I went up Letcliffe today in the sunshine with the birds singing and only a light breeze from the NW to spoil things so I decided you were right and it's probably about time we started to be optimistic. However..... have you seen the forecast for Easter?

Just got back from a couple of weeks in Ireland, testing the waterproofing of motorcycle clothing (and ignition systems). A fortnight today, we were on the coast of Country Down when they had their wettest day in living memory, which happened to be the first day of a Vintage Motorbike Run! An interesting experience!
Real point of this post is that, both in Ireland and the UK this year, I have noticed a huge apparent reduction in insect life. You can't help but notice this as "insect strikes" on the crash-helmet visor are much less than normal years. Anyone else notice this? Doesn' t bode well for bird or plant life for next year.

Certainly those that know are concerned about the butterfly population, especially with respect to one or two specific species, cabbage white seems to be doing alright. Not eversomany butterflies on my budleas this year. I think that most insect life was in my bedroom last night, two moths, a big green thing with long back legs and a massive spider were all despatched out of my window.

At thirteen minutes past four this afternoon there was a brief, very watery, sighting of the sun. It hasn't been seen since......

And you will pay for it later today with thunderstorms and rain. I have noted the absence of butterflies. I mentioned it earlier in the year.
It's been a peculiar year for weather and the biggest effects I have noted are the frequency of winds out of the northern quarter and high humidity in the house. I note it has risen to 75% in the last few days. All my life I have associated this level of humidity with hot muggy weather which usually ended in a thunderstorm. I get the feeling that this year the only thing which will bring it down is cold weather. I've always taken notice of physical things that give clues. In the very hot summer of 1972(?) I knew it was hotter than since 1920 in the mill because the shafting expanded and rubbed on the walls in places it had never touched before. This morning I got fed up of a door in the house rubbing on the skirting board so I ground a bit off it. It had expanded with the humidity and taking a fraction off it cured it. very strange weather and largely the fault of the shift in the jet stream. I wonder what winter holds for us?
Another thing I have noted for a week now is that starlings are gathering in flocks.....

Mist came down here at about 6am comrade...... It's still with us, if it was cooler you'd say it was definitely Autumnal.

Not nice here today, cold and overcast with a few showers (just closed up and put the heater on - 5.15pm - couldn't stand it anymore). Spring starts for us tomorrow and they reckon we'll get plenty of rain to start the season off.

I can agree with Stanley's clue about the sticking door. We have a door that is fine most of the time but sticks slightly now and then. But for the last week or so it has been jamming badly and needs a hefty push to get it open.
As for insects, I recently saw a very small insect walking across my computer screen and tried to swot it. But I couldn't because it was behind the glass....yes, honestly. It later disappeared and hasn't been seen since. Now this raises interesting possibilities. It could have got in since I bought the screen. On the other hand, has it been living in there since before I bought it? If the latter then it might be a tropical insect from China or wherever the screen was made. Alternatively, it might have arrived as an attachment in an email message....

I recently had to have my front door shaved along the bottom. Due to lack of rain a while back it had become stuck. For a while there I thought of it as a good burglar deterent, but then I got sick of the hip and shoulder effort to open and close the door to get in an out of the house . It's all fixed now and back to normal.

Won't there be a draught Stanley when the door shrinks back?? Funny day today - warm but misty and feels very damp but not mizzling.

Like the joke Niloc! I'd say at a cursory glance that it was definitely not a pointer - of any kind.

Moh it was only a whisker and it's the door into the workshop which has a high tech £800 draught proof door on it. The shed is so well sealed that you can feel the difference when you open and close either door if the other is open.
We have some weather! It started raing gently at 14:00 and hasn't stopped since. It's a relief to see something happening! Glass falls gently as low declines, squally weather later in the week I think.
