Belle it is is the correct place I agree it is a fact, what can be debated from it is open to question !!!
With politics you can put a view in answer to someone elses view, it is debate to a certain extent. It is when What Caught my Attention is presented in such a way as it appears fact, or a person is in agreement with it that leads on to the bickering. Being amongst bickeres I know.

Of course it was the right place, I have been advocating (but  ignored) for some time to have a "political" topic to keep all the arguments in one place and leave this topic in compliance withthe heading.

Belle, I missed your post on the Ripon earth tremor, I heard the report on R4. We're lucky in this country, we have tremors but no really serious events.

Tiz, I've been watching the opportunist pricing of heating fuel and know of at least one retired couple up in Teesdale whose retirement home is too expensive to heat and the market value has plummeted for that reason. Trapped in a house they can't afford to heat.

You've raised a knotty problem in discussion about the title of the topic. In case you've forgotten I tried to remedy this over two years ago by starting the topic 'Speaker's Corner'. I've just gone back to find it but the original post has gone AWOL, only the continuation is left. I've brought it back to the front. I started Speakers Corner because not everyone is interested in politics and the idea was to have a topic where anyone who wanted to raise the matter could participate and others could ignore it. Unfortunately it never caught on.

There is a secondary but very important problem for the moderators. We all know that the one thing that would enrage everyone is any form of censorship and none of us wants that. Apart from anything else, none of us (moderators) is arrogant enough to believe that our view is more valid than anyone else's. My personal view is that once censorship is seen as allowable the site is damaged.

Topics develop a life of their own and the general tone is set by the members who post. The only solution I can suggest is that anyone who wants to raise a political point should do it on 'Speaker's Corner'. I shall do that from now on. There is of course another criterion we could all bear in mind. Don't rise to the bait of argument for the sake of argument. I've had PMs about this and the general opinion is that this would help.

It will be interesting to see if self-discipline will solve the problem. It goes without saying that this is only a personal decision, I can't and won't impose my views on a solution on anyone else. If any of you have any alternative ideas please speak up, all I can do is give my own opinion. Love to you all, S.

Speakers Corner sounds fine to me Stanley. The first item on the News each day is normally Politics it is what affects us all one way or another. Some people want to debate it others don't,we have our difference of opinion, but I respect that even though I try to shoot it down like you do to mine !!! That's no different to down the Pub which could be the name of the Political Topic. One thing I would say I feel censorship/moderation has been pretty fair. Once something has been said down the Pub it's forgotten, once in Print on Here it is for Always.

Thanks for that Frank. As you know there have been some ugly accusations about the moderator's role which to be honest are upsetting. All we try to do (and there is more than just me) is to defuse anything that can damage the site. In the end it's the members who control the direction. One thing that pleases me is that a debate on direction like this one produces such a good response. Clear evidence that people value the site and are prepared to work for it.

Why can't I get back my original choice of Frosty Sky skin ...... For Some reason it was changed (not my doing) to White Xmas just before Christmas but the change has not been reversed, nor can I select Frosty Sky from the options list ...... Funny thing is Frosty Sky appears in the skin changer window.

Above is what I posted last year on the same subject.

I can change the skin to any of the options EXCEPT Frosty Sky.

Gearce, it's at your end. I've just selected Frosty Sky and it works.

I'm enjoying the current R4 programmes on the King James' Bible. I have no objection to anyone using a different version but I was raised with the KJB and love the language. It always jars with me when I hear someone using a modern version of one of the great quotations. Perhaps I really am an Old Fart!

It was Doc wot christened me....  Doesn't bother me at all. I remember sitting through a two and a half hour chrsitening service for Laura, one of my granchildren. It was so boring I read the whole of the Song of Solomon and Revelation. Passed the time on nicely. (Janet asked me at one point what I was reading and when I said erotic poetry she didn't believe me.)

Come to think, I wonder how they edited that for the New English Bible.....

Has anyone any thoughts on what is making hundreds of bird fall from the sky and fishes from the sea In the USA?  (I agree with keeping politics off here which is why I and many others ignore this topic mostly)

Haven't heard about the fish and the birds Moh, will go and look it up.
Stanley, there's a wonderful part in the black comedy "Keeping Mum" where Rowan Atkinson who plays the vicar is trying to get his marriage back on track and the song of solomon figures largely. Will see if I can find a link for you.

Re problems with Xmas and Frosty Sky skins. I've noticed that if you are logged in and choose Frosty, then it stays put.   If however you are logged out then whatever you choose, it will revert to the Xmas skin next time you log in.
I hope this is helpful.

I reckon it is gravity doing it to the birds and anti-gravity doing the fish.

I listened to a news item on this and from what I can make out everybody is baffled but suspecting some form of pollution. It reminded me of when I was in charge of the sewage plant at West Marton and an environmental health inspector gave me a long lecture about milk products being poison to fish. I agreed with him but annoyed him by telling him that anglers regularly called in at at the dairy for a bottle of wey from the cheese vats. They said it was magic for making bait balls for competion fishing. I suppose it all depends on the quantity.

Just one final point
I feel that I have been censored because of my political views, you only need look at the number of posts that have been batted forward by a few of us to know we care about what goes on around us. Sometimes it can resemble a bear pit  look at PMQs some day to see that.
Politics are what influence almost every aspect of your/our daily life, you supress discussion at your peril.
With regards to the Earthquake post I saw it and I could not think how to acknowledge it. An earthquake is what it is, it caused no casualties or structual damage so I couldn't comment !!! That does not say it was ignored.
