The topic is developing well, i was born and reared next door to a farm and i find the smells, sounds, and sights quite comforting, but my wife born in a town detests the smell of spreading manure, silage etc. we have donkeys, chickens roosters, dogs & cats , when we moved here the nearest neighbours were in the grave yard, now during the "Celtic Tiger" houses were built and people from the city moved in, so far no complaints, but light mornings do get the cocks crowing, i don't hear them but apparently the neighbours do !

I might have mentioned this before.....We have a pig unit on the other side of the lane , with upwards of 1000 pigs in it . It can get a bit ripe when the wind is coming our way , but it is by no means unpleasant...
I love the smell of the cattle when they are in the field above our garden.
When I go back to Derby from time to time , the air always seems "foul" for the first day or so.....My favourite place to "breath" is Port Isaac /Port Gaverne .....oh , and outside the bakers in Wadebridge !

Nowt worse than incomer NIMBYs who don't understand agricultural economy and practices. Did I read somewhere that we have passed the point where over 50% of the world population now lives in cities? Divorced from the land, how can they understand?
The summer weather has brought out some truly dreadful shorts from the bottom of the wardrobe...... Have they no shame?

There are dedicated spots on the London Underground for buskers to set up shop and perform, so it's not illegal per se. Quite what happens if folk set up outside of these areas I don't know; I imagine a rather relaxed approach is taken. Covent Garden of course has long been the haunt of street entertainment - a better term this, as it includes street theatre, magic, acrobatics, comedy, anything really. Eddy Izzard 'learnt' his trade on the street around Covent Garden. He's not alone. You often get operatic performance there, in the basement of the old market hall in particular. The South Bank too is now a hot-bed of street entertainment. But it's not just London. Street entertainment occurs all over, and has done for centuries.
I actually think all this adds to the vibrancy of life in this country. Personally, I've seen some fantastic stuff on the streets (and some not so good, but hey ho). Long may it continue.

Sheep St, in Skipton is a good place to see buskers. A drive through the local countryside is a good way to see the scale of conversion from farmhouse to high des, res, dwellings, quite often with added properties making them into Hamlets for the well off. I haven't heard of any legal action around here yet, but it will probably happen at some future date. The location of BTs call centre may have changed, but I imagine the voices at the other end will not.

Just had a yelping, jumping screaming Daniel who has just logged on to the results site and got his first year results in engineering at Liverpool University. Overall First Class which means he can go on next year to specialise in avionics. A happy young man with a very proud dad. Nolic

Brilliant news Colin; congratulations Daniel and thanks for proving there are still great British engineers in the making regardless of the constraints on funding science and engineering.
Re the call centre moving from India to Burnley. The recession has been so bad in the USA (much worse than here for house repossesions etc) that US companies are moving their call centre ops back to the homeland.

I am very pleased for you and your Son Nolic, this country needs more good "Engineers", avionics, now there's something to get ones teeth into. Not quite so happy news is that one of our Soldiers has "Gone missing" in Helmand province, this provokes all manner of unpleasant possibilities, the taliban claim that they had him, but unable to control him, he was executed. It is hard to imagine what his family are going through, as some of us appreciate just what medieval barbaric bastards these beings are. I have never been comfortable with the idea of young Women serving in conditions where this is always a possibility, thankfully this is not the current case. We have a few members, who as parents, have to live with the knowledge that their young people are in constant danger, one has a Son who has either just returned to Afghanistan or will shortly be doing so, he will know what I am talking about. Its bad enough being in deep foo foo when you are with friends, if on your own, well try to imagine it! What really gets to me is the certain knowledge that we have in our midst those who will be celebrating this young Mans predicament. Tomorrow, they will just go about their business, no remorse, no sorrow, just some kind of demonic satisfaction!!

Latest reports suggest that the soldier has been found, but nothing more specific.

Not a good outcome to this Peter, latest news is that the soldier has been found dead with gunshot wounds, Taliban have claimed responsibility but this has not been confirmed. A number of news agencies are now carrying the story:
Guardian Latest
Investigations underway into circumstances but no good news to be had here no matter how he died.

The News of the World hacking case comes up again. This time because of the allegation that Mulcare and others hacked Milly Dowler's telephone and deleted messages to make sure there was room for more 'news' thus making the police think she was still alive. How long before the repercussions reach the top? Some MPs calling for a judicial review because the police had this evidence but sat on it. Too many unanswered questions. Amazing that nobody knew what was going on. As if the Dowler family haven't suffered enough.
