Questions about this subject keep cropping up amid closely related topics, so I thought it may be a good idea to expand on the subject. I will not go on about my qualifications to discuss Canal Boats so lets just give it a go and see what transpires.

quote:
"castles and roses"

Er, no, don't think so. I've tried to like them, thinking I ought to like them, being all traditional and stuff, but no - too fussy for me.

And yes, Thomo - our engine room will be the cleanest on the cut. One thing we do very well is "clean". The mechanical and engineery stuff will come later.

One thing that's emerged is the boat's name. It's officially called Helen's Drum but we want to change it so's not to be mistaken for hirers (Pah! Amateurs! )

First off we thought "Bernulf" but went off that and considered "Rosa Calluna". But we both - and it's no lie, this - independently starting calling it "Big Bertha" to ourselves and were gobsmacked to find the other one was doing the same.

In the same way that a puppy or kitten often suggests its own name, our boat just seems like a Big Bertha to us (WWI gun notwithstanding - it's more akin to my Great Auntie Bertha/Les Dawson lookalike)

What do folks think - is it naff or OK? There are some well daft names on the cut so it wouldn't be too out of place.Go to Top of Page

"Dicke Berta" nothing naff about it at all, unless of course you were on the recieving end. Its a bit like who wants to be a millionaire, Final descision? and from a signwriting point of view, no "S"s, How about a small painting of the original instead of roses and castles?.

Eyup Heather,  just got back from the Blackpool jaunt (via a quickie int' Anchor). Enjoyed the sail yesterday, wen is most jealous she couldn't make it,  a very enjoyable couple of hours.     I hope me and Thomo didn't blind you with science, all the things we spoke about regarding boats will become second nature to you very quickly.

I've already got a few hand picked volunteers for the big sail up to Barlick, Tommy  included, when it all comes together we'll soon get Helens Drum back up here.

Nolic, Wen sends her regards....you should have seen her last night, took the dance floor by storm...she's certainly a little quieter today.

Andy.

I have finally caught up with this topic. (Don't ask.....it has been a busy month or two for us and unfortunately I only have one pair of hands).

Ever so pleased for you Cally and Elaine.

Have you got your internet sorted for the boat? When we recently moved we went wireless (no land line) because we knew we would purchase the Campervan and we still wanted internet connection. It works really well.....though a tad more expensive than a phone line. We can't have you losing touch!

I am just imagining all of the stuff you must have had to part with due to your change of lifestyle. Goodness me.....such a massive change of focus.

So when do you move in?

Something has just swallowed my last response, have we got Gremlins? No! then I repeat, I did not have eggcups, I clicked Post new reply, nowt appened, again, still nowt, and again, finally shut down IT conn in disgust, Hub fault. Right "Dicke Berta" (Fat Bertha) as in gun manufacturers missus Bertha Krupp, closer transmogrification is thus "Grosse Berta".

Of course....E is going to have to give up garage sales and car boot sales. There will be no space for junk! (the withdrawals will eventually settle)

Cally, I was just posting a reply to Ria offering my services against her balloon problem and it reminded me to give you a little friendly advice about fisherman on the canal.

Contrary to popular belief most anglers have no problem with canal boats passing through their swim - a cheery good day and all that - providing the boat sticks to the channel and to the 4 mile per hour  or less. After all the boats are on the cut most of the year and the fish are obviously used to them. At times they provide a definite service by stirring the swim up a bit and geting the fish feeding.

Now most boaters get a pleasant "Good Morning etc " off me but those that approach like they are pulling a water skier behind them and spring cleaning the towpath with their wash get something they don't bargain for.

If the bu**ers dont slow down when asked politely they get a catapult pouch full of maggots aimed for an open window (or porthole) or to shower whoever is steering at the back.  Most of these idiots are on hire boats and presumably soon learn their lesson. Strangely enough one or two have threatened, from the safety of the boat, to encourage me to have a swim but when invited to try tend not to follow this up for some strange reason.

So Cally and all the other Cutters spare a thought for the nice person sat on the bank enjoying their piscatorial pursuits and drive past them slowly and carefully.....or you might end up with a cabin full of blue bottles. Nolic

As an angler myself, mainly fishing the cut when the mood takes me, I would endorse everything that Nolic says. Boats are fine if they stick to the speed limit and can enhance a "dead" swim. Some boaters do take a liberty or two though. I have experienced a hire boat user tying up with the back end of his boat no more than 2ft from my keep net. I was not fishing in the confines of recognised moorings or anything like that , lots of space at either side, way out past Harrisons Bridge, no amount of gentle suggestion afforded a move. Sheer bloody mindedness!
Not being an antagonistic kind of person I continued fishing the spot I had chosen at the crack of dawn 6 hours before. The occupants left the boat on their bikes cycling back towards the Keys at Marton, I suppose for lunch. I had only ever planned to fish until lunchtime so I packed up. The swim was now dead anyway. I normaly dispose of the remains of my maggots and casters in the field but not this time. Guess where they took up residence?

Good to hear that you both are cheery and tolerant. We won't be going faster than the speed limit and as Travis suggested to us, as long as we aren't creating a wash on the sides then we should be OK.

I wish I could believe all anglers are like Nolly and Panny, but my experience as a cyclist indicates that a fair number (not all!) are real grumpy gits. Anyone would think that the cut had been dug just for their fishing pleasure.

I don't suppose it would be much use pointing out to them that without boats there wouldn't be any canals, and that their licence fee is rather less than that paid by boaters.

However, I do take your point about the inexperienced, insensitive or selfish boaters, who give other boaters a bad name, just as the grumpy anglers do likewise.

The canal mags and forums are awash with tales of woe about anglers, and I'm sure the fishing mags and forums say the same about boaters.

In this, as in all other walks of life, it's down to showing respect for other people.Go to Top of Page
