50 years ago the buzz word in industry was 'automation'. When questions were asked about the effect on jobs the answer was that there would be less overtime and more holidays. Of course it worked out that all the 'overtime reduction and holidays' dropped on one sector and they call it unemployment. At the time the chairman of GM made a famous comment about the use of 'robots'. He said the problem was that they didn't buy cars.

Whatever the reasons you attribute unemployment to, the fact is that there are too few jobs. As my mate Newton said once, "There aren't enough people making things". I never had it easy but I could always find a job. This isn't happening these days.

It all went wrong when it required two earners to provide a living, i'm old enough to have lived when a married woman was a wife , mother, and cook, and to do that properly required more than  a 40 hour week, so there was no time for work unless it was home based. I know the females will be up in arms, but family life begins at home

Looks like we have to many people !!!!. Sounds awful but without things like the Spanish Flu taking it's toll on the population, we have just grown & grown made easier by the State supplying cash for babies

A brief report in The Times says how a council in Hertfordshire is taking a farmer to task because his cocks crow at night and upset a neighbour. The farmer has been there for ages, doing the same thing, whereas the neighbour is new. The council say the farmer should move his noisy beasts at night so they don't disturb the neighbour.

How have things been turned upside down like this? The person buying the house should check that the locality suits them - buyer beware! The Times relates another similar incident on the same page.

Quite common, a complaint about one cockerel was resolved by the owner wringing its neck. The complainant then sent for the police on the grounds of animal cruelty, said the cockerel should have been cared for by a rescue organisation. I agree with you Tiz, don't move into the country and then try to redesign it to suit yourself. These people just don't understand real life.

Frank Sytner, the owner of the UK BMW franchise and saloon car racing team, moved to a house in the country by a farm then took the farmer to court because it was noisy and the cows left dung on the lane leading to his house. His wife told the court that the cows kept mooing, and the judge said "Mrs Sytner, that is what cows do". Nuff said.

With all the news about the Afghan elections I begin to wonder what happens next if we successfully chuck out the Taleban and bring peace to the country. It might solve the Taleban problem but won't Al Queda just move to another location and give us trouble from there...and then another and so on? The world is a big place and has lots of unstable regions were such people can hide.

I can't see us being on anything but a hiding to nothing. I see the Afghan government has appealed for no reporting of violence tomorrow. Fat chance!

I'm glad that the Scots allowed Al Megrahi to go home. Only thing that bothers me is that I get the feeling it's a stitch-up to avoid further investigation. I get the feeling that both US and UK governments want to bury the matter. Time will tell. Did any of you read Paul Foot's devastating piece on the affair? It's still available on the PE website but I think you have to pay for the download. I wonder what Jim Swire will do now? As for the intemperate language from certain people in the States, it makes me sad that apart from anything else, revenge is such a powerful emotion.

Stanley I think there are to many people involved for it to be a stich up !!!
Sat on the sidelines I don't really know how I would feel if one of my own had been on that flight.. Three independant Judges found him guilty with enough " evidence " for a life sentenance.
Does it matter if you die at home or in a prison cell, or if you drop dead in the street.
( so I don't swallow all this compassion nonsense) just hope this has all been thought through very very carefully. I think the Americans do have a right to voice concern, it was their Plane and a lot of their citizens.

I don't agree with any of that Frank but we are all entitled to an opinion. It may be that time will tell, I shall wait and see.

Did you read Paul Foot's devastating book on James Hanratty?  Didn't hear much more about it after DNA testing was done. I agree with you about Megrahi though. It suits everyone (except the USA) to close the matter down.

Is there a word which means 'doing something for one reason whilst pretending it has been done for another'  ?  Whatever it is, I think all politicians have a Masters degree in it.

Tripps, is the word `mandelsonism'?

Frank, I would have liked there to have been more consideration of the concerns in some quarters that information was ignored in the Magrahi  trial. Whe the Crown office was asked about it they just said the information was judged not to be relevant (e.g. the break-in at Heathrow on the day of the flight). There doesn't seem to have been any attempt to properly check about these things.

Agree or Don't
At the end of the day it was 3 Independant Judges who found him guilty, and believe me they have seen and heard more Evidence than you or Me. Or  a Private Eye Journalist !!!!!!!!
Don't agree with any of that Frank

what the 3 independant Judges ??

Sorry but I can't let that pass. Describing Paul Foot as 'A Private Eye journalist' in a perjorative way does a grave disservice to a man who was absolutely honest and perhaps the best investigative reporter of the last twenty years.

The point you conveniently refuse to address Frank is that the judges at the trial were not given the full evidence. Read Paul Foot, The UN observer and men like Jim Swire. Of course, they could all be wrong and you are right. I myself have grave doubts, timewill tell, the truth has an unfortunate habit of finding a way out in the end.

Stanley I can not believe 3 Judges did not arrive at the correct verdict. Our Judges Do Not Convict people on only so much evidence, they had sufficient evidence to make a Guilty judgement like it or not. The rest is just academic.
