Helen was christened at Bracewell on 21/11/1813 and was a daughter of Stephen Broughton and Mary Thorp.  They married in Skipton on 26/11/1798.

Their other children were Ann 29/9/1799 whilst living at Barnoldswick, William 7/6/1801 living at Lane Ends, Richard 25/9/1803 living at Lane Ends, Mary 14/4/1811 living at Stock (close to Bracewell).  All these were christened at Gill, Barnoldswick and for the last 3 Stephen was described as a mason.  Mary was described as the 5th born, so there is one missing.  Presumably Helen was christened at Bracewell as they were still living at Stock.

Stephen was born 27/12/1774, son of Richard Broughton and Anne Oddie who were married at Gisburn 13/9/1763.  Their other children were Thomas 27/12/1763 (Oops), Mary 23/6/1765, Richard 17/5/1767, John 20/8/1769, William 7/7/1771, Ann 19/9/1773.  So Stephen was the 7th and last by which time they had run out of traditional Broughton names.  All of these were born whilst Richard and Ann were living in Barnoldswick and were christened at Gill church, Barnoldswick.  Richard was described as a Mason.

This, of course, is very exciting as John (17/5/1767) is probably the father of Dewhurst, my GtGtGrandfather.  So I think we are cousins.

Thanks cousin Nigel Smile, I think I'll have to start a separate thread for my descent from the Broughtons (might take a few days as I've got a lot going on)

I wonder if anyone can help me, as I've gone through this but I can't make the link to my line.  All I have is my grandad was Thomas Broughton, and he is in the Textile Project work mentioned as a clerk at one of the mills in town.

He cleared off well away whilst my dad was in the womb, so in 1938 or so, and was rarely seen again in Barlick.  I don't know his dad/mother or siblings (if any).  Nor when he was born.  I think my grandma, his wife, used to mention a Peel Broughton.  Thomas married Millicent Smith and they had Barbara and my dad, Neville

Any 'off the shelf' help really appreciated.  My name 'Richard Broughton' goes back a half millenia more or less in Barlick, and as all the family are still there, I'm back regularly walking in their footsteps.

Bruff,

Your best bet would be to get a copy of the marriage certificate between Thomas Broughton and Millicent Smith.  This would give his father's name, occupation and living status.  We could work backwards from there.

I can't look up the reference for you for another 2 weeks - maybe someone else with Ancestry access can help.

Hello Richard

Peel is an interesting name and not very common in the Broughton family.

I have 2 in my records.  Peel Broughton is on the 1891 census aged 15, working as a weaver and living at home with his parents John and Isabella Broughton.  He was their eldest son and his siblings were Ann, Richard and Stephen.

The other one I have appears on the 1881 census when he was 27, married to Jane and with children, Francis, Robert and Ann.  He also appears on the 1871 census, aged 17, son of Stephen; and Stephen appears on the 1851 census aged 26.

Let me know what you find out about Thomas' marriage to Millicent

I'm new here and just posted my first couple of messages on here.

I too am researching Broughton Ancestors. My Mum and Uncle were both born broughton at Alice Street in Barnoldswick.

My Grandparets are Mona b1919 and Maurice Broughton b1915

Maurices parents were Robert Broughton and Elizabeth Broughton (was Baldwin).

I haven't got any further that that yet with the Broughtons but know that Elizabeth Baldwin was the Daughter of Thomas Baldwin and Grace Baldwin (was Robinson).

I can't find a Robert Broughton on this thread that might be a match though, can anyone help? Go to Top of Page
