Came up in conversation today about whether it should be spelled Barlick or Barlic.
Someone mentioned the food shop Barlic Bites and said wasn't it strange how they got away with spelling it wrong.
However, I have a press cutting from the Craven Herald of 1914 which spells the town's nickname without a K and many locals also spell it that way.
It's always been with a K for me, but if this turned out to be the modern spelling then I'd be happy to accept a non-K version.
Does anyone have any strong evidence for either way?

It seems odd to me that Bernulfesuuic got changed both to Barnoldswick and Barlick and each has survived down the centuries relatively intact. |

Quite ! .....Why is Secheveral ,similarly , pronounced Sackville ?...and locally , Launceston is always called Lanson ....it's the phonetic spelling of local pronunciation that is being discussed here , surely......

They do it to tric the publick into entering the shop and asking, then being seduced into buying their goodies. Is there one of those lit up, electrick signs over the shop saying Barlic bites? Is `bites' a plural noun or a warning verb?

It might be more enlightening to ask them if they think Barlick does bite..after all that's what they seem to be claiming!

Sorry! Have been busy doing some actual paying work, together with keying in the next installment of The Extraordinary Affair, an excerpt from which was kindly provided by Wendy to illustrate Barlick with a K useage in 1874.
In fairness, the C ending isn't just a Barlic Bites* phenomenon - as mentioned before I have a newspaper clipping from WWI with it spelled like that, but I need to establish whether that was a misprint or whether there are earlier examples.
* And to answer the question 'Is it a verb', the answer is Yes, but only if you oyn us... |

Just having a look through the on line library archives and note an article in the Northern Star of 1841 that Accrington is spelt Ackrington. Seems they were all at P's and Q's with their C's and K's. Nolik

Studied the menu at the new Indian Restaurant today.
Restaurant called BarlicK Raj Balti and for a starter you can get BarliC
King Prawn and BarliC special rice
