I was given a slide of the old cottages at Amen Corner below the quarries at Salterforth, Never seen a pic of them before. Another piece in the jigsaw!

I've scanned the slide and it's up on the site. What impressed me was the fact that I switched my old Nikon Coolscan 2.5 on with the IBM upstairs this morning for the first time in years and it did just what it said on the tin, chugged slowly into life and did the business. It cost me £600 many years ago and I was told at the time that they went on forever, could be right. very slow of course but that doesn't matter when you are only dealing with odd images. Wonderful! Well done Mrs Nikon.

Reuters news this morning...
"Ratings agency Moody's slashed Spain's sovereign credit rating by a notch to Aa2 on Thursday and warned of further cuts, saying that the country's plans to clean up the battered banking sector will cost more than government expects and add to its debt burden. Moody's Investors Service also said it had ongoing worries about the Spanish government's ability to achieve structural improvement in its finances, especially against a backdrop of moderate economic growth in the near- to medium-term."
In London, the Footsie Index fell on the news immediately.

Looks like our Ponzi scheme aka National Insurance is starting to unravel. Increasingly more People taking out than paying in. Did no one in Goverment since the 60s realise that we are all living longer and something had to give ?? This has to be one of the biggest failures over Goverment in the last 50 years.

Frank, we must hope that the `consultants/advisors were aware of what was coming as it was obvious to most people as inflation and longevity became the norm but I suspect that succeeding governments have been sweeping it under the carpet.

I think the consultants/advisors are the root cause and also the main beneficiaries.

This got my attention Just reading a Will that I sent for, and it says. I leave my ten cottages as follows Four at Foulridge and Four at Kelbrook plus my two other Houses at Foulridge to my nephews. This was 1881 and the value of the Will was valued at under £500. My Grandad got £30 which I suppose was a lot of money in 1881 when your only 16 !!!

No 4 Calf Hall Road Barnoldswick sold for £140 in 1890s. By 1921 it was up for sale for £500. The firebeater who occupied it got 23/- a week in 1890, by 1921 he had £3-5-0 so his wage was keeping up with inflation in rent.
Libya is in full civil war and no matter what happens to Gadafii is changed forever. Brent crude spot price $115 and rising. Yemen, Tunisia and Ivroy Coast falling to bits. Even Saudi Arabia is getting worried. Quite a toxic brew.
Latest moves to curtail 'tobacco' sales. They mean cigarettes and I have no beef about attacking them, I decided they were coffin nails long ago. I wish they'd recognise that there is no research into pipe-smoking and leave us old farts alone!

The thing about Libya is that it is only a place of a few Towns with Benghazi and Tripoli the only major Cities. So I don't think a civil war would last long !!!

Last week I saw a police woman sitting in a van outside the Model Garage and thought it was unusual. Turns out that after a small fire was reported on the premises the fire brigade found a cannabis farm in the lower floors. Just goes to show how things can be going on under your nose and never attract your attention.

A `cannabis farm' was found recently on the edge of our village and in this case it was a real farm too - they were growing the plants camouflaged behind straw bales. As you say, you never really know what's going on nearby, even if like me you're nosy curious! One other bit of intelligence we enjoyed last week was the revelation that the vicar is moving to the house next door to my father and it will become the vicarage now. I told Dad and advised him to behave himself so he might get invited to the tea parties.

The Japan Meteorological Society has a web site giving warnings on the earthquake and the tsunamis. Thsi web page shows in bright red the length of Japan's coastline hit by waves higher than 3 metres: http://www.jma.go.jp/en/tsunami/index.html
Below is the latest message (at 11.20 GMT) sent to the Hawaii Civil Defense about the impending tsunami rushing 6000 miles across the Pacific from Japan...
BULLETIN TSUNAMI MESSAGE NUMBER 6 NWS PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER EWA BEACH HI 1231 AM HST FRI MAR 11 2011
TO - CIVIL DEFENSE IN THE STATE OF HAWAII SUBJECT - TSUNAMI WARNING SUPPLEMENT A TSUNAMI WARNING CONTINUES IN EFFECT FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII. AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS ORIGIN TIME - 0746 PM HST 10 MAR 2011 COORDINATES - 38.3 NORTH 142.4 EAST LOCATION - NEAR EAST COAST OF HONSHU JAPAN MAGNITUDE - 8.9 MOMENT
EVALUATION A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.
A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD. THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS 0307 AM HST FRI 11 MAR 2011.

How right Moh, I have just seen 48 pictures of the devastation including three of giant whirlpools at sea with ships caught up in them, oil refineries ablaze and aircraft and cars piled up like scrap. We here are fortunate and our troubles are as nothing to such an event.

I have just seen this news item on the internet .
The new Government in Egypt has asked the city's taxi drivers to drive around Cairo sounding their car horns. It is hoped that the familiar sounds of the city will induce a return to tranquillity and normality. Operation Toot 'n Calm 'Em will last for the rest of the month............
