One of the wonderful things about our country is the diversity of place names, some of which, the origins are quite vague. Barnoldswick is where most of us are,, twelve letters, none repeated, it was at one time registered as the longest place name as such. Stixwold, Tumby Woodside, Piddletrenthide, Affpuddle, the list is endless. One of my favourites is "Nemphnet Thrubwell sounds like a hangover" and before I snuff it , I want to have a look. But "Wooton Basset", we surely have all heard of. A beautiful English town which has been transformed into a place of honouring  the sadness of conflict. Few weeks go by without the sight of  its people paying their respects to the young men and women of this country passing through, now joined by members of the families of the fallen. The sight of the Globemaster Aircraft arirving at RAF Lyneham and discharging their solemn cargoes, the slow and dignified progress through this lovely place. I like a "Wet" and I am going to make sure that I have one in the "Cross Keys" in Wooton Basset, and thank the landlady and all present for what they have done and continue to do. They have been given an award in the past week and they deserve it. So my good wishes this Christmas go to the people of "Wooton Basset". Bless you all, have a good Christmas and may your welcome duties soon be discharged.

At best, the legality of some recent conflicts is dubious Really ??
Lets wait for Chilcott on Iraq, Afghanistan is not dubious.
The tossing out of Saddam from Kuwait was not dubious was it ??

Richard  I don't agree with many of your posts. but I do find them interesting and well thought out.  This time I think you are missing the point by a mile or two...the Tribute paid is not to the "dubious events" of the past, simply to the lads who gave their lives for "events" that even they might have found "dubious".

cheers

The key words are 'some' and 'dubious'.  Rather than dubious, perhaps I should have said 'contentious'.  All I was noting, was the unease some townspeople felt about the whole thing.  Unease they have felt for some time, because as has been reported, the proposal to rename the town and the street through it, has been mooted many times and the townsfolk have wanted nothing to do with it.  Frank - it's interesting that in your praise of this, you don't mention the good people of Wooton Basset at all (save for a passing mention of the council, almost as an afterthought).  Rather it is the British Legion and associated military units, who it appears you credit with making the show of respect what it is.

Richard I do believe that a lot of the people who stand at WB are indeed ex service people belonging to the various Associations, and they travel to the town.
The good people of WB would be at work when the cortege passed the memorial.
I think the issue here is should we recognise that this town became the focal point for returning dead service men, who died protecting our country. I have no politics in this at all but  I do know a lot of families found comfort from the fact people also shared their grief during the repatriation, and recognised the sacrifice made by their loved ones.

I second all of that Frank, and I do not believe that this is something that needs to be chewed over like a bit of tough beef. Of course many of those who turn out are ex-servicemen and women, thats how we are and hopefully always will be. I have a letter from the Mayor of Wootton Bassett which outlines how these events are managed and details the imput of the local community. They have done us proud, without seeking any reward and they deserve to be recognised for it. Thank you all at Royal Wootton Bassett!!!

I watched the very well made hour long programme about Wootton Bassett on the beeb last night and it was profoundly moving. I have never had any doubts about the role the little town plays, and the programme opened the door on the lives of some of those who take part. These good people do not participate for any kind of reward or glory, they do it because they believe it is right, it was also clear that it is appreciated by those whos family member is the subject of a repatriation. There is no need to go on any further about the efforts of the townspeople or those who travel to be there, just "Well done" and thank you.

I have just seen a Telegraph video of the PMs visit to Wootton Bassett and Brize Norton, this was to mark the end of an era for one small town and the beginning of a new chapter for another RAF Base and its nearby town of Carterton. Three Hundred and Forty Five of our Armed Forces Personnel have started on their final journey home through Wootton Bassett, the first repatriation through Brize Norton is scheduled for Tuesday next week, a 40 year old Royal Marine of 42 Commando, a Married Man and Father. Whatever your views upon missions carried out by our Armed Forces. one fact is clear, these Men and Women have died whilst trying to make a difference for people who do not have the comfort of living in a stable and relatively safe environment as we do. This is of course a very noble statement, they have died in the course of duty, this we know, it could also be said that they died in the name of Allah!. Before anyone mounts their ethical soapbox and at the risk of joining Frank and Herb consider this, if the nearest town to RAF Lyneham had been like Nelson Lancs, what took place in Wootton Bassett would never have happened.

Thank you good people of Wootton, and good luck to those at Brize Norton, you have a hard act to follow.

Thomo,  you mount your unethical soapbox and bring your prejudices into what should be a post  limited to recognising the sacrifices that have been made and the show of recognition that Wootton Bassett gave to those repatriated.

As far as I'm concerned  I have seen enough of your barely disguised racism on the site.

"What a surprise"!!! I am sure it will give my Asian friends a laugh, and yes I do have Asian friends and none of them would want to live in Nelson, and they have told me why. But unlike yourself they probably have a different view of what racism is and can see it from all aspects.
Goodbye to all the friends I have made on this site and good luck to you all.
Over and out!

But wait a moment, what about my other friends, the Poles, the Russians. the Lithuanians, the Rumanians, the Asian Indians, so I am a racist am I. I work with part of the Asian community in my area in a bid to control what they see as racism, not from my people but from their own. There has been a problem here that both they and I can see, between us we have got it "sorted". Now Nolic etc you can do with me whatever you see fit, but I am a Barlicker, that you cannot change!

That may be so, yet I assume that it will soon rattle its way up the chain of command. If you look back at my posts I believe that you will find that I have never attached labels to any of the members, and nor would I, yet you are so near to calling me a racist. We all have our own views on all manner of subjects, object by all means, but at the same time remember that some of us have a different take on certain subjects based not upon what we read or are told, but what we have experienced. When did you last sit down with a group of Asian kids and try to explain that what they were doing was dangerous and could result in tradgedy, or talk to the young mum from the same community who had ambitions that she can never fulfil, or her Grandmother who can see the problems and does not know what to do, She does not see me as you do. but I know where she comes from, and Iv'e been there, we understand each other, and of that I am proud.

Thomo, I've expressed my views on the matter. It is up to other members to weigh up your comments and make their own judgements. Nolic

Thomo's statement about Nelson may or may not be true, I'm not in  a position to know, but I don't object to him giving his opinion on a town. The forum is public and anyone from Nelson who wishes to disagree with Thomo can do so. I'm not sure why Thomo's comment should be seen as racist. Isn't it simply a comment on the population of Nelson, whatever their race might be? It gets difficult to say anything about an issue these days if there is any chance of it being seen as touching on race.

It will always be that there are those amongst us who can see beyond what is popular, and are not afraid to say something that angers some. Tizer, I wiil be re-opening the aviation topic shortly, loved the 360 degree vid of the A380 flightdeck, my new next door neighbour works for the last local firm that I want to examine, Euravia at Kelbrook. and thank you for your balanced comment.

What is RACISM, other than an un-natural idea fabricated, and thrust upon us, by the powerseeking, liberal left wing, equality mad, society misfits, who would have us all indulge in their peculiar and un-natural activites.

Why are we, well them, spending millions of pounds that we do not have on a billion pound four yearly Racism Fest. It is no good saying it is not racism, because it is just as racist as test matches and world cups etc.

It is what goes on in the mind that is real nor what is said.
