Questions about this subject keep cropping up amid closely related topics, so I thought it may be a good idea to expand on the subject. I will not go on about my qualifications to discuss Canal Boats so lets just give it a go and see what transpires.

Heather, whatever you do about your computer is going to cost money.  Have you had a look at the latest mini-generators?  They are tiny, so quiet you wouldn't believe it and if I were you I'd be thinking about having one for dedicated use on the computer.  If you cost it out and add the convenience I think you might find it is a viable option and once you get over the fact that you have to press a button on the generator before you can start work, I think you would like it.  Think a cube roughly one foot square.......

Thanks Stanley - yes we are considering a small genny. In fact, Travis has offered us the loan of his petrol Japanese one. If it does the job we'll get one of our own. We were considering solar panels and a wind gennie, but the cost outweighs the benefits in the short term.

Also, we need something like an old plastic beer crate to stand on, if anyone has one lying around that they don't want. Being a bit short in stature we would both benefit from being able to see where we're going while we're steering. Although canalboating is often referred to as 'a contact sport' I would prefer to avoid any unneccessary bumps! Go to Top of Page

You're right about the pay-back time on solar and wind power.  Have a look at this for an example of what is available; http://www.pump.co.uk/shop/Generators/SilentBabyDomestic/d24/sd79

They really are as close to silent as you can get.

Plastic beer crates go soft as you use them.  I have a purpose-made plastic footstool you can have if you call in.  Perfect for what you need, strong and skid-proof top.

PLANS for a £1million pound marina have been stepped up.

Bosses of Barden Mill, between Burnley and Brierfield, will discover whether the proposal for the 92-berth marina at the back of the store is approved by councillors at a meeting next month.

The 26-acre site, which takes in both Burnley and Pendle, would serve narrow boats from the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Councillors will now decide whether to give the marina the go ahead at planning meetings on December 4 and December 6. If approved, Barden Mill bosses are aiming to start work in the new year and aim for the project to be completed by August.

Plans for the site include places for narrow boats to moor, so users can stay overnight or lease a space for a year.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT.
I am sure you will all be pleased to know that I solved the problem of the Duck's Disease yesterday.  I have welded two extensions on the Hether legs and whilst she totters a bit when walking she can now see over the steering wheel thingy.  The fee was 4 railway books and I spent the afternoon reading them instead of going in the shed........

After weeks of uncertainty, it looks like the boat move is ON - possibly sooner than we anticipated.

Must dash - got a house to pack up.

Will post details later. Go to Top of Page

Good, but look after each other.  Don't try to do too much.  You will get there!

Have you thought about those steps for children to reach the loo, surely they would be a better bet than a crate..speaking as someone who once when through a plastic crate in bare feet, the pain of trying to extricate foot from plastic is enormous, so make sure you get something strudy!

The hardware shop, in Padiham, sells a plastic step. 4 legs and about 10 inches high (looks like the sort of thing you would use outside the door of a caravan) I think they were only a couple of quid......

Stanley's step seems to be fine - quite sturdy and non-slip. The proof of the pudding will be when we actually put it into use.

Ha! IF we ever put it into use, I should say. Just had a call from the solicitor to say that Mr Numpty (the one who's held everything up so far) is now saying he can't complete till the 19th. So that leaves a very tiny window on the 20th to move - all the solicitors are then shut till New Year.

I can't delay it till January because I'm away on business on the 2nd & 3rd, followed by two enormous and complex jobs which I couldn't possibly complete while juggling boxes and getting to grips with  boat steering.

What an expletive deleted flipping rollercoaster this has turned out to be.Go to Top of Page

Moving is a nightmare - when we moved we did not get the go-ahead until 2pm with everyone;s belongings in the removal vans and waiting.  Good luck with it Cal.
If the step is not OK (plastic is slippy when wet) - you csn get good sturdy metal ones with rubber on top from a caravan shop - even two stepped ones if you want to be higher.
