I've been asked by a relative to help him with his research on the Rawsthorn(e) family of Widdop. He isn't comfortable using computers but recognises that much of the detail he needs will be found online.

Please can anyone point me in the right direction as I've never done this kind of thing before. What are the best websites to use? What is free and what has to be paid for? Has anyone got resources which I could use (and would be willing to pay a small consideration for)

Here's his brief to me:

=========================

Rawsthorn(e) Project

To trace thge burial records of a family of hillfarmers who were driven off their farm at Widdop when Halifax Corporation built the reservoir (c. 1890).

The family burials were at Blakedene non-conformist chapel, which has since been demolished.

The family moved to Hurstwood nr Burnley and there is a burial recorded about 40 years ago - Hurstwood Methodist Chapel.

Two brothers moved to Barcroft Hall, Cliviger, nr Burnley. The last descendent still lives nearby.

The story of this tough, independent family of hillfarmers is worth research and there are two initial questions:

1. Can Methodist burial ground records be used to trace the family tree?

2. Is the local Halifax newspaper digitised so that there can be online research into the news items about the construction of Widdop reservoir?

=========================

Any advice on how to tackle this project would be most appreciated - thanks.

There was a Dick Rawsthorne farming near Sawley in the late 30s, his son Richard was best man at my wedding in 65 and now I think lives at Tosside, his sister Kathleen Rawsthorne now Taylforth is I believe still in Barlick, another sister was called Doris.

The name Richard fits with the details I've been provided with. I shall follow this up.

Thanks to both you and Colin for the valuable  info - it's helped get me started on a subject which quite frankly I find rather daunting.

If I can help, all you have to do is ask, its time I dug out my old mate anyway. The family lived at 58 Rainhall Rd, next to what is now the chippie.

Thanks for your kind offer, Peter.

A quick call to my above relative has revealed that in fact this Richard lives in the Cliviger area so I think maybe it's another family. However, there may well be a distant connection and I shall look forward to discovering more details.

Sue is the lady with all the info about Widdop. There is a topic on the site called Widdop Reservoir.
I came across a chap called Rob Rawsthorne a few years ago when we lived in Scotland. He was a horse logger, and related to my neighbour, but I think his family came from somewhere in this area.

Thanks Sue - I would love to take you up on your offer. I don't expect owt fer nowt and I appreciate it will take time and effort. I will happily make a donation either to a charity of your choice or to your own research fund - I believe it can be very costly to access all the records etc.

Please let me know what you need to know from me - I'm very new to this lark and don't really know where to start. I'm willing to do a lot of legwork but the more I look into things, the more information is thrown up.

Do you think it would be wise to buy a book (there must surely be a volume called "Researching Burial Records In Non-conformist Chapels For Dummies"...) so that I can learn how to go about it? Can anyone recommend one?

I have full membership of Ancestry.com which means I can trace most things sat watching TV!!. Once you have names and death dates it is possible to contact cemetries direct, (but some charge) and they can tell you where people are buried. I will probably be necessary to send for a few death certificates which will cost money. No charge, for the research itself. I just love solving the problems.If it does create a cost I will let you know. I don't think Halifax paper is digitised. The Non conformist burials are probably listed at Preston Records Office, or Halifax records office you can email them to find out.

As for Barcroft Hall, you will laugh. I have a friend of  agood friend whose sone has jusr converted this to seperate dwellings. This builder knows the Rawstrone descendant and I believe he had the full famly tree, i can try and find out

These families seem to be on the Widdup farms back to 1861. I have been sent information back to the 1700s by another contact and I will check it out.
Now I have some names I will try to find some deaths and burials
