I thought Cameron was living dangerously yesterday when he told Angela Eagle to "Calm down dear". Sexist patronising is bad manners and not productive.
I note that the estimates for the two new aircraft carriers are soaring. What interested me was the reason/excuse given for the latest estimate that it was caused by revisions in the design of one of the carriers 'to accept variants of the European Fighter'. Does this mean that operating jointly with the French forces is still a policy?

Angela Eagle was one of the shortlisted candidates for Pendle when we were selecting our Parliamentary Candidate which Gordon ultimately won. I had a number of conversations with her through the selecton process. A very competent orator in a similar vein to GP, straight talking and always to the point.
I too thought that Camerons glib remark maybe should belong in our Gumption Trap thread. He probably would not get the point though!

How was the comment sexist? Did he not make the same comment to Milliband a short while ago, without any outcry.

There is a huge difference but as always, the context and tone matters a lot.
I admit to being one of those wimmin that if, during a heated conversation with either a male or a female, they use "calm down dear", I take it that they feel they are loosing the argument and are resorting to cheap jibes and put downs to try and regain some form of control.
Calm down is fine - just adding the dear does tend to move it into another playing field.

Kev and Peter, you seem to have missed the woman's point of view. No matter what the semantics many women object to being called 'dear' as the lady herself did,their reason is that they regard it as sexist and demeaning their opinion. That's why the remark caused so much comment. The fact that Cameron used it seems to show that he doesn't recognise the women's point of view and what is worse in the Parliamentary context, the damage it did to the point he was trying to defend.
Ted, Glad you're pleased. Have you seen the Private Eye piece on the NHS reforms? They appear to be the only source for the terrible reality of the PFI figures at the moment and point out that this ridiculous and uneconomic drain on health spending is a far bigger factor in the depth of the real cuts than even we forecast. Guess who carries the can in terms of the resultant cuts under GP management of the budget?
Funny isn't it that when the Tories were in opposition they quite rightly attacked Godron and New Labour for their off-balance sheet spending but now they are running the budget they are doing the same thing by approving new PFI deals even though they promised in their manifesto that they wouldn't.
They tell us that the wedding isn't a 'State Occasion' but the Foreign Office interferes with the guest list. Apart from the petty exclusion of Godron and Tone, Syria is off the list and North Korea on. Hard to weigh that one up!

The Natonal Audit Office has finally come off the fence and seems to be encouraging no more but with around 700 PFI projects already with us, which, they say, will cost the taxpayer £7.9 billion this year alone they've left it a bit late. A Lib Dem peer, Lord Oakeshoft, alleges that they will be a millstone around taxpayers necks for most of our lifelines. As we have said so often, why on earth couldn't the.so called consultants and advisors have put their foot down and said `no more' years ago??? I'm afraid those wizards are are very much lacking in a bit of ordinary common sense and are getting their money under false pretences. Sack the lot and tune in to `On Guy'.

Why did Cameron respond like he did ?? because the silly MP was shouting a load of nonsense at him. touche would seem to fit.
With regard to the guest list for the wedding
Blair was responsible for the Royal Yatch.
Brown for not putting the money into Buckingham Palace to carry out repairs.
Can see why they didn't get an invite, Oh and Cherie saying she wouldn't curtsey to the Queen, so they wouldn't have been on my guest list either !!

My considered opinion is that , once again, this demonstrates a negative and pugnatious attitude .
Your premise that , universally , discussion threads descend into acrimony , and that this is acceptable , is something that I find distressing. It also reminds me of the bad driver , who never has an accident , but leaves behind a wake of destruction. Shame on you!
As this IS the "Politics thread" , I feel that we can "discuss" this issue , without fear of your nonsense infecting (and I use that term advisedly) more gentle areas of the site.
You may have noticed ,in recent days, that I am by no means alone in this view....
.....Or has it been "water off a duck's back" , as usual ?.
PS Be aware that ,in future , that I shall always reply to your responses "with quotes" , thus preventing your "less than gentlemanly" habit of deleting ....
I would strongly advise others to do the same in future .
