We have had a weekend away near Sedbergh, staying at Ash Hining Farm B&B. When some friends suggested that we join them for a walking weekend in that area, I remembered Ian's report on a stay in the Howgills, and we booked in at the same place. It is a great place to stay, and we were looked after extremely well by the owner, Jim, who entertained us, cooked magnificent breakfasts, "titivated" our rooms, and advised on walks and places to eat. On Saturday we set off up Winder and went on to Arrant Haw, but the rain just kept on coming and we couldnt see a thing through the cloud so we decided to head back down towards Sedbergh rather than carry on to The Calf. Lovely walking despite the conditions. On Sunday, after taking Jim's advice on a low level walk, we set off up the Dales Way alongside the Lune. We had only just started out along the riverbank when we saw a flash of blue as a kingfisher flew by. A first for all of us, and if the rest of the walk had been dire, we would have gone home happy. It was a lovely walk though, all the way up river to the ancient bridge at the Crook of Lune, where we crossed the river and, after getting a bit too close to the M6, headed back on a higher level via a quiet lane. We passed "Fox's Pulpit", a natural outcrop of rock where George Fox preached to 1000 people in 1652, following his revelation on Pendle. A great walking area, and a highly recommended place to stay. We found some good places to eat, but Jim and his 81 year old pal, Sid, who had walked the same route as us that day, beat us down to The Red Lion and had the last of the shoulder of lamb. The beef was good though.

Wendy, it sounds like you had a very good weekend and very glad that you enjoyed Ash Hining and Jim's company as much as we did. We have vowed to re-visit again in the future to walk some more of the Howgills.
Now, how about giving Home Farm a go at Stalling Busk. Another area to explore in and walk in the paths of my ancestors. Another B&B that I know would not let you down.
Glad you enjoyed your weekend Wendy, it's anice place to unwind. Were you treated to any of Jims doorstep sandwiches and a bit of cak for sustinance on your walk?

I think we have blown our holiday budget for the year Ian. Three nights B&B plus three delicious pub meals..... We didn't get the offer of sandwiches bu tthe incredible breakfasts kept us going all day. Jim was too busy washing and ironing for changeover day in the self catering cottages on Saturday. Never mind the tinkering and titivating in the B & B rooms. I have a feeling the relationship with Joyce my have broken down since you were there. She comes in to clean the cottages but has nothing to do with the B&B. Sid is a regular visitor who used to run over the fells, but at 81 he has slowed down a bit. Jim had him helping to hang out the washing so they had time to walk together. Both a joy to spend time with.

Sounds like an episode from a high class soap opera!

Just Cumbrian dialect Cally, now't to worry about. Was really good when I had a chunk along with the doorstep butties that Jim made for us.
