Tesco are considering opening a store in Barnoldswick.

They claim it will create 175 jobs and keep shoppers in the town, as well as saving local firm L&P Springs.

There are 2 exhibitions taking place this Friday and Saturday for people to gain more information.

Views, anyone?

Locally sourced goods - we are in an area famous for plums and greengages, yet they still stock plums from Spain and the USA even at the height of the season in the local area.  No cafe - maybe not now, but if they think it will work, then there soon will be . The top floor here is a Costa Coffee.
A great big steamroller is coming to town - make no mistake!    That said. on ballance I am a fan.

A great big roller, steam or otherwise is very useful if you are trying to create a level playing field. Produce from many overseas countries may be available all year round, but lacks the flavour of our own products. Salad items from Asda are mostly from Spain, those in Sainsburys are mostly from UK, the difference is in the eating. A young man from Simonstone near Padiham has shown some initiative and courage by starting a home delivery business supplying locally sourced foodstuffs, his delivery van is fast becoming a regular visitor to our part of town, a look at his website shows that his prices are also competitive, and I would prefer to see more of such enterprise than the takeover of town by takeaways, some of which I understand do phone orders with a little extra in a small bag, of the stuff that does not benefit the town at all, only the purveyor.

As it would be useful local information, perhaps you would share his website and phone details, Peter? I'd probably use his services.

Just been to the Teco exhibition.

Predictable responses to questions by pre-programmed personnel.

On the face of it, it doesn't look too bad. But history and real life examples indicate otherwise - ie the death knell for many local shops. I guess it depends on how resilient and resourceful they are.

For you Cally:-

http://www.localfoods2u.co.uk/

If the local shops are good ones, then they should not have a problem, if this doesn't happen, large numbers of people will still go out of town, local shops stand a better chance without this weekly exodus. And what about the possibility of a new store bringing in shoppers from out of town, Barlick is nearer to Earby, Gisburn and Thornton than other stores, the main shopping street in Earby is showing all the classic symptons of shopping migration. Look back at Barlick a few years ago, there was the Co-op with nine groceries and a butchers, Kings, Carrs, Redmans and a host of smaller outlets, all but vanished, Nine butchers, half a dozen bakeries, the demand is still there but the trade has gone elsewhere. The missing shops will not return as we knew them, and there are no replacements. People who have their own reasons for not wanting Tesco here, will not be obliged to use it, but the same would apply if it were any of the alternative store chains. Then take a look at Wellhouse Mill, if L&P move out it will become another rotting edifice, all that remains now is the shed, difficult and costly to maintain, we have our industrial heritage secured in Bancroft, we don't need another. Sooner or later the remaining sheds will become unviable to sustain and will either be replaced or removed, Wellhouse site has been given a chance of a future and this should not be dismissed on ethical grounds. Finally, Barlick is still growing and will no doubt continue to do so, sentimentality is fine, but can be impractical.

I've just got back after standing on the door for the 2 days of the exhibition.  Judging by the number of business cards I've given out , I reckon around 450-500 people came through the doors over the 2 days.  Good to see some of you there.

I have a few of Tesco's brochures if anyone wants one.  They have a postpaid tearout postcard to give your views should you desire.

I hope it goes well for you Pluggy, it was nice to see you there. I was just thinking about standing in Barlicks only greengrocers this morning whilst people ran to other shops to get change, listening to the steady drip, drip of water coming through the ceiling and into a plastic tray I dread to think of the state of the upstairs rooms, about just which shops may be affected, so which ones are they? lets have a list. It won't be the hairdressers, card and gift shops, beauty and nail shops, the pubs, the charity shops or the discount shops, florists, and sadly not the takeaways either, so lets have a list please, and with good reasons why! If Pluggy gave out cards to only half of those who had a look, where were the other 9,000 or so, dont care, or out of town, shopping?!!!

There was a firm of roof repairers on the roof of Chaudries last Sunday morning.  I don't remember which firm it was though so I can avoid them.........

Actually, Peter, I'm more or less in agreement with you. You've summed up the situation rather well, I think.

[Later] And I've just placed an order with those local delivery people. Prices seemed reasonable and I like the fact that you don't pay till they actually deliver the goods.

I agree basically with Peter but not about Chaudrie's. Not their fault they have a landlord who does nothing until he has to. Ghulam told me about the problems they have had. I do all my greengrocery shopping there and I think they are excellent.

He mentioned the name but I blanked it. Ask Ghulam.

Yes - I'll stick up for Chaudhry's too. Their produce is often fresher than the supermarkets. Less packaging too. And sometimes a lot cheaper. And you can often get things that aren't available in the Co-op, such as a huge bunch of fresh, unpackaged coriander.

The supermarkets don't sell fenugreek (methi) either. Chaudhry's do, essential for my "have to kill you if I tell you" curry sauce.

Nice selection of spices at the back of the shop as well. Lovely fresh pepper and they sell Lubna Basmati Rice, one of the few that are absolutely guaranteed Basmati by genetic tests.
