Took dad out for surprise lunch last Wednesday to the Fanny Grey. He chose gammon, and I opted for finny haddock atop cheesy mash.

Wow, what wonderful portions! I didn't think dad would manage his; every time he worked his way through one piece, yet more gammon materialised, and very tasty he said it was too! he asked for both pineapple AND egg, the request met with a smile and "of course." Vegetables were served in a separate dish, and dad said they were good too, as were the plentiful chips (home made). Judging by the empty plate, he thoroughly enjoyed it.

My haddock was equally delicious - and again, plenty of it; very tender big chunks (as opposed to flakes), and not too salty, as can often happen with this fish, and just the right amount of cheese so as not to drown out the flavour of the fish.

Neither of us could manage a sweet, and thank goodness we didn't opt for starters!

Besides the menu, there was a large "specials" board, with choices ranging from traditional English fayre to more "exotic" choices.

It's the first time I've been there for almost 30 years, and I thoroughly recommend it - and what a view!

For us non locals. Is this the real name of the pub or a nickname,  and where is it?  Sounds pretty good.

Bon appetit!          Dave.

No, it's definitely the name of the pub; it used to be the Lane Ends (many years ago, and I prefer that name, but I think Fanny Grey must have something to do with a horse; there's certainly a grey mare on the pub sign). It's on the "top road" between Barlick and Barrowford - can't find a road number to give you, unfortunately

I used to walk up there with my grandparents from Salterforth - we would have a drink then walk back picking blackberries along the way - Perhaps this should be on the topic - Eating Out

Mum & dad used to take me picking blackberries down Salterforth Drag too! After the first couple of times being prickled, I lost interest fairly quickly

I always thought that the pub was called the Lane Ends and that Fanny Grey was a one time landlady so the pub was always referred to as "Fanny Greys". About 25 years ago someone then decided to change the name to that.
As a raw 14 year old got absolutely blind drunk there with Brain Shorrock and Alan Kelly one dinner time. We dropped the jackpot on the bandit  twice and spend all the money on fags and booze. Walked home to Earby and fell asleep in the front garden in the blazing sun. Kicked awake by dad who then threw cold water on me and sent me to bed!  Uttered those immortal words at the time  "Never again " and I didn't ever get drunk there again!!Nolic

Thanks all for the info. (Noticed he word Salterforth after I had posted).  Amazing that there are already two versions of where the name originated after only a few years.  No wonder Bernulf causes such difficulty.  Will send one of my agents to check it out.

Strange thing about pub name changes. Came back from Skipton to Colne on the  Skipton Old Road over Elslack moor and arriving at Black Lane Ends discovered that the Hare and Hounds is now the "Black Lane Ends" Nolic

I wonder which was the "original" name in that instance?

That's another place which had a good reputation for food a few years ago; has anybody tried it recently?

Funnily enough, dad said he'd always thought that Fanny Grey was the name of the landlady too.

We know it as "The Grey Fanny" (fnarr!)

Shame you couldn't manage a pud - their STP (Sticky Toffee Pudding) is delish!

Fanny Grey was the landlady at one time.  Here's an extract from a broadsheet of 1813:  'To let, for a term of ten years, a public house called Salterforth Lane Headon the road between Barrowford and Barnoldswick consisting of a house with brewhouse, Stable, shippon and a wheelwright's shop.  There was a cottage on the same side towards Barlick called Hatter's Rest.

Was the cottage in the field to the right of the Fanny Grey just across the lane that went up to Alan Brooks' farm.  I seem to remember some stonework in that field, as you will remember dad I spent alot of my youth at the Fanny Grey.......and don't get any ideas you lot that I was/am a drunkard.......my 2 best friends lived at the farm and the Fanny Grey.

It was known locally as The Black Lane Ends so I suppose the new owner thought it might as well be called that

Yes Margaret, you're right.  The well in the roadside there was the water supply for the cottage and what used to be Robinson's farm.

Thanks for that info, Stanley; I'll pass it on to my dad. I think he was being a bit "tongue in cheek" when he said he always thought it was the name of the landlady, so I'm sure he'll find it funny that he was actually right

Shame I missed out on the sticky toffee pud; it's my favourite! Maybe I should do without breakfast next time, to leave enough room for it
