Why is it - people who are at home all week decide to cut their lawns on Sunday afternoon/evening? Relaxing in the garden today - neighbours decide to cut their lawn with noisy lawn mowers. I know the people who work are limited but there should be a law against spoiling the peace - there seem to be laws agaist everything else

I don't think there is anyone so inconsiderate in our street.
I know my sister has neighbours who mow late in the evening. Just after she has put the kids to bed.

I'd say it's about 2pm. Not too early, not too late. Did I say that none of my neighbours were so inconsiderate? Just after I posted that message, I heard a mower at the bottom of the street!

The worst lawn-mowing experience I had was when I was house-sitting for Martha in Northfield, Minnesota. The houses in the area were large and had big lawns. The bloke next door used to mow his lawn about twice a week with a very old petrol mower that was very noisy and burned a lot of oil. Trouble was he had poor health and was a lousy worker and it took him about three hours to do the job, (with frequent stops). I can tell you that this completely ruined two days of the week.....

I wouldn't dream of mowing my lawn before noon at the weekend - mainly because I like a bit of a lie-in myself, especially after burning the midnight oil the night before but also because I like to think I'm considerate towards the neighbours. I wish some of them reciprocated - we're now entering the season of foul-smelling burnt BBQ offerings accompanied by tasteless (in my opinion!) and very loud music.

I think weekdays in any time of day (not night) or Saturdays if you work. The people round here are mostly retired so have all the week to do it - but it seems some have rituals and do it at exactly the same time each week

I think with some people (especially the retired ones), like to stick to routine, ie when they worked they mowed on the weekend, and continue to do so. My daughters grandparents are in their 80's, and would you believe it....they still do their grocery shopping on a Saturday morning....?? Crazy.

Febby is a creature of very exacting habits. He mows the lawn every Saturday morning at 11 a.m. (I have tried to tell him.....) The only thing that stops him is rain. Mind you, he does use an electric mower, and they aren't as loud.....but the leaf sucker/blower thing even has me slamming the doors on him.

From your moth to God's ear H!!!! The smell of burning meat on the patio and the gentle hum of the Black and Decker..... Why don't the English learn how to barbeque properly! It isn't rocket science and you don't get smoke.

My, er, moth is also quite annoyed (nay, seething) at a neighbour's burglar alarm that's been chirruping loudly for at least 5 hours today. I've had to close the window which means I'm overheating because it's a warm day, and I tried earplugs but somehow I can't work on my keyboard if I can't hear the keys tapping (weird or what?) I thought by law an alarm had to stop within 20 minutes? The incessant sound is driving me nuts. I'm not risking the wrath of an overstretched police force by calling them out to what's quite probably a faulty system. Grrrrrrr!

I believe it is 20 minutes. I would call the constabulary (not 999) as a matter of course, it could be a burglar.........
