HI Everyone I thought I would join this forum just in case there was anything more I could learn on my Briercliffe family. Firstly I have my John Briercliffe who married Hannah Belfield in Rochdale, Hannah was actually from there in Smallbridge but I'm not sure of John origins as yet he was living in Cheetham st. in Rochdale at the time of his marriage, there was also a Sarah Briercliffe living in Cheetham st. as well she married John Whitehead.
John and Hannah had 4 children between 1826 and 1833 they being Mary from whom I'm descended and her brother James, Betty (Elizabeth) and Charlotte born in 1833, all baptised at St. Chad but under the spelling of BRITCLIFFE.
It seems that something has happened to John around this time as the family seem to split up, James is living with the Turner family on the 1841 Census as a coalminer living in Smallbridge Rochdale, Charlotte disappears no records of her have been found. Hannah was living with Elizabeth? in Deansgate Manchester on 1841 Census and Hannah is again living with her daughter Elizabeth who by then was married to William Lowe on the 1851 Census. Elizabeth was still alive in 1881 and is with her daughter Hannah.
James married Alice Cottam in Manchester in 1852 they had 7 surviving children and eventually moved back to Rochdale where James died in 1897 and Alice died in 1895. The spelling of their surname varies on the different records from Bricliffe, Britcliffe and Briercliffe /Briarcliffe. I still can't find out what happened to John and Charlotte, My ancestor Mary was living on the streets of Manchester from a very early age and was eventually sent to Tasmania as a convict. Anyway I'm trying to piece together where John B' comes from and what happened to him. Any help much appreciated kind regards Dianna

Welcome to the site Dianna (two 'n's?) I'm sure the sleauths will pick this up and direct you. Have you tried doing a search in Google for a name and putting oneguyinbarlick after it? This makes the search site-specific and will take you direct to the page where the term appears.

Quite a lot of Briercliffes were baptised between 1794 & 1811 at St. Peters, Bolton-le-Moor (Bolton was known as Bolton-le-Moor up to 19th century. St. Peters is actually Bolton). The only John was born 1811 which is too late, but as these baptisms are on the IGI Batch numbers there could be others born in the same area who no-one has put on there.

I see you have been in contact with her on the Briercliffe site Gloria. she used a different name. I suppose you have the following:- From the Tasmanian Archives - Mary Britcliffe left Portsmouth on 10 Feb 1846 on the Emma Eugenia arriving Tasmania on 5 Jun 1846. (4 months at sea!!!) Convicted Manchester Borough Quarter Sessions for a term of 10 years on 4 Sep 1845. Wonder what she did?

Good morning everyone thank you all so much for your replies and help very much appreciated. Firstly Mary Britcliffe stole some money from a guy in Manchester (Thomas Scholes) when she was 19 that's how she ended up here, she had been in and out of gaol many times from a very early age. The birth found for her mother Hannah is correct thanks for that and as I'm not positive when john was born I don't know what his age was at death. There was one christened in Manchester in 1802/03 to James Briercliffe and Hannah Speakman I think but I'm not sure. I've just joined the Burwains ring and have placed an enquiry there and have checked out the Briercliffe society and everywhere else I can think of. I just don't want to miss anything because a book is being written in Tasmania on some of the female convicts that were imprisoned there and My Mary is to be included which I'm providing information for. I'm trying to find out what happended to her dad as this may explain why her circumstances were so bad and her families as well. Anyway everyone I appreciate your input very much and I will keep on searching. Many thanks kind regards Dianna

Interesting bit of research Di and what the site is all about. The more info you post the more response you'll get.

All female convicts---I would have thought that very unusual.
