I am researching the Broughton family of Thornton in Craven and have a lot of unanswered questions!

Thomas Broughton was born on 8 June 1800 to Richard Broughton and Margaret Slater and married Nancy Pickles on 8 February 1827.  They had 8 children - Christiana, Betty, Richard, William, Roger, Thomas Pickles, Henry and Margaret.  The line I am researching is from Richard who married Ellen Hartley in 1855 in Great Marsden, Lancashire.

I would like to find out more about Nancy Pickles and Ellen Hartley if possible.  Ellen's father was Robert Hartley but that is as much as I know.

Also, Roger Broughton was an inmate at Wormwood in the 1881 census.  How do I find out why he was there and for how long?

I would love to hear from anyone who may be able to help me out or point me in the right direction for further information!

Regards

Vikki in Canberra (where its still very hot at 9pm!!!!)

It looks obvious these are the Broughtons of Broughtons Mill on North Valley Road, Colne - which was pulled down to make way for Matalan and Aldi.  I knew John Berry and his wfe Jean who lived up Red Lane in Colne, he was connected to Broughtons but not sure how..  John has been dead a good few years now.  I think they had 2 sons.

In response to the last few emails on this chain, I am one of the two sons of John Broughton Berry referred to in moh's post of 14th January 2009.  He was the daughter of Jane Broughton (my grandmother) who was shown in the 1901 census as aged 15 and who subsequently married John Blackburn Berry.  My father died, aged 49, in 1974 but my mother, Jean Berry is remarried and continues to live in the area.

What moh refers to as Broughton's Mill was known to me as Stonebridge Manufacturing Co. Limited of which my father was a (minor) shareholder, director and employee until shortly before his death.

Welcome Roger - I met you when you were a little boy.  We used to have the grocer's shop in Parker Street, Colne where you mother used to shop.  Please give her my best wishes, I am sure she will remember myself and Fred.

Hi moh,

If that is the corner shop near Alkincoats Road, I remember it well.  I shoplifted some sweets when I was (very) young.  My mum found out and made me bring them back and apologise.  Never did it again!!

Roger
