We can't keep the name Helen's Drum as Silsden will be calling their replacement boat by that monicker. We had toyed with 'Rosa Calluna' but felt it was a bit fey, complicated and a right mouthful. 'Big Bertha' failed the relatives' test...
As Frabjous Day is one of my fave sayings when I'm happy, and Jabberwocky is an off-the-wall poem so it matches our personalities, this is now likely to become the boat's name. We have to complete the registration form by Thursday.

Cally, whatever you finaly decide, you have to live with it ( I like Frabjous Day), does it matter what anyone else thinks of the name? I see plenty of boats on the cut with weird and wonderful names. FD is a conversation starter anyway.

... only 7 letters in Bernulf though!
The Bernulf connection goes back to the title of our CD and the song I wrote.
Also, although the style of our boat bears no resemblance to the original ones (ie Liverpool short boat) that worked the L&L, the tradition seems to have been a single word name. |

When we bought the boat off Silsden Boats it was called Helen's Drum, but they wanted to keep that name for its new replacement so we had to fill in a form for BW with the changeover details.
However, a boat is identified by its number, much like a VIN on a car, so I understand that we can change its name so long as BW can match it up with the registered number.
I'm sure Andy (Travis) will correct me if I'm wrong. |

Yep Cally, its the Index number that counts. Theres boats up here that may even be on their third or fourth name, the number stays the same.
When bought our first boat, a plastic cruiser from the top of Barrowford locks, we changed the name. Being new to the boating game we were gobsmacked when the regular boaters mentioned what was involved to avoid bad luck following a name change on a boat. It involved running round the gunnels naked at mid-night, anti-clockwise if I remember correctly.
Breath easy Cally, we were told all this in early April, very early.

That's where I've been going wrong! I was doing it clockwise. Explains why we've had so much bad luck lately. However, the marina has pleaded with me to stop because I'm frightening the ducks. |

Met Big Kev today, Heather brought him down to meet us at the Boat Rally at Skipton.
By 'eck....he's a big Lad!...Bally 'dwarfed me, and I aint no shringing violet.

It was a good boat show - much better than last year. It's on again tomorrow, folks - lots to see - can recommend it as an interesting day out, particularly the dutch barge that's so big it has a railway train on its roof...
Didn't get chance to take a look at Kennet (a Liverpool short boat as used when the canals were in their heyday) so might bob back again tomorrow. |

Sounds like a good show. I can't come as my ASBO conditions state that I am only allowed over the Manorial boundary if accompanied by my minder, Doc.

A new boat name?, you mentioned Bernulf to me yonks ago, remind us all from where the name comes.
And sailing without the help of Cap'n Travisty?.....I told you it was a doddle, well done. No I mean it... WELL DONE! Not many people have had the pleasure of sailing widebeam boats, they're all used to their softie little NBs. Trying to fit a boat the width of ours through some of our local bridgeholes does seem impossible sometimes but we can do it! Why? Coz I told so!
Hanbrake turns? Pah....easy peasy.
When Garstons' skipper comes up your level of competence we'll have a Rally, a WIDEBEAM Rally, for proper boats.

Oh we are, Ringo, we are. And the more so because of the setbacks - I feel a real sense of achievement. Yes it's been hard. Damned hard. Tears, I have to admit, have been shed.
I'm under no illusions that it will be, 'scuse the pun, plain sailing from now on but I know we can meet the challenges ahead, after overcoming the problems we've had so far. Thanks in no small part to the likes of the Travis crew and the inmates of Lower Park Marina who have helped and supported us above and beyond the call of duty. They may not walk on water, but they definitely float on water 
Travis: Bernulf? Allegedly the Saxon geezer who was mad/farsighted enough to stumble upon this part of the planet and decided to call it home - recorded later in the Domesday Book as Bernulfeswic - Bernulf's Gaff (or more academically, Bernulf's wick, ie place or dairy farm).
