Questions about this subject keep cropping up amid closely related topics, so I thought it may be a good idea to expand on the subject. I will not go on about my qualifications to discuss Canal Boats so lets just give it a go and see what transpires.

Any chance of a copy of that? it would help a great deal. And Callunna, theres nowt wrong with WW. Somewhere I have a front cover of that depicting "Red Admiral" cruising in the Midlands. I will post it when I find it. Also "Anna" may not be the boat you spoke of. There used to be an unfinished one in an Nisson Hut type building attached to Merrit & Fryers top yard at Skipton, not far from the dry dock that was owned by Pennine Marine. Stanley may remember it as we used to pass it whilst working on the boat "Youth Reach" at that place.

Nice stuff eh......  They're brokers of course and don't actually have the boats in stock but Alan tells me they have a good name and are very helpful.  Some of those boats are wonderful inside.  I looked for Plover but it wasn't there, I wonder whether ut's been sold? P.  I can remember the dry dock.  What was the copy you were asking for?

The bit that Callunna is apparently "slobbering" over. And to Callunna, if you need help, then please ask.

Thomo - I simply clicked on the link (bowcrest) in Stanley's post. There's a whole pile of stuff to look at. The Pennine Cruisers replica short boat was in WW - will scan and post it on here when I'm able to prise the mag away from E.

So, as things stand now, we have a list:

We're looking for a secondhand widebeam (not dutch barge) shell, between 55 - 60 ft long, and between 10 - 12 ft wide. Decent engine and basic spec. Condition of fittings not too important. Price range depends on what work needs to be done, but our budget is £75k max for the finished project.

Anybody out there got one?

Thomo, will definitely take you up on your offer of help - many thanks!Go to Top of Page

Thanks Callunna and to you as well Ringo, the above boat is from the "manufacturer" on Merseyside. Pull the pic, blow it up and tell me what you see.

It struck me that British Waterways will be making cut-backs.  Have you asked them if they have any redundant work-boats for sale?  Could be a cheap way of getting a good strong hull.  Complete rebuild of course but they will be scrap price.

Thanks for A & A's contact details, S. Have emailed them.

Thanks also to Ringo for the pic of Oakly Doakly (where DO they get these names from!) I think I see what Thomo means. Is the boat sinking at the back (sorry, aft) end?

Here are a few more links to boats roughly within our price range and spec. However, some of them are originally built by that Merseyside company.

Hi Callunna, Have a look at Pickwell and Arnolds site page, also Silsden Boats deal with a lot of wide beams. "That Pic" clock the "Hole" just above the waterline also at that price its a lot of money for very little boat.

P&A very interesting. Have emailed them to see when we can go over there to have a look round.

Can't find any old barge shells anywhere for £3-5k, Inv, but here's something on Apollo Duck for under £20k. Looks totally derelict and we'd have to drag Thomo along to kick its tyres. It would be a big project and would probably give us nightmares while we did it up, but beggers can't be choosers.

Stanley, British Waterways, auction their redundant stock. They usually put them through their docks and do thorough checks and appraisals. When they do auction they sell at top dollar prices.

Had a lovely conversation with Peter Arnold today. What a nice bloke - very helpful and no hard sell. It was interesting to hear his views on certain manufacturers...

Sadly, there's no way (unless we win the lottery) we could afford the ideal standard of boat build. I suppose it's the difference between a £20k BMW and an £8k Nissan. Both do the job, but the former is better built, will probably last longer and be more reliable.

So we'll have to concentrate on looking for an older pre-owned boat that has the room and facilities we need. We aren't planning to do a lot of sailing, so as long as the thing doesn't leak or start to sink, and the equipment functions satisfactorily, we'll be happy.

Thanks Thomo. We really appreciate this.

Your efforts will not go unrewarded. I might even stretch to a half of Black Sheep if you find us a boat in the next 6 months Go to Top of Page
