Questions about this subject keep cropping up amid closely related topics, so I thought it may be a good idea to expand on the subject. I will not go on about my qualifications to discuss Canal Boats so lets just give it a go and see what transpires.

That's great to hear, Colin. As an aside, it may interest readers that I know Colin from umpteen years back when he was a friend of my sister. I'll always remember him for introducing me to one of the first Glastonbury LPs - a triple vinyl set enclosed in a triangular sleeve, with live performances from David Bowie and Marc Bolan before they became famous. Absolute magic. If only I could get my hands on a copy now. Hadn't heard or seen Colin in years, then he tips up on OGFB! Who needs Friends Reunited when you've got OGFB!

hello
I just fell into this forum from google - I very recently decided that I am going to sell off everything and live on a boat instead. It's a lengthy project - I won't be selling the house for another 2 years - but at least that gives me time to learn the best way to do this.
Right, I'm going to go back and re-read this whole thread again, but thought I'd just say hello first!
A quick (big!) question is - what sort of budget do you need to get a hull and do it up? I don't want the ritz on water or anything - but a solid boat and engine with the basic ammenities on board. Could you give me an idea? Or am I being a bit vague, I can see this being a "how long is a piece of string" type question but what the hey - I'll throw it out there anyway!
:)
Edited:
Right - I've just read over the whole thread and have to say thanks Thomo for such descriptive posts about the boats. I've just learnt more in ten minutes than the last few weeks off googling
One thing that's struck me - the mooring situation. Assuming that I don't buy a boat that comes with mooring (as I would prefer to get a hull and refit) how do you go about getting a mooring? If there are less moorings that boats then I'm assuming there's waiting lists or something? Do you put your name down before you even have a boat? (seems bad practise??), or do you go ahead with the boat plans and then hop from place to place "on the run" while you find a mooring?

Hi Mutters!SNAP! It seems like you're in exactly the same position as us. It's chicken & eggs as regards selling the house/buying a boat, but yes, you're right about the waiting lists. Two years isn't out of the ordinary (the private mooring at Salterforth had a 7-year waiting list and they've closed the book on it now). We've got our name down at 3 but are hoping that one of them will come up sooner rather than later, fingers crossed. Thomo has been a mine of info and I'm glad I didn't have the money to go right out there and buy a boat immediately as I would have made some huge mistakes. Keep coming back and I'm sure you'll glean lots of useful ideas and info. But Thomo - remember I asked first about any boats going! I'll even raise the reward to half a case of Liebfraumilch (yuk)! |

STILL GOT THE GLASTONBURY LP????!!!!!STILL GOT THE GLASTONBURY LP????!!!!! I would walk over hot coals to hear it again. Any chance I could beg, cajole, plead or bribe you to copy it? (For archiving purposes, of course...) I've looked all over the place for it - eBay, car boots etc. Yes, I remember Bowie and Lou Reed - there was me, Clare and Crass crammed into the back of your minivan. I still see Clare as she lives nearby, and Crass did visit OGFB once or twice but I haven't been in touch for a while. Happy days, eh?

H! Go and change your knickers after that last post...... Isn't timternetwebthingy wonderful. Welcome to the newcomers, don't be shy but remember there is a public health warning ..... OGFB is as addictive as nicotine, someone will try to ban us one of these days. How about changing the topic name to Canal Boat Corner? I'm serious, it means that Google will pick it up again and it could get to be another SC. Let me know......

Fine by me. There's lots of scope for a place where info and experiences could be exchanged, and of course it's also very relevant to the website* as one could argue there wouldn't be the Barlick as we know it if it weren't for the L&L canal.
* As is Steeplejacks Corner/the role of chimneys in the cotton industry, I hasten to add...) In the meantime, here are a few pics of the canal near Barlick & Salterforth:

I have liveaboard friends (who also refit canal boats) that I'm visiting this weekend down in Londinium so hopefully I can have a good old natter with them about the ins and outs and whatnot
Does anyone know any good books about boats etc? - along the lines of what Thomo has been posting here

I bought a book on how to design and fit interiors - it contains some very handy ideas and suggestions. It's called The Waterways World Guide to Narrowboat Planning by Graham Booth. (ISBN: 1 870002 94 6)He's also written other books on building and fitting out boats, but I haven't read them yet. We get the monthly mag Waterways World which has lots of useful info on all aspects of canalboating. There are other mags too, but we realised we'd spend a fortune if we bought them all! As I'm sure you've already discovered, there are a gazillion websites on the subject. If you find a particularly good one, please let me know. |

I have noticed today that there are a lot of dead fish between Salterforth and Foulridge. I have reported it to the relative people but have yet to get a reply.

Any news on the dead fish, Ringo? That's quite alarming.I found an interesting boat, advertised on a broker's website but also on eBay. I'll PM Thomo to see what he thinks as it's slightly unusual.
