One of the wonderful things about our country is the diversity of place names,some of which, the origins are quite vague. Barnoldswick is where most of us are,, twelve letters, none repeated, it was at one time registered as the longest place name as such. Stixwold, Tumby Woodside, Piddletrenthide, Affpuddle, the list is endless. One of my favourites is "Nemphnet Thrubwell sounds like a hangover" and before I snuff it , I want to have a look. But "Wooton Basset", we surely have all heard of. A beautiful English town which has been transformed into a place of honouring the sadness of conflict. Few weeks go by without the sight of its people paying their respects to the young men and women of this country passing through, now joined by members of the families of the fallen. The sight of the Globemaster Aircraft arirving at RAF Lyneham and discharging their solemn cargoes, the slow and dignified progress through this lovely place. I like a "Wet" and I am going to make sure that I have one in the "Cross Keys" in Wooton Basset, and thank the landlady and all present for what they have done and continue to do. They have been given an award in the past week and they deserve it. So my good wishes this Christmas go to the people of "Wooton Basset". Bless you all, have a good Christmas and may your welcome duties soon be discharged.

Very good that, still giggling. I have just read elsewhere something service oriented that is certainly not funny at all. A woman recruited in the Carribean is trying to sue for sexual discrimination after being chucked out of the Army. When she joined she already had a child and was warned at the time that the Army must come first and that she would have to organise her life around service needs. Three times she has been awol due to this child. The Army should never have taken her on so they are in part to blame, on the other hand she should have had more sense and stayed home. On a similar vein the soldier who refused to go back to Afganistan and took his protest to the streets who is now a "guest" at Colchester is protesting about his treatment there I seem to recall that when you "sign up" having been given the chance to think about it, you comit yourself to whatever may come your way, good or bad. Not long ago it was suggested that the forces should have a union to bring them into line with civvy st. Can you imagine how this would have turned out had it gone ahead. I sincerely hope that your sons testicles return safely with him firmly attached. Best wishes, Thomo, RN Retd, but not regretted.

You could be right there Frank, this thread is not the place for it. Besides Barlick Grumblies, maybe a British grumblies, but I am trying to avoid sticking up another target to be shot at,, although I am getting used to it. How does an ex-service forum sound, that might sort the wheat from the chaff as it were.

Well done the RBL and the RNA along with the RMA and of course all the Guards Regiments and other Front Line Units who turned out in all weather to Honour the Homecoming of some Very Very Brave Men. The Local Council of Wootton Bassett deserve praise they also used to turn out to see the boys home.
I know a family whose son was repatriated through Wootton Basset and I know it made them feel proud when they looked around at all the people shedding a tear for their son. Royal Wootton Bassett sounds right .
3 Commando Brigade ( 45 Commando, 42 Commando and ASGRM ) along with1 Rifles the Mercians fly out this week to replace the Air Assualt Brigade in Helmand. I just hope and pray that non of them need to be repatriated back home and no more families have to go through this.

Catty, I often see your postings as entertaining comment, even if a bit off the wall. Please don't stoop to the baser levels and join the ranks of the Britain Bashers who despite their discomfort at living here, are still, Here!!!

Frank/Thomo sounds like a great step. The Canadian equivalent of WB is the air base at Trenton, the corteges then travel along a main highway (401) now renamed "The Highway of Heroes" into Toronto ( about 150km). Signage along the highway features poppies with "Lest we forget" on all signs. Every overpass is crowded with people paying their respects.

Shame they give the name just as the air force camp there is about to close. I wonder if any future sons/daughters lost in conflict will get the smae welcome elsewhere. (I hope and pray there are no more to come home that way)

I am afraid I can find no form of Britain Bashing, as you call it, in what I wrote. I mentioned royal pets and the name of a town.

I am not accusing you of being a Britain Basher Catty, just hoping that you dont become one, there are more than enough here already. If I resorted to the kind of language that MrIshmael uses I am sure it wouldnt be tolerated on here.

Interestingly, the blogosphere is carrying quite a few comments from residents of the town and its environs who are little uneasy about this. Many in the town have been uneasy about the media circus that has built up around what was, for a long time, the simple human decency of a population that just happens to there paying its respect to the dead as they pass, outwith the media entourage and hangers on that have turned up. As any decent person would do if a hearse passed them in the street; I know if I see a hearse when I'm out I will slow down or stop, and lower my head (and doff my cap if I'm wearing it). I don't want a slap on the back for that. At best, the legality of some recent conflicts is dubious and I think there is something rather uncomfortable in now associating forever a place with such dubious events, however decent the townspeople have shown themselves to be. Townspeople it has to be said, who have never wanted any recognition at all.
It's interesting that the town's Crier has noted that as this is bestowed by the Queen and not the government, it would be disrespectful and ungrateful to turn it down. That's an ambiguous statement.
