Came up in conversation today about whether it should be spelled Barlick or Barlic.

Someone mentioned the food shop Barlic Bites and said wasn't it strange how they got away with spelling it wrong.

However, I have a press cutting from the Craven Herald of 1914 which spells the town's nickname without a K and many locals also spell it that way.

It's always been with a K for me, but if this turned out to be the modern spelling then I'd be happy to accept a non-K version.

Does anyone have any strong evidence for either way?

Its a local, colloquial shortening of the full name so does it matter? Having 2 ways of spelling it adds to the richness of the name.Nolic

Shouldn't that be the rikness of the name?

Always spelt it as Barlick. The folks that come from the town are called Barlickers !

A "K" for me too.
I always think that the particular sign looks odd. When I see it from the Town Square my mind says the "K" fell off.

In the CHSC minutes it was occasionally spelt without the 'K'. Does it matter?

Thanks Calluna for starting a new discussion ..which is of interest to most of the residents of Barlick I would say..a discussion that almost anyone on here can proffer an opinion in...what a breath of fresh air to not have to be an engineer or a politician to be able to join in!

Thanks Belle - it's encouraging to get positive feedback.

I don't think the blokes realise it, bless their little cotton socks, but over the years many of their responses to my posts have had either a negative or a dismissive tone to it. (I'm sure they'll vehemently disagree and I don't include ALL the blokes in this heinous accusation!) You might accuse me of being paranoid but after 7 years it gets a little wearing.

Take this post, for example. It's probably quite an innocuous example and taken on its own it doesn't amount to much, but several of the blokes have asked "Does it matter?"

No, of course it doesn't matter - the same way that no other issues raised on this forum actually matter in the great scheme of things.

I just thought it was an interesting observation and wanted to find out whether there were any examples of it from an earlier period, or whether it was merely a typo in the Craven Herald.

But it doesn't matter, apparently.

I'm aware that typed out, this  post could be taken as inflammatory or insulting or simply not very nice ... I honestly don't intend it to be. I'm just expressing my feelings about a long-term situation that often makes me reluctant to post on the forum, which is a shame.

I'm going to put the cat among the pigeons and re-join OG under an assumed male name and see whether there's any difference in attitude towards my posts. A valuable social experiment, I reckon WinkGo to Top of Page

Cally I don't belive that my post would have been any different no matter who had posted it.

I think its an interesting debate but it can only go so far as the subject matter is a little limited. Nolic

an interesting debate but it can only go so far as the subject matter is a little limited.
But you see, that's what I mean.

You've dismissed it because it's of little interest to you personally. I'm not suggesting you SHOULD have an interest, of course. It's your choice whether to contribute or not. I don't have a problem with that at all.

But what I was asking for were specific examples of useage that other people may have come across, for something which I'm interested in, and therefore it DOES matter ... to me. Even though I'm only a girl...  Devillolol

Back to the topic:

Whether you feel it matters or not in the Grand Scheme of the Universe, if you have any hard evidence (as opposed to opinion) relating to the spelling of Barlic(k) - from newspapers, from genealogy research, from wherever, and if it's not too much trouble (because this isn't for any major project) so only if you can easily lay your hands on it, I would be interested to see it.

And Tardis - knowing Barlickers, you could well be right! Go to Top of Page

I will watch with interest to see how wide a debate this encourages. Nolic
