As there seems to be quite a bit of artistic talent around here, I thought I would start a pencil sketch section .....

What is an electric erase. I have never heard of one. Tom how long did it take you to do this. Your work really does have a sense of Lowry about it.

Nice to see this topic back up, I did like the edna Lumb, and your pic Tom, I rather like the fluctuations in shade, so don't over work it. Like you sue I have never heard of an electric erase...come on Nolic, explain yourself?

Thanks Nolic,i used a normal eraser on the canal by doing little dashes,it seemed to give it a bit of movement and was quite affective, not that you can see it on this poor quality photograph..

Stanley, thank you, hung next to an Edna Lumb,it reminds me of that line from the matchstalk men song,"now Lowry's hang upon the wall beside the greatest of them all, even the Mona Lisa takes a bow"....

Sue it didnt take me long at all,i have a very short attention span, probably about 3hrs,its 11"x 15" and roughly copied from a photo 3"x2"...

Belle, the fluctuation in the shade was meant to make the picture appear slightly misty or foggy, but i think it makes it look a bit unfinished,i was thinking of just darkening the central area of it and fading it of into the distance....

They are nice and cheap Nolic, ive been slicing my rubbers to get sharp corners..
Stanley the same thing crossed my mind,hehe...

Ive modified it slightly ,detailed it a bit more and washed it over with water colour,it looked very dull and boring in real life, iam quite pleased with it now..

Tom, I have gone back and had a good look, what is interesting is that the darker area being on the outside, and the birds eye view, give it that rather eerie, atmospheric, "watched" feel.. i think you might loose that if you interfere too much with the centre of the picture. I also like the way you have picked out various chimney edges to emphasise them ,whilst leaving others lighter.
When in doubt leave it for a couple of months or so before having another good look, usually the problems will jump straight out at you.

It's a great p[ic Tom.  The really clever bit for me is the way you have handled the multiple perspectives in the various blocks of buildings.  Cracker.

I have never tried to draw buildings, I tend to be abit obsessed with landscapes and trying to draw flowers, which I find incredibly difficult

By gum, that Tom Phillips isn't just a pretty face is he? What talent! And all this time I've been thinking he's a hard-drinking steeplejack!

For Christ's sake don't stoke him up any more.  How do you think he stained the drawing?  More like spilt Guinness than water colour!

Sue ,I tried to draw a landscape a while back and failed totally,I think it was due to the lack of interest in what i was trying to draw, well actually it was paint,i was trying to do a watercolor with flowers and wildlife in it,it put me off for a while...

Tizer,I hope you dont think i was sober when i did this drawing do you, pretty face, you've been sniffing too much engine oil in Cornwall,hehe..Thank you..

Stanley ,you should know me better than that, you know if i'd have spilt my Guinness on the picture i'd have destroyed it sucking it back out,I think my Dad used to give me sodden beer mats to chew before i got teeth,hehe..

Oh dear, never mind, you may well have just spotted what needed doing..lets have a look at the new version. I find landscapes tricky, like flowers, it's so easy to get into cliches (don't know how to put an accent onit but you know what i mean..)
Oh Tom, i haven't been on SC for a long time but is that bloke from Aberdeen still about.... i miss his lingo!
I have just posted this then realised you have already put the new version up..mmm I was sad that the lovely deep shadow in the bottom right hand corner had gone..or was that just a shadow of you taking the photo?
